Strangers in your block of flats asking you to lend them money ‘til their dole money comes through then stropping off offended when refused

being bitten by Rottweiler outside flats

heroin addict dead in flats - body lay undiscovered for 2 weeks - admittedly happened, but admittedly NOT during time I lived here

kids graffitiing stairwells with pens

my windscreen wipers snapped off in flat car park

woman I suspect is prostitute due to comings and goings - but not 100% sure and u may have got it wrong

loud arguments between neighbours about noise

a few serious ex offenders housed

  • however - it’s otherwise alright ! 👍😀

OP is a lack of proper food making you feel strange? Your threads are...odd.

BarbadosItsCloserThanYouThink · 03/12/2024 14:45

Sounds like the Jasmine Allen from The Bill!! Very rough.

Ha no Margate

Margate is supposed to have been on the up for several years though?!

HollyKnight · 03/12/2024 14:47

People still call it "the dole"?

Obviously the local Morrisons is shut so she's only left with Greggs, probably malnourished

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 03/12/2024 14:48

Not a new problem. In 2008 ish I lived in a flat on a council estate, the properties were being rewired the tools kept getting nicked. Car got massive scratch on roof as I parked in the wrong place. Next door upstairs used to play music full blast with all the windows open at 3am. Drivers used to do doughnut turns on the junction, frequent drug raids directly opposite, fireworks in dustbins. People hiding from the police outside the kitchen window. Neighbour upstairs had laminate floor and animals. He'd go out and leave them with balls to play with. I lasted 18 months before I escaped not sure how I lasted that long really.

Deathraystare · 03/12/2024 14:49

You mean there is no Waitrose???? (faints).

LightHorse · 03/12/2024 14:49

It sounds rough. When you walk to the local shop though, is there so much broken class underfoot that it crunches as you walk? And is there razor wire all around the top of the shops and boarded windows, and are there banned dog breeds on chains all over the place? If not, then it could be rougher! (If that is any good to you)

Zee1993 · 03/12/2024 14:49

Haven’t read the entire thread but I’m assuming you live in a council block of flats? If so, me too. Although I’m not dealing with quite the level of what you are, for example the asking for money is out of order. Anything outside of that, noise, drug use, parties etc you need thick skin and jump down their throats quickly. My downstairs neighbour now knows not to have 3 day long benders with his twatty mates as I cause an absolute scene. Don’t be embarrassed to cause a scene, promise they scuttle back and respect boundaries after that. Failing that, police and council with everything recorded.

Morrisons?? How posh are you? It's Co-op all the way in Margate, surely. And not the smart grey co-ops, either, the smelly blue ones.

No they don't. It hasn't been called this for many years which is why I think the OP is talking a load of made up rubbish

Boing98 · 03/12/2024 14:50

Years ago, when I worked in social housing, we were given health and safety training on how to walk down stairs without using the handrails, as used needles were often taped underneath them on certain properties.

My closest Waitrose is 28 miles away, but we have 2 Aldi's 😂

I'm from a traditionally rough area and this sounds pretty bad to me.

Margate is supposed to have been on the up for several years though?!

Margate seafront and town centre has gentrified, lots of Londoners who’ve brought London money in; but there’s still quite a lot of deprivation once you walk a few minutes further back. It’s not surprising: there’s not a lot in the way of decent employment opportunity in the area, and trains to London are extortionate even by South East standards. I like it to visit, but I think there’s a certain kind of hopelessness and lostness among many people there which you don’t get even in deprived parts of London.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 03/12/2024 14:53

Location, location, location.

DyslexicPoster · 03/12/2024 14:55

Sounds shitty if I'm honest. I don't think it says anything about area, just the flats you live in. I come from a very deprived town. I'd see all that and more in my town. But the town was poor. So shitty behaviours at school. Shitty patenting. Shitty people. I feel perfectly safe there when I go home as to me, its very normal ( or was, I can slip back into that mode).

But honestly it's grim to think to that could ever be OK or good or aspirational or normal. I live in one the most desirable areas in England now. It's like two different countries 80 miles apart. There's no hard man dog breeds here, no open drug use and dealing on streets, no parents pushing prams swigging from cans of Stella before midday. I'm so glad my kids don't have to grow up where I did. It's done me no harm but my parents weren't the druggies drinking during the day due to abject poverty with a pit bull.

On top of this, kids will graffiti. Pick your battles. Phone rspca for the dogs. Phone the police for your wipers. Get a backbone and stop accepting this.

coxesorangepippin · 03/12/2024 14:59

It was right next to a waitrose and had lots of green spaces and nice friendly neighbours.

^

No waitrose in op's area, not even a Booths

Op - Blackpool??

GettingStuffed · 03/12/2024 15:00

I haven't heard the phrase on the dole for at least 15 years. It's usually on benefits

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/12/2024 15:02

I didn't know Margate had got as bad as that OP, but yes it (or at least this bit of it) sounds dreadful and if possible I'd be off

Not all lower income areas are as bad though. My son lives in one (disabled needing easy access to town, and inner city areas are rarely that good) but the community is amazing with everyone looking out for everyone else.
Yes there are a few you'd avoid down a dark lane, but most have hearts of gold and I've never seen an XL bully or even much of the police

Gaz98 · 03/12/2024 15:02

It sounds rough but what matters is how you feel.

If you feel safe can relax once indoors then it’s fine.

I lived in a block where there was drug dealing outside, fighting on the street and a prostitute next door and it was hell for me. I never felt relaxed there. Thank god I was able to move out after 6 months.

Cattery · 03/12/2024 15:03

It’s made where I live in SE London look like Kensington.
