How much do you tip at the hairdressers?

Just wondering what is the going rate to tip if it's just a ladies cut and blow dry?

OP posts:
surreygirl1987 · 30/11/2024 21:26

Zero. No one tips me either in my career, and that's also fine. We do NOT want to increase tipping culture here in the UK, and I am not going to be contributing to that.

Katemax82 · 30/11/2024 21:26

Normally a fiver for my daughters haircut (about 20 quid haircut)

Corinthiana · 30/11/2024 21:27

I don't get why someone would tip a hairdresser when they set the prices, which are quite high.

AwakeNotThruChoice · 30/11/2024 21:30

Had a trim at Supercuts today (walk in app)

Wasn’t any option to tip cash or round up by card payment. So not the ‘done thing’ anymore. Btw was £17 cut and blow dry

Ilovelblue · 30/11/2024 21:35

It is my hairdresser's own business. I have been with her nearly 20 years and she sets her own prices. She could probably charge what she wanted (within reason) and I would just pay it so I don't tip.

Corinthiana · 30/11/2024 20:55

Why £2?.

Why not?

Rainyblue · 30/11/2024 21:41

I used to tip but my hairdresser’s prices have gone up and now I’m paying nearly £200 for a cut, colour and blow dry so I can’t really afford to tip as well. But I presume they set their prices to cover costs and wages. But have to say that I feel awkward tipping but also feel awkward not tipping….

As to what DH thinks of it? Why would that be an issue? It’s my choice. He knows it’s expensive but has never asked how much it costs. He has the standard haircut for slightly balding men (no2 buzz cut) so his haircut costs nothing!

exitstrategyideas · 30/11/2024 21:41

Absolutely nothing. I don’t tip anywhere!

Corinthiana · 30/11/2024 21:43

arcticpandas · 30/11/2024 21:39

Why not?

I just wondered at the rounding up by that amount to £17, that's all. I wondered if you had a reason. I don't tip at all, so it's not a criticism.

SofandaCox · 30/11/2024 21:44

Nothing.

lto2019 · 30/11/2024 21:46

I don't tip my hairdresser - but I tip the hair washer - they earn very little when training. I tip them a fiver

£0

Absolutely no need to tip hairdressers. They earn decent money. Even the trainees are on national minimum wage, like millions of others in the UK.

Should I tip the woman serving me on the checkout in Morrisons, and the postie, and the refuse collectors, and the GP Receptionist, and my dental nurse etc etc etc...? How ridiculous would that be? To me, in 2024, tipping hairdressers is batshit.

RedRiverShore5 · 30/11/2024 21:49

Nothing, I don't tip anyone else either.

MagentaRocks · 30/11/2024 21:52

£5, but will do more for my Christmas hair. A full head of colour and a cut and blow dry, styled how I want is less than £80 for me. I love going to my hairdresser and my nail tech is there too and I love the atmosphere so happy to tip for that alone.

I don't know really:). Just wanted to leave something since she's really nice. I don't have a lot and I get my hair cut 3 times a year and do my own colour but the boys need to be taken more often so can't really give 5£ every time. 2£ seemed like a good compromise 🤷‍♀️

This too. ^ 2 of the 3 hairdressers in my local market town charge £55-£75 for a cut! Depending which 'stylist' you book. 🙄

No such thing as a 'dry cut' anymore (with these 2...) Only a 'cut, wash, and blow dry,' which is minimum £55. (This is with a newbie hairdresser. The more experienced ones charge £75.)

The 3rd of the hairdressers (a 50 y.o. woman and her 2 daughters run it,) charge £18 for a (dry) cut. You can probably guess which one of the 3 I go to.

Dotto · 30/11/2024 21:53

I'm so encouraged to hear from all these fellow non-tippers. Tipping in the UK can get tae fuck!

Scrimt · 30/11/2024 21:55

I go three times a year and tip around £20 each time.

I8toys · 30/11/2024 21:57

£10

Searchingforthelight · 30/11/2024 21:59

Don't tip
It's completely different to the US here
We have minimum wage, universal credit etc

Also quite annoyed that many restaurants have taken to automatically adding a service charge

Their prices are sky high now, so they should pay their own staff, and allow customers to pay for what is on the menu

anonny55 · 30/11/2024 22:01

Nothing. I pay £40 for a wash and blow dry. Takes 30 minutes I think they get paid enough.

stargazerlil · 30/11/2024 22:02

Nothing, last three hairdressers have done a rubbish job.

downthebackofthesettee · 30/11/2024 22:06

I tip hairdresser £2-£3. Root colour, wash, cut and blow dry is £43.
I tip Evri delivery man and postman £10 each at Xmas. We live out in the sticks and I am very grateful to them both for turning out in all weather to delivermy parcels and post.

So the hairdresser is every time, but the delivery people just at Christmas? Why don't they get something each time, or the hairdresser just at Christmas?

StarCurator · 30/11/2024 22:10

Yes, I agree, 100%! I've been to countries where tipping isn't a practice and service providers receive a proper living wage, including New Zealand, and fully support it. But if I don't tip my hard-working hair stylist, it will not change the situation in the UK or US.
