Biden has pardoned his son because his conviction was a "miscarriage of justice".

Is this the total end of standards and even a pretence at integrity in public life? This is a president, who admittedly like all the others, allowed innocent people to be executed in their joke of a justice system. What a hypocrite.

But this is his own son. Biden previously claimed he would not intervene in the juystice system on his son's behalf, or grant him clemency, bht has just gone back on all that. its like the last gasp of a feeble ruler who has lost all sense of wider issues.

Trump should be in prison for his convictions not president. But here we are. That all went away.

I don't blame Biden one bit. He's finally doing what Trump would have done without blinking. I don't understand why he's held to a higher standard.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 02/12/2024 07:29

in his mind (probably): the American voter has made it very clear that they do not care for integrity or the rule of law.

so why shouldn’t he pardon his son? Which is completely legal and his right as president.

Why shouldn't I use an offshore bank account to avoid tax?

notgettinganyyounger · 02/12/2024 04:39

Tbh I would have done the same. Biden is old and may not be around for much longer. I would like to die surrounded by my family, not with one offspring in prison.

Most of us would do the same, I believe.

Is Biden - the current president of the United States - “most of us”? No. But I find his actions understandable.

And considering who Trump has pardoned and will most likely pardon during his second term? I just can’t find it in me to get truly upset about this. But I might not feel this was if I was an American citizen.

BettyBardMacDonald · 02/12/2024 07:32

Agree, @DowntonFlabbie

The American people chose corruption, self-dealing and vulgarity. So Biden might as well save his family. Trump certainly did.

If you can't beat them join them huh.

Guess you empathise with tax dodgers too. Who wouldn't eh.

Yep! Trump is a convicted criminal, a proven rapist who staged an insurrection when he lost the last election and has made no secret of his desire to use his office to come after his political opponents. Honestly on paper I’m absolutely fundamentally opposed to what Biden has done but the Dems have played fair, played by the rules and what have the got to show for it? Trump re-elected. The whole thing is bonkers.

Most men would sleep with a younger woman I believe.

And considering that other men abuse their power then it's understandable they go around doing this sort of thing isn't it.

Cableknitdreams · 02/12/2024 07:35

The point isn't really whether one would or not in Biden's position. It's the fact that the U.S. has a rule allowing presidents to pardon people, at all. It's insane.

unsync · 02/12/2024 07:35

You are looking in the wrong direction. What's that saying? "There's none so blind as they that won't see.”

KillerTomato7 · 02/12/2024 07:36

TheTidyBear · 02/12/2024 07:18

What do you mean what it's going to become?

The current president just pardoned a criminal because he's his son, how much worse can it get than that? 😂

I don’t know how it could get worse. I suppose a sitting President could attempt to overthrow the constitutional system in order to prevent his successor from taking office. He might even engage in illegal schemes to seat “alternate electors,” attempt to pressure state officials into altering the vote count in their states, or (gasp) incite a mob to physically storm the seat of government to prevent Congress from certifying the electoral votes.

But don’t worry; while five of his supporters will be killed over the course of this riot, and thousands more will be imprisoned, he himself will be in no danger.

Oh dear: I’ve just been told all of these things already happened, and the man responsible will soon become President again.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/12/2024 07:36

The fault is within the system that allows presidents to pardon people at will, and indeed protects them from prosecution themselves. It is inherently corrupt.

I suppose Biden thought he had nothing to lose at this point. The American electorate has already demonstrated that they don't place any value on integrity, morality or the rule of law, so perhaps he thought it would be perverse not to use his power to save his son while he still had the chance.

The fundamental problem is with the constitution that allows this misuse of power.

most parents will save their children. It’s simply the truth.

Biden’s actions are still wrong but I find them extremely understandable and human.

It’s also not quite comparable to abusing women. You’re comparing apples with oranges.

Ottersmith · 02/12/2024 07:39

So what? Trump made up all sorts of shit. Presidents can't even break the law apparently now. He's old, he's gonna die soon. We would all do the same.

Well given that you're empathising with powerful men abusing their position, I thought I'd join in.

That is after all perfectly normal to just do what everyone else is doing, according to you.

And this might surprise you but some parents actually report their children for criminal behaviour.

This.

America turned its back on decency. What's the point of standing on principle when most voters clearly don't value integrity and honour?

They didn’t not get elected because they played by the rules and were fair, they didn’t get elected because Biden wasn’t fit to run and they left it to late to replace him, the when they did, the best they had was Kamala, who was utterly useless and weak. That along with their woke rubbish lost them the election.

Now people are trying to justify what Biden has done ‘because Trump’. It’s all bloody shameful.

Self respect and common decency as a human being maybe.

My point is, seemingly in politics playing fair gets you nowhere these days. Trump will be gunning for Hunter - is it right what Biden has done? No. Is it understandable? Yes.
Does anyone who voted for an actual criminal get to to sit on their high horse about this? Also no.

Trump would have done the same for his son 🤷🏼‍♀️

Maybe so, but two wrongs don't make a right.

Nah. Most politicians are self serving. They’re not interested in what is right, just what is right for them to gain advantages. There are too many bad eggs in every party for decency to prevail.

TheTidyBear · 02/12/2024 07:48

Why will Trump be gunning for Hunter? The guy is President and Biden has gone, Hunter isn't even on his radar now.

No idea why anyone has an issue with Trump then.

There's a difference between selfserving and being a convicted felon and an insurrectionist, as well as a serial sexual abuser of women and underage girls.

GridlockonMain · 02/12/2024 07:50

I agree, it’s an insane system, but given the US populace has just voted for a convicted felon to hold the role of president it would be hypocrisy in the highest degree for them to have a peep of a complaint about this.

Its scary and sad but the US is a nation in dizzying, catastrophic decline.

ArabellaScott · 02/12/2024 07:51

Self justification fallacy working hard to suggest it's okay for Biden because Trump.

Morality isn't contingent on other people's morals.
