To ask you all to acknowledge this rise in non-stun slaughter?

I've read numerous conversations on here where there seems to be a rejection of the fact that this even happens in the UK, let alone on a scale like this.

These animals need a voice! 30 million+ of them this year alone. This is not ok.

Reject Halal. Reject Kosher.

There are lots of people who care deeply about all forms of animal cruelty, of which this is one, not necessarily the worst.

Then there also seem to be lots of people who are suspiciously only concerned with one type of animal cruelty, one which offers a way to reject and stigmatise Jewish and Muslim people.

Which one are you OP?

kinkytoes · 03/12/2024 15:41

I'm opposed to ALL animal cruelty. What a strange reaction to my post.

If it's animal welfare you're worried about, I'm pretty sure 100% of the animals would rather not be slaughtered at all

Occasionalnamechanger · 03/12/2024 15:45

Which other non Christian religious practices do you want to ban, OP?

WinterCrow · 03/12/2024 15:48

'Stun gun' slaughter is also cruel IMO because abattoir standards in many locations are crap.

On-site farm-killed meat is available, but obviously expensive.

All cheap meat comes with a cost - to animals. And sometimes to human health. It's an important discussion to have.

Oppression of women would be another.

Quite.

But some battles are harder to win than others.

No it doesn't mean they are not worth fighting.

But the number of people who deny this even happens makes me sick.

Surely it would be best to campaign for less slaughter full stop?

DuckityDuck · 03/12/2024 16:09

YANBU OP, although I do agree with those saying that there are plenty of ways in which the meat industry mistreats animals 😞

I insisted my DC was "vegetarian" at nursery because the meat served there was both Halal and cheap crap. I've lost the argument now she's at primary school unfortunately so she eats it there.

At home I insist that all meat is free range (not that that is a cast iron guarantee that it's ethical, sadly).

RobertaFirmino · 03/12/2024 16:11

Isn't ALL meat cruel though? I ask this as a carnivore. Something that seems more merciful than the alternative isn't automatically 'not cruel'.

As I said above, some battles are harder to win than others.

Which is presumably why the RSPCA are taking this line too.

I'm not the OP (or Christian), but I'd ban circumcision. I think it's barbaric.

SpeculativeHoumous · 03/12/2024 16:49

I think if you're going to kill an animal to eat it it doesn't really matter how you do it really as long as its an approved method. It's probably best to not eat them full stop as none of the methods are particularly lovely.

In which case you oppose all types of slaughter surely?

Serencwtch · 03/12/2024 17:09

I have livestock & have worked in abbatoirs.

I see 100's of animals born each year. I see them when they are sick & suffering & in pain and I've seen them at slaughter including halal.

I know how to recognize when an animal is suffering, frightened or in pain.

Nothing in halal (non stun) slaughter is any worse than any other slaughter if done correctly.

There are far, far bigger concerns in animal welfare tbh.

Newsenmum · 03/12/2024 17:10

Is this really any worse than stun slaughtering? At least there is religious belief behind it.

Basically this.

Annabella92 · 03/12/2024 17:11

I don't think people generally care really about animal welfare. It's so easy not to.

username299 · 03/12/2024 17:13

Go vegetarian and campaign to end treating all animals cruely.

Well I'm both vegan and a passionate atheist - is that ok with you?

Anonycat · 03/12/2024 17:17

How do you feel about eating fish? Do you worry about how they are killed?

Nolegusta · 03/12/2024 17:21

I've been called racist and islamaphobic for refusing to eat halal meat. I'm neither. I wouldn't eat kosher meat either.
TBH I eat very little meat these days, though cook it for my family, hopefully it'll soon be none if I can manage to feel healthy enough without it.

Agree.
There's rarely a genuine medical need for it.
