Strangers in your block of flats asking you to lend them money ‘til their dole money comes through then stropping off offended when refused

being bitten by Rottweiler outside flats

heroin addict dead in flats - body lay undiscovered for 2 weeks - admittedly happened, but admittedly NOT during time I lived here

kids graffitiing stairwells with pens

my windscreen wipers snapped off in flat car park

woman I suspect is prostitute due to comings and goings - but not 100% sure and u may have got it wrong

loud arguments between neighbours about noise

a few serious ex offenders housed

  • however - it’s otherwise alright ! 👍😀

I was a bit daft really.

i was offered the flat and I asked a friend who was more familiar with the area than me what the block was like and she replied “not brilliant”

I took “not brilliant” literally as meaning - not fabulous but not somewhere you’d outright avoid either

Oh no.

Not brilliant is clearly code for fucking dive, op.

Iliketulips · 03/12/2024 15:32

It doesn't sound pleasant to me. Do you feel safe, OP?

I used to give in a large block of flats, which were owned. It was in a rougher area and there were a few I wouldn't choose to engage with or give a wide birth, but so glad I didn't have to deal with what you do. From what I can gather, the main problem with Council flats around here is people letting their pets out in the corridor to toilet.

Ha no Margate

I thought Margate was meant to be up and coming, a cheaper version of Brighton for Bohemian types etc? Maybe not?

i was naive, admittedly

Yes most of the time feel ‘safe’ apart from when my bell was round at 5 in the morning

not a euphemism

stop judging

The irony, seriously. She’s on a discussion form discussing her living arrangements, it’s a totally normal thing to want to discuss. One of the reasons I think people must make posts like yours is for attention.

Edited

Like mine? Careful now lady, you’re starting to come across as desperate for a badge of honour of some sort. We get it, you’re a lovely and accepting person of all things online. I’m not. Understand that.

And remember, I live in a council owned block of flats! What makes you shiver and clutch your pearls doesn’t make me shiver or clutch my pearls! Peace to you old lady!

You wanna fight down the precinct?

I’m getting my badge of ‘street smarts’ and thick skin organised as we speak. I’ll meet you outside the local whetherspoons and we’ll have it out there.

PandoraSox · 03/12/2024 15:40

Hmm. There are two threads running about crap towns. The other is about Wigan. Both started by new or newly name changed posters. Very odd.

PrincessScarlett · 03/12/2024 15:42

Unfortunately most places now have those kind of things going on. Drugs are everywhere and if you don't think they are in your area you are very much mistaken. Same goes for sex workers, dogs, people on benefits. I live in what people would class a nice village but there are several known drug dealers that don't bother hiding what they do.

Cattery · 03/12/2024 15:44

@Gaz98 No. Not quite that bad

Beeinalily · 03/12/2024 16:04

I had a feeling it would be somewhere in Thanet. It was my dream to retire to the seaside, but soon turned into a nightmare. Largely due to Lovetts, tbh. I'm sorry, OP.

Andoutcomethewolves · 03/12/2024 16:13

Sounds very like my area, with the exception of the dead heroin addict (so far as I know!). Just in my block and the immediate vicinity we have/have had:

  • a known (convicted of a very serious offence) paedophile
  • multiple drug dealers/users in our block
  • keyed cars (suspected revenge for a drug debt)
  • several prostitutes regularly in the square directly behind our block
  • loud music/screaming rows/police visits are all regular occurrences
  • a LOT of homeless people, beggars and drug dealers/users in the streets around the block and the park directly next to it - the park has half a dozen tents where homeless people live and you can't walk five mins to the local shop without getting hassled for money
  • vomit in the stairwell
  • homeless people setting up camp in the doorway - I have tripped over them before
  • most of the neighbours I know well enough to talk to seem to be on UC and PIP

BUT it's cheap and very very central in a brilliant city with lots going on in terms of gigs, shows, events etc so I'm pretty happy overall! I'd be looking to escape if it was a 'faded seaside town' 😬

(No judgement intended of most of the people mentioned above btw, I lay the blame for much of it squarely at the previous government's door - just giving a flavour of my area!)

A friend of mine has a holiday home in Westgate on Sea and it's lovely there. I'd heard that Margate was "up and coming" so went for a weekend.

Let's just say I'll stay in Westgate next time! It might have a few nice restaurants in Margate but the overall feel of the place is still really run down. It needs a lot more money spending on it.

We also went to Great Yarmouth a few years back. In season I think it's OK, but out of season, when we went, there were a load of high/drunk people kicking off on the seafront.

As lovely as the seaside is, it can have the worst deprivation in the country I think, due to them only being part time economies.

Crikey - I added my last comment before seeing you'd posted this and have inadvertently confirmed your thoughts!

SereneCapybara · 03/12/2024 16:23

That's my idea of really rough. No way would I live there.

RisingSunn · 03/12/2024 16:23

Sounds like an absolute nightmare.

I would not want to spend a day of my life in that environment.

Do you have the means to leave?

Overthebow · 03/12/2024 16:25

I wouldn’t raise my children there. Sounds horrible.

Itiswhysofew · 03/12/2024 16:27

In all honesty, I wouldn't be rushing to live there. How do you cope with it?

What kind of state is the lift in?😆

StrawberryWater · 03/12/2024 16:30

Yeah I grew up in similar places. Keep to yourself and you'll be grand. Wouldn't want to live their now though!

LoobyDoop2 · 03/12/2024 14:28

We have a Greggs and a Gail’s in the same row of shops. You need somewhere for the builders to get lunch, don’t you.

They are virtually opposite each other in our high street lol.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 03/12/2024 16:32

It's very rough. You've pretty much checked all the Bingo boxes of roughness there, to be fair. It's hard to imagine how much rougher it could be. The only thing you haven't mentioned is machete fights in the street.

Those on UC and PIP can’t help it. You’re shouting way above your means anyway as you clearly can’t afford anywhere ‘nicer’
