How much do you tip at the hairdressers?

Just wondering what is the going rate to tip if it's just a ladies cut and blow dry?

I tip £5 as I’ve been seeing my hairdresser for ten years and she only charges me £28 for a cut and blow dry at her home salon. I tipped my nail lady too when I first started going as had no idea whether other people do. I tip every time now and I hope she doesn’t find it patronising.

£5 every time, £10 at Christmas. My hairdresser is brilliant and worth her weight in gold. She’s an employee of the salon, not the owner.

Startingagainandagain · 30/11/2024 19:31

Nothing.

I used to up to a few years ago but with the cost of living crisis and hairdressers putting their prices up I no longer do.

I do my own colour at home and only visit a salon for a haircut every 6 weeks and that's all I can afford.

HeddaGarbled · 30/11/2024 19:31

£10 because she’s brilliant and what I’m paying for the cut is going to her boss, not all to her.

OnTheBounce · 30/11/2024 19:33

A few quid for the trainee doing the back wash, nothing for the owner, but I always give her a nice bottle of wine or chocolates at Christmas, as a thank you for fitting me in at short notice. I am an irritating client

WalterdelaMare · 30/11/2024 19:36

My hairdresser is a lone operation, so I don’t tip. She charges £170 for a cut so I think that’s enough.

My colourist works out of a salon, so I tip her £20.

TimeForATerf · 30/11/2024 19:38

I pay £67 for a cut, roots and half head of highlights. She’s fantastic so I give her a tenner. North.

MellowYellow0000 · 30/11/2024 19:40

What is the reason for tipping hairdressers? Genuinely interested to know why.

I don't tip the dentist, or personal trainer, or physio or taxi driver or any other service I might pay for. It wouldn't even occur to me. They have a set price for their service which I pay.

I also don't understand tipping bin men/women 🤷🏼‍♀️

DGPP · 30/11/2024 19:41

Nothing but my haircut is nearly £200 as it is

NooNakedJacuzziness · 30/11/2024 19:42

Nothing - prices have shot up. They have a QRG code you can scan at reception if you want to leave a tip later - saves any embarrassment

Frankiedear · 30/11/2024 19:42

Nothing, pay £150 and my hairdresser owns the salon, before I moved salons ( about 7 yrs ago) I tipped £10

Bournetilly · 30/11/2024 19:46

Nothing. I notice some people tipping whilst I’m in there and feel slightly guilty but it costs enough as it is.

Timetoread · 30/11/2024 19:46

I don't tip although they have tip boxes with their names on. It's not a thing where I come from and I find it odd anyway.

ttcat37 · 30/11/2024 19:48

Nothing, it costs me a fucking fortune and is really average. I used to bung £20 in a card at the old place I went to for their Christmas do but the new place can ram it.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/11/2024 19:48

Nothing. I don't tip anything ever.

ThisAquaCrow · 30/11/2024 19:48

Nothing. Her ‘hourly’ rate is obscene but she’s also a close friend and I do like how she cuts my hair do I feel obliged to stay with her.

TherealmrsT · 30/11/2024 19:49

I pay by card and there is a selection of prices given including various tip amounts. I feel a bit mean finding the zero option but I can live with that.

Nottodaygoaway · 30/11/2024 19:49

Nothing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/11/2024 19:49

Yabu

StrawberryWater · 30/11/2024 19:50

Nothing.

ConsuelaHammock · 30/11/2024 19:50

I don’t . Why do you tip?

BondStreet · 30/11/2024 19:50

I normally tip around £10

MrsPeregrine · 30/11/2024 19:53

Nothing. I can’t remember the last time I got my haircut. I stopped going because it suddenly became extortionate and I resent paying a fortune to have someone cut a straight cut across the ends of my hair and I would pay a vast amount more compared to a man for the exact same cut.

wonderingconcerned · 30/11/2024 19:53

RedVelvetIcing · 30/11/2024 19:14

I stopped because every time I go (every 3-4 months) the price has increased so whatever cash I had towards a tip is swallowed up by her surprise price rise.

Exactly same happening to me. I get my roots done every 8 weeks - leave with it dripping wet as the 'rough dry' adds another £9 to the £100 - just for roots.

3 times a year a year I add in a hair cut - again leave dripping wet - and its £200....so more than £1000 goes their way each year (been going for 20 years)

So no tip from me .... they have my regular custom but the prices going up each time is stinging as is listening to her about latest holiday in The Carribean, new kitchen etc ... she works hard .... but I have nout left to tip.

DottyBaguette · 30/11/2024 19:53

Nothing. I've paid over £100 for the services, there's no reason to tip.
