How much do you tip at the hairdressers?

Just wondering what is the going rate to tip if it's just a ladies cut and blow dry?

15% because it’s easy to work out quickly in my head.

damebarbaracartlandsbiggestfan · 01/12/2024 01:18

I used to, but a cut in the salons near me (West of London) used to charge an average of around £40 for basic cut, wash and blow dry a few years ago, but now it's closer to £60 so I've stopped. I always found it a bit embarrassing and patronising tbh, but my mum drilled tipping hair stylists into me. I think decades ago most didn't earn much at all, hence the tipping.

I rarely go these days - I used to tip a small amount (5% max) but only because I felt I should. I'm not really sure why we do routinely tip people who are free to set the price they need tbh.

I rarely use hairdressers but would never have considered tipping. I've only heard of it in America where they seem to tip for everything. Really surprised that so many in the UK are!
I might be influenced by me only having uses sole trader type hairdressers. As someone who also runs a business I'd expect them to set their prices for their service/product and I pay that. I agree tips are patronising, the odd occasion I've had someone give me a tip at Christmas I know it is meant kindly, but I'm thinking WTF, it definitely tells you where you feature in their view of the world, ie, lower than them and supposed to be grateful for a handout and pat on the head. No thanks, I'm running a business, not begging for charity.
I 'might' feel differently about tipping a hairdresser who worked in a salon, but honestly I wouldn't want to, set your prices and pay your staff, don't make them reliant on handouts.

that was a long post that didn't really go anywhere

what is a 'main salon'?

Screamingabdabz · 30/11/2024 23:54

Nothing - she probably earns more than me! Why tip a hairdresser and not every other person you come into contact with? There is legal minimum wage here, we are not the USA. Tipping is just unregulated, discriminatory, unnecessary, patronising and encourages upping the ante and costs for everyone.

Oh dear

TofuTart · 01/12/2024 03:32

Popadomorbread · 30/11/2024 18:57

Absolutely nothing. I don’t understand why you would.

This. Makes no sense in the UK.

Care to elaborate? As they have a point.

Care to elaborate? As they have a point.

Not really.

Tip if you'd like, don't tip if you'd rather not. But the schoolmarmish anger one sees on MN towards people who do tip gets so dull.

Scrimt · 01/12/2024 03:44

plus I believe using 'they' to refer to someone's gender is a big no no at the mo.

I mean, I do not give af, but certain factions do.

thymetofocus · 01/12/2024 04:24

Ive been meaning to ask this. I always used to leave a tip for the person washing my hair in cash. This became really awkward over the last few years, like they didn't know what to do with the £10-20 note. I then asked if I could add a tip to the card and they said no. I've tried a few new places and it's clear it's not the done/normal thing to tip so I've completely stopped. I remember friends loving the tips washing hair 30+ years ago but guess things have changed.

VerstaMax · 01/12/2024 05:04

RedVelvetIcing · 30/11/2024 19:14

I stopped because every time I go (every 3-4 months) the price has increased so whatever cash I had towards a tip is swallowed up by her surprise price rise.

Same at my hairdressers, the owner cuts my hair it’s £73

QuintessentialDragon · 01/12/2024 05:16

Zero. I don't tip anyone.

Copperoliverbear · 01/12/2024 05:20

£10

tanqueray10 · 01/12/2024 05:30

I don’t tip throughout the year. She is a professional woman and I would find it a bit patronising. I do give £20 at Christmas and sometimes take her the odd box of chocolates.

I’m happy with the service so wouldn’t change. It’s not a ‘main’ salon - it’s got a good reputation for a reason.

AzurePanda · 01/12/2024 06:33

Aargh, how can I stop tipping? I’m Australian and when I first moved here I was told that “everyone” tipped their hairdresser 10%. I’ve been faithfully doing it ever since but with the cost of highlights etc it’s really bugging me. I’ve had the same stylist for years so not sure how I could just stop tipping!

UseOfWeapons · 01/12/2024 06:53

I don’t tip her. She owns her business and sets her rates.

PerditaLaChien · 01/12/2024 06:55

I don't tip. They set their prices so they should be happy with what they receive and its not cheap - £100 for a 1 hour cut & blowdry is a huge amount.

curtaintwitcher78 · 01/12/2024 06:57

Tenner. Twenty at Christmas.

Sofa1000 · 01/12/2024 07:02

I pay 160 every other month. Large chain. I always tip £10 cash.

PerditaLaChien · 01/12/2024 07:03

I would add as well, i detest tipping culture. Its inconsistent income, better to pay people decent wages than have them hustle desperately in the hope of a tip. I don't really tip anywhere except restaurants that specify service isn't included.

PerditaLaChien · 01/12/2024 07:05

Azure just be honest, say that with cost of living and everything going up, you can't afford to give extra.

Freysimo · 01/12/2024 07:33

I have a cut and blow dry every six weeks, £25. I tip £5 usually as I'd be paying more in a salon and I like what she does. Stylist works in her own home and also does home visits.

sanityisamyth · 01/12/2024 08:02

Nothing. Their prices are their prices. I don't tip the checkout staff at Asda, or the cashier at the bank. Why would you?
