NO 2 during dinner

Fannyanne88 · 01/12/2024 18:52

Me and DP are currently trying to encourage our DS (2 years) to use potty. It's hit and miss but we've had 5x number 2s on potty so far and everyone's thrilled. We set it up in kitchen/diner behind some chairs as barrier (he likes privacy) so we can keep an eye and he feels comfortable.
So tonight during dinner DS tells me he needs to go so I get potty as per usual. DP who's above average squeamish says no, take him to bathroom as he can't handle eating while DS goes for no 2. I go against his wishes and set up as per usual. Rationale being I don't want to change routine in fear of discouraging Potty use. Also, downstairs bathroom is freezing and time was of the essence.
So am I being unreasonable for "crossing DPs line" or am I gross and DS should not use Potty during mealtimes in kitchen/diner.

If the bathroom is cold downstairs, could you not make sure the potty is in the hall or have the bathroom door open to warm up the bathroom. I wouldn't let my child poo in the kitchen/diner

Sennelier1 · 02/12/2024 19:22

We had potties (plural) in every room and even in the garden when (grand)babies pottytraining. Once they've discovered their control-switch potty only in the bathroom (one upstairs, one downstairs). So as long as your DC is not competely potty-trained YANBU keeping potty as close-by as possible. But you might meat your DH halfway by putting DC on the potty before setting him down at the table. That way he'll also learn eating feels so much more comfortable without the urge to "go". And please, do put potty as far away from the dining table as possible. Yes, it is gross.

BooBooDoodle · 02/12/2024 19:53

We had a potty in the living room as no downstairs toilet. My youngest would happily pee on the potty but became shy when it came to poops. He would scurry into corners like a cat so it was a quick haul to the bathroom. A potty in the dining room is disgusting though. Toddler arse stinks!!!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 02/12/2024 20:13

Consistency as in potty every time?

Hope you're not one of those who takes one when out and about and let your child potty in public whilst failing to cover them for privacy!

Glasgowgal200 · 02/12/2024 20:21

What happens if you have visitors staying for lunch/dinner and the toddler uses the potty in the kitchen then? 🤢🤮💩🚽🚽🚽

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 02/12/2024 20:35

That's bloody disgusting. Anywhere but the kitchen.

Whatthebarnacles · 02/12/2024 20:58

I have an incontinent 10 year old with a ton of learning and intellectual disabilities. He is just starting to learn to say toilet, but it's as he is weeing / pooing so nappies are a must. I'm not remotely bothered by anyone who has a potty downstairs for a toddler. I appreciate I may be hardened in that department so may be in the minority.

Having said that, you lost me at 'downstairs bathroom'. Negotiating stairs, in my opinion, is fair enough. But come on! There's no longer any reason such as 'time is of the essence' when you have that. And the cold? Nope. Sorry. YABU.

Yeah, that's gross while people are eating 🤢 It will only take a few seconds to get him to the bathroom.

They do that in nappies tho? 🤣
My 20 month old walks behind the sofa and does it there lol

Doesn't smell as much when it's contained by a nappy.

Currygirl · 03/12/2024 00:15

So when child moves on from potty to proper toilet are you gonna let him squat in the corner?
You've said the bathroom is too cold

Sorry but that’s disgusting. Just a tip, it’s so much easier to use a trainer seat on the toilet, rather than teach them to use a potty then use a toilet. I just took them regularly from 12 months onwards to get them used to using the toilet and all my children learnt pretty quickly. I have to disagree with the earlier poster who was saying to wait until they were nearly 3. In my experience it’s better to start things earlier, by 3 they are too used to using a nappy.

Packetofcrispsplease · 03/12/2024 08:49

Ugh no , potty needs to be in the downstairs bathroom .
I have 3 children and the potty training to do 💩 definitely trickier than wees .
When I had my first child we didn’t have a downstairs bathroom so that was trickier but we managed

laraitopbanana · 03/12/2024 09:42

DP can get a grip, potty training comes first. Of course, you will teach your child to not go to bathroom whilst eating but in TIME lol...
he is 2 only so he will have to go to the toilet when he needs to. Even if DP disapprove 😳

@laraitopbanana

nah. potty can go elsewhere. No one wants to smell shit when they’re eating do they?

Yeah the potty can be moved, just meant that when baby needs to go, needs to go 👌🏼

I actually thought op meant, he doesn’t want to clean or bring baby to potty during dinner. Hence my answer for him to get a grip.

@laraitopbanana

not a baby but a toddler we’re talking about. Poo shouldn’t ever be in a kitchen, it’s really unhygienic

Goodtogossip · 03/12/2024 12:41

That's really grim. Why wouldn't you encourage your little one to use the potty in the bathroom from the start. Can you imagine taking a dump in the middle of the kitchen while your husbands eating? Same thing really.

Londonrach1 · 03/12/2024 12:55

Why on earth is the potty in the kitchen...a place where you eat. It should be in the bathroom. Can't believe how disgusting it is to have a potty in the kitchen.

I think we all feel the same way!

Therealjudgejudy · 03/12/2024 13:25

Thats gross op. Your husband is dead right.

PorridgeEater · 03/12/2024 23:12

Yes YABU - on this occasion you should have shown more consideration for your partner's wishes.

Balloonhearts · 03/12/2024 23:25

This is why I don't like eating round other people's houses. You have no idea what level of minger they are. I mean you would think a nurse would have a better grasp of hygiene!

This and the nose-picking thread has made me want to take a break from being around people at all.

DogSmiles · 04/12/2024 09:49

Is your partner your child’s father? If so, he can take child to the bathroom whilst you get to eat your dinner.
