How much do you tip at the hairdressers?

Just wondering what is the going rate to tip if it's just a ladies cut and blow dry?

OP posts:

60 quid just a haircut and I leave a fiver. For my DS 15 £ haircut I leave 2.

I don't. A hairdresser will work out costs and then an hourly rate. So it's not like they're getting paid.
Do you tip the postman? The parcel delivery driver? Your child's teacher?

We don't tip as such but always give £20 to the window cleaner, postman and each refuse man at Christmas. Usually £100 to the gardener. Teachers we used to buy gifts in primary but obviously don't want to humiliate the children by suggesting they take wine and flowers in to secondary school! 😂

PotOfViolas · 30/11/2024 20:11

£5 for a wet cut. I think it costs about £23

MumChp · 30/11/2024 20:12

I don't tip the hairdresser. Is it normal to do?

AffIt · 30/11/2024 20:14

I don't.

I get my hair cut twice a year at a cost of £120 and my stylist is the owner / director of the salon.

She sets her rates and I trust that she makes a decent living out of it without me dipping my hand in my pocket again.

Moveoverdarlin · 30/11/2024 20:17

It’s always £100 plus when I go so I don’t tip anything.

muddyford · 30/11/2024 20:21

Roughly 10%. And at Christmas I give the postpersons a tip too. Not the dustmen as we have four different teams of three.

Viewsaremyown · 30/11/2024 20:25

Jeeez, nothing! As if a haircut and colour wasn’t expensive enough already…!

MissEloiseBridgerton · 30/11/2024 20:28

I don't tip anyone on the basis that I work a very low paid customer facing job that would never ever be considered for tips. My hair dresser earns a lot more than me, she's had 4 holidays and a fully renovated house in the last 18 months!!

Saying that, I love my hairdresser and often bring her a coffee and always get her a Christmas present because she is like my therapist. And she is good at her job.

ALunchbox · 30/11/2024 20:51

I haven't been to the hairdresser's in ages. I didn't realise how expensive it was.

Why £2?.

Question for another thread. Given how much women's cuts are (as demonstrated above), do you ever get push-back from your partner? Do they even know how much it is?

A family member does mine for free, so I'm genuinely curious!

Corinthiana · 30/11/2024 20:57

Push back? Our finances are joint, my husband has clippers and gives himself a no.2.
I pay £75 at the hairdresser. He knows that's important to me so it's never a problem..

dreamer24 · 30/11/2024 20:58

Corinthiana · 30/11/2024 19:04

Nothing. I pay their rate for the service provided.

This!

Dotto · 30/11/2024 20:58

Nothing. They earn more than I do and it's not the 1920s.

I pay £67 every 3 months or so and dh knows what I pay. I clip his hair for him and have also cut dds hair so we save money that way. Ds won't let me touch his hair 😆

FLOWER1982 · 30/11/2024 21:03

Nothing. I pay enough as it is. My hairdresser is always going away on nice holidays, she definitely doesn’t go without.

itwilltakeaslongasittakes · 30/11/2024 21:04

Zero. I pay 2x a man’s cut despite having a v short pixie cut! (Often mistaken for a man so it’s not like they’re doing a fancy “women’s” cut that justifies the higher prices!)

TwinklesToes · 30/11/2024 21:04

I’ve always tipped my hairdresser, but now she has her own salon I assume she charges what she believes is a fair amount I no longer leave a tip.

Moonchildalltheway · 30/11/2024 21:08

A visit to my hairdressers is £90, I go every 6 - 8 weeks so no tip from me.

StarCurator · 30/11/2024 21:18

I always tip around 15%(rounded up/down so that I can give them a note) in cash unless the stylist/colorist is happy for it to be added to the bill using a card. My current hairdresser, who is an employee, prefers cash. I also tip manicurists. Hairdressers or manicurists who are employees rather than business owners don't get paid well, and if they give a good service, as mine do, I think that it's good practice to tip them. I lived for a long time in the US, where hairdressers and manicurists are reliant on tips to make a living (as are servers in restaurants), and tips are expected. A tip of 20-25% is considered the minimum there; 15% seems a bargain!

bananaboats · 30/11/2024 21:21

I don't tip anything but I don't really tip anyone!

loropianalover · 30/11/2024 21:22

€5 for a curly blowdry, and €20 for a colour/cut or up-do.

As a practise, tipping keeps the wages low, because the argument is that they can increase income with tips. A fair wage for everyone with no tipping would be progression.

Grannyinnwaiting · 30/11/2024 21:26

I get my hair colored every 6 weeks and cut every three months probably averages at £120 per visit - I tip £10.
