How much do you tip at the hairdressers?

Just wondering what is the going rate to tip if it's just a ladies cut and blow dry?

Haha that’s very kind of you but it’s not standard!

I don’t even pay £35 for my hair!

£30 cut and blow! Greater Manchester.

flyinghen · 30/11/2024 22:16

Nothing

40thinks · 30/11/2024 22:17

I tip the hairdresser about 10% so £5 for roots, cut and blow dry and £10 for foils, roots, cut and blow dry. Based on the amount of time it takes (& she does everything incl wash) she can’t make much more than minimum wage - she’s self employed and rents a chair.

In return she’ll prioritise me for appointments (eg always save me a slot on the last day before Xmas), she’s done my hair for an event on the day the salon is normally closed and during Covid she left mixed up dye for my roots on her doorstep for me to collect on a daily walk! So for me she gets tips for going over and above

Amazing, I’m in Glasgow and the main salons are all London prices - I haven’t paid £30 for a cut and blow dry in about 15 years!

BraveFacesEveryone · 30/11/2024 22:24

Nothing usually, I pay £60-70 for my usual cut and colour. I always tip at Xmas though between £10-20. But she always tells me not to and I don’t need to. I always tell her I want to and I appreciate her. But she’s been my hairdresser for 10 years, she did my hair for my wedding, I knitted for her baby, we text about books outside of appointments so I’m happy to chuck her a bit extra before Christmas!

Well you are clearly friends with this woman. Completely different scenario.

So the hairdresser is every time, but the delivery people just at Christmas? Why don't they get something each time, or the hairdresser just at Christmas?

I go to the Hairdresser approx 5 -6 times yearly so she gets roughly the same as Evri Delivery man and Postman. Strange as it may seem I always see the hairdresser when she does my hair, I can go weeks without seeing Postman or Evri delivery man

Miley1967 · 30/11/2024 22:38

I don't tip. The prices are so expensive and I'm never entirely happy although not so unhappy that i can be bothered to look elsewhere.

That's not strange! Of course you see the hairdresser each time...... I was just curious about your logic.

Tabbyandwhite · 30/11/2024 23:48

I just round it up. She is self employed and washes my hair too, no junior to do that.

Screamingabdabz · 30/11/2024 23:54

Nothing - she probably earns more than me! Why tip a hairdresser and not every other person you come into contact with? There is legal minimum wage here, we are not the USA. Tipping is just unregulated, discriminatory, unnecessary, patronising and encourages upping the ante and costs for everyone.

Mama2many73 · 30/11/2024 23:58

I don't tip every time. Wash, cut &blow dry is £25 takes about 30 mins.
I always tip at Christmas, often £10, or if they manage to see me at short notice.

I avoid hair dressers like the plague, but when I have to go, I kind of cycle around the local hairdressers so I never go to anyone more than once a year.

Recently, my 13 year old daughter wanted a cut and mine was getting completely out of control, so I booked a cut and blow dry for each of us. My daughter had a trainee and I had a qualified stylist. They each washed our hair themselves (and swept up the cuttings - there appeared not to be a Saturday junior).

We were both very happy with our cuts and the bill came to £57.50 - I'm assuming probably £35 for me and £22.50 for my daughter, but could have been £30 and £27.50 I suppose.

I rounded it up to £65, so £7.50 between them - I figured it's more than 10% and I would usually tip 10-15% in a restaurant. I have no idea if I did the right thing or not!

Jadebanditchillipepper · 01/12/2024 00:12

The last time I had my hair cut was in January and I went for a so called "Specialist curly cut". I wasn't very impressed TBH and it cost over £100. I didn't leave a tip for that.

Onlyvisiting · 01/12/2024 00:17

I rarely use hairdressers but would never have considered tipping. I've only heard of it in America where they seem to tip for everything. Really surprised that so many in the UK are!
I might be influenced by me only having uses sole trader type hairdressers. As someone who also runs a business I'd expect them to set their prices for their service/product and I pay that. I agree tips are patronising, the odd occasion I've had someone give me a tip at Christmas I know it is meant kindly, but I'm thinking WTF, it definitely tells you where you feature in their view of the world, ie, lower than them and supposed to be grateful for a handout and pat on the head. No thanks, I'm running a business, not begging for charity.
I 'might' feel differently about tipping a hairdresser who worked in a salon, but honestly I wouldn't want to, set your prices and pay your staff, don't make them reliant on handouts.

JaceLancs · 01/12/2024 00:27

Nothing during the year but I will give a generous tip at Xmas - this year will be £30 and same for person who does my nails

LoafofSellotape · 01/12/2024 00:31

I don't tip but I put £30 in a Xmas card.

StormingNorman · 01/12/2024 00:38

£400 for the cut and colour. I don’t tip because she earns a hefty salary between the salon and her session work. Slipping her a tenner would just be insulting.

I do take her a bottle of wine at Christmas, and a decent box of chocolates for the staffroom.

I don't tip the hairdresser. Is it normal to do?

Don't be disingenuous.

MellowYellow0000 · 30/11/2024 19:40

What is the reason for tipping hairdressers? Genuinely interested to know why.

I don't tip the dentist, or personal trainer, or physio or taxi driver or any other service I might pay for. It wouldn't even occur to me. They have a set price for their service which I pay.

I also don't understand tipping bin men/women 🤷🏼‍♀️

I always tip cabbies and the hairdresser. I was in the chair for 3 hours yesterday cost £165 ( cut, high lights, toner, blow dry) she will only see half of that. I gave hwr £50 - she is a single mum and it is Christmas.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 01/12/2024 00:55

Should say she did a great job and it looks fantastic for Xmas.

Runskiyoga · 01/12/2024 00:58

I'm surprised by how many say nothing - the answer to this question 10 years ago was often to tip 20%. I didn't then because tipping was awkward and I was skint, and all the reasons people have said above. However, I now ask her to add £10 on the card machine to the 80 odd it costs. Just as an appreciation.
