NO 2 during dinner

Fannyanne88 · 01/12/2024 18:52

Me and DP are currently trying to encourage our DS (2 years) to use potty. It's hit and miss but we've had 5x number 2s on potty so far and everyone's thrilled. We set it up in kitchen/diner behind some chairs as barrier (he likes privacy) so we can keep an eye and he feels comfortable.
So tonight during dinner DS tells me he needs to go so I get potty as per usual. DP who's above average squeamish says no, take him to bathroom as he can't handle eating while DS goes for no 2. I go against his wishes and set up as per usual. Rationale being I don't want to change routine in fear of discouraging Potty use. Also, downstairs bathroom is freezing and time was of the essence.
So am I being unreasonable for "crossing DPs line" or am I gross and DS should not use Potty during mealtimes in kitchen/diner.

I’m a nurse and not a bit squeamish about bodily functions but that’s disgusting. I’m on DH’s side.

I'm not squeamish really either, but agree that nobody should be pooing near where people are eating, other than into a nappy (which should be promptly changed).

Hoppinggreen · 01/12/2024 19:31

Potty should be in the bathroom if you have one, any other room if not but certainly not the place where people eat

UpUpUpU · 01/12/2024 19:32

OP, kitchens should be a sanitary place of food preparation and eating, they are not a toilet.

Team DH here too.

n3f5 · 01/12/2024 19:27

what, cos he wants to eat his evening meal without the sounds and smells of someone taking a shit right by him?!

yeah. Right. “Pathetic”…..

lol, you will find most people cannot tolerate such grossness….

How did he cope with nappies? Toddlers wearing nappies don't generally walk off to the bathroom

Surely most people remove a baby with a full nappy to the bathroom to change them, they aren't literally shitting in the open while people are eating.
It's not ok to let your child shit in a potty where people are having a meal, it's disgusting, smelly and unhygienic. Don't try to justify it.

Pippinsdiary · 01/12/2024 19:34

Fair enough if no downstairs toilet but no way would I let my child poo where I’m eating. Take him to the toilet

Stealthmodemama · 01/12/2024 19:34

Did your DH stop his meal and take his son to the toilet?

Or was that your job?

Ywudu · 01/12/2024 19:35

🤢 potty in the kitchen is disgusting.

frecklejuice · 01/12/2024 19:36

My dh would lose his mind over this, he is massively squeamish!

Potty should be in the bathroom or at least in another room that isn't the kitchen, bathroom makes sense because he needs to get used to going in there.

Haggia · 01/12/2024 19:36

Ffs

GroovyChick87 · 01/12/2024 19:37

It needs to be in the bathroom. Smelling shit while trying to eat a meal is disgusting.

ValentinesDayCryingInTheHotel · 01/12/2024 19:37

I’m scared to post this but I couldn’t get stressed about this OP, it wouldnt bother me 🤣 if potty was across the room like, not right next to me.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 01/12/2024 19:38

You have a downstairs toilet - use it.

warm it up if it is ' freezing ' !

a potty in both the downstairs toilet and the upstairs bathroom.

Tinaforshort · 01/12/2024 19:38

I’m also team DH. I’d have gone batshit if my DH did that to me when ours were little.

Fannyanne88 · 01/12/2024 19:38

It was DP who started putting Potty in kitchen/diner in the first place that's why I think he's being a bit contradictory. Fair enough- Potty will live in the bathroom like it was originally but I strongly believe there needs to be consistency during potty training to get best results. I appreciate im not the norm but I'm a nurse so nothing grosses me out..not even shit during mealtimes 🤣. I regularly look at images of wounds whilst I happily tuck into my sandwich. TMI I know.

Potty should be in bathroom…..see ERIC website…..potty in bathroom form age 6 months….not only is it disgusting to have it where you are eating…..it is setting very bad example to your child….when they go to nursery they will think they can shit anywhere

Alittlebitwary · 01/12/2024 19:39

I think when you've just started potty training, it's good to have the potty on view and very easily accessible rather than hidden in the bathroom. Encourages independence. When they get used to using it a bit more and can wait more than a second before they do it, then you can move it into the bathroom.

We have an open plan downstairs living situation so we kept the potty in the living room, dining table also in there and was no issue at all taking mine off to the potty, eating or not! Our downstairs toilet is in the hallway through a door so potty wouldn't be visible.
Also... You'd still have to deal with the poo before and after eating whether the potty was right there or away in the bathroom. Presumably DH will also be helping with the potty not just you? What will he do if he's home alone with your toddler and needs to potty him during a meal? He'll still have to smell the shit wherever it happens!

We also have a freezing downstairs loo and it still puts my 5yr old going to the toilet now! You need to be relaxed to do a poo and if you're freezing well it's not going to help a nervous pooer 😂

So yeah I think YANBU.

Fannyanne88 · 01/12/2024 19:40

I'm not sure if it makes a big difference and without wanting to sound pretentious but it's a very large kitchen diner so he doesn't shit where we prep or eat dinner.... it's on the other side behind armchairs.

The potty should not be in the kitchen. Why would you establish a routine that your child empties their bowels in the same room where food is prepared and people are eating?!??

Your DH is right. It's gross. Especially gross for him to use the potty while people are sitting trying to eat a meal.

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 01/12/2024 19:41

Onlyvisiting · 01/12/2024 19:01

Ew. He's not a cat using a litter box, he should be able to generalise that the potty is the goal, not that that corner of the kitchen is his toilet.
I see why you would litter potties about the house as a just in case, but if you are given warning I'd absolutely be scooping him into the closest bathroom.
And no, I couldn't just sit there and continue my meal while someone poos in the corner.

Litter trays are vile and I don’t understand why anyone would have one in their home 💩

Do you want your kid to grow up knowing bathrooms are the place to poo or not?

twentysevendresses · 01/12/2024 19:43

The potty belongs in the bathroom. Your child needs to sit on the potty in the bathroom. 🤷‍♀️

If your husband is that bothered by it then he needs to be the one dropping his knife and fork and jumping up to take your child into the toilet while you sit and enjoy your food ☺️

Jewnicorn · 01/12/2024 19:44

It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, I think after potty training a bunch of kids I’m just completely immune to pee and poo. That said I can also understand why people wouldn’t want that near them at meal time.

If your husband was so squeamish about it why wasn’t he the one taking your child to the bathroom? Or did he expect to sit and continue enjoying his meal while you got that job?

xprincessxjanetx · 01/12/2024 19:47
