Just a few concerns about this whole GW thing. Caveat: I do not condone behaviour that is illegal.

  1. It does kind of look like a whole bunch of privileged TV luvvies are clamouring to denounce someone with really quite humble roots. I grew up in London and am constantly paranoid about how I come across to my mainly middle class colleagues. The thing is, middle class and privileged people operate by a set of unwritten rules. It’s like a full time job in itself trying to emulate their way of interacting, lest you be called out for not being ‘nice’ enough or doing something odd to them, like forgetting to start an email with ‘Hope you are well?’. Only, they won’t let you know to your face that you’ve accidentally been too sharp or direct, or maybe that your joke wasn’t woke enough - no, that stuff just goes straight to HR.
  2. The equality act 2010 makes it the employer’s responsibility to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Why wasn’t all this lewd stuff dealt with? GW said that no one had made a formal complaint. Again, it makes me wonder whether the middle class luvvies just didn’t want to call things out at the time because it’s ‘beneath’ them to even consider doing something about it.
  3. Even though he’s apologised, the public doesn’t think that’s good enough. It’s like only perfect people get to keep their careers. Woe betide you if you said something crass on twitter 10 years ago, or got caught speeding or something.

Of course, lots of you would want to shout me down over this, but you know what? We’re all mums here and many of us have sons. Boys and young men do and say crass things. GW hasn’t raped or systematically abused anyone. It doesn’t make what’s happened right, but I also don’t think it’s right that swarms of pitch-fork waving strangers get to play judge, jury and executioner. I’m a big fan of forgiveness. Am I the only one?

Ugh. Woman interviewed on the BBC news last night said she worked on one of the shows and was asked to adjust GW's bow tie. She looked down and saw his trousers were down and she could see his pubic hair and the top of his penis. Would you find that behaviour acceptable, OP?

Disgusting. There’s so much more to come out about him. It’s not peaked yet. What a horrible human he is.

Why does food make you get your cock out?

🤣🤣🤣 I meant it’s unhygienic

Middlemarch123 · 04/12/2024 14:56

JT has released a statement, basically saying he can’t say anything due to investigation. In Telegraph and on Instagram.

JT…? Who is that?

MurdoMunro · 04/12/2024 15:09

As I said before, when someone at your workplace is under investigation related to their employment you are instructed (and it is also very good advice) to keep your gob firmly shut. I am entirely neutral at this point about John Torode.

mbosnz · 04/12/2024 15:15

I'm wondering how many more misogynistic sex pests have to get their come uppance before the others get the idea that if you behave like this, next time it could be you? And just because you and your apologists/ like minded arseholes think it's perfectly acceptable, all in good humour, 'just bantz' fun, not everybody will think that way, and one day one of your targets just might fight back?

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 04/12/2024 15:56

Oh jolly good, a fairly dismissive statement saying pretty much what a busy little bee he has been for nearly a full week hence why he didn't have time to speak before.

I know he probably can't say anything due to inquiries but a line along the lines of "some of the stories reported are very upsetting to hear and my sympathy goes out to the people involved" wouldn't have hurt. As it is he comes over somewhat dismissive about it being a shame people didn't have a brilliant time.

Bet his agents pleased he included the bit about staying with the program though!

Smallsalt · 04/12/2024 16:08

He isn't

amyds2104 · 04/12/2024 16:18

I completely agree with you OP. Think it’s blown out of proportion massively. Especially when people keep coming to make claims when they’ve had plenty of opportunity before like Melanie Sykes etc.

friendlycat · 04/12/2024 16:19

Gregg Wallace is obviously toast here. There's no way back from this.

But this story has wider issues surrounding the production company, co presenters, plus the BBC.

As we are seeing more and more detail is coming out of the woodwork.

At the moment I cannot see MasterChef surviving as if it is, as it will need to be off air for quite a period of time, the investigation will need to have completed, an absolute overhaul executed etc etc.

It's going to be difficult for JT as the co presenter.

If it is to be reformatted I cannot see JT surviving the cull as people will always associate him and GW having delivered the previous format and he will be tainted by association.

I should imagine this story has a way to run yet.

HarrietBond · 04/12/2024 16:20

Melanie Sykes said it in her book, a year ago. The Mail found the reference and repeated it. She didn’t say anything now herself She also made a complaint about him at the time. This is all set out on this thread.

GW said no one made a formal complaint?

They have on more than one occasion - once on Masterchef and he was made to apologise, the other while working on Inside the Factory where he lost his job because of it.

Both of these were reported in the media at the time (Google is your friend) but you believed him when he said no one made a formal complaint. Perhaps he was talking about ‘this time’.

Not being ok with having your bum touched or a pervert pushing his groin in to you is ‘blowing things out of proportion’?
Fucking weird, your low standards aren’t relevant tbh.
Plenty of women did complain at the time - no one did anything about it. Numpty.

Jeez that’s a low bar you’ve set there for men and boys- as long as they haven’t raped anyone or systematically abused people. Can you hear yourself? So other abuses are fine as long as they aren’t ’systematic’?

As a society we should have moved on from tolerating toxic masculinity and that ‘boys will be boys’ sort of attitude.

Look, I’m all for forgiveness but that’s down to the individuals making the accusations and from what I can see he hasn’t made any genuine apologies or asked for forgiveness from the individuals themselves. A public ‘apology’ that doesn’t really accept responsibility but is more of a PR exercise doesn’t really cut it.

Justus6 · 04/12/2024 16:38

Victim blaming is just as bad as the deed IMO

Spirallingdownwards · 04/12/2024 16:38

No you are not the only one - that well knkw n rapist Donald Trump also believes ot is acceptable to sexually harass women.

Emmz1510 · 04/12/2024 16:39

Oh and anyone who knows anything real about this sort of thing understands that the reasons why women don’t speak up are varied and complex. Embarrassment, fear they won’t be taken seriously, internalised worries that they might be overreacting, shock….i can go on….

CosyLemur · 04/12/2024 16:49

I bloody love MC - that twat better not mess with the programme. The production company will be fked tho and tons of people if MC goes down a for a bit, will loose income, employment cos of this master twt !

Yes.

I have found one definite reference to a formal complaint and many many more that seem to have been made to either the production company or the BBC but I don't know if they are classed as formal.

The thing with formal complaints is that often the person subject to them doesn't initially know about them.

Either way, what he said is provable bollocks. (Sic. He likes rude words so let's throw them at him)
