How much do you tip at the hairdressers?

Just wondering what is the going rate to tip if it's just a ladies cut and blow dry?

I don’t tip. I pay on card, there is no tipping option and no tip jar so I assume it’s not expected anyway. I hope they don’t take offence but it’s expensive enough as it is!

mynumber · 30/11/2024 19:53

I tip £5 normally. I thought it was the done thing but maybe I'll stop after reading all the replies as I agree with everyone saying how expensive it is!
I also often change hairdressers so next time I do I think I'll stop!
I'd do think I will feel awkward not tipping though as normally they have a tip box or it's an option of the card reader.

wonderingconcerned · 30/11/2024 19:54

Its quite refreshing to read this thread to understand that I am not in the minority not tipping - as I always feel cheap and guilty.

Growlybear83 · 30/11/2024 19:55

I very rarely go to a hairdresser - the last time was about ten years ago. But I used to have spiral perms every couple of years when I was in my late 20s / early 30s and I always tipped the stylist 10% and gave the junior who washed my hair £1 or £2. This woukd have been in the 1980s so it would have been worth having. I had a Saturday job in a hairdresser when I was 15, in 1973, and everyone always tipped the stylist and most gave me 50p or £1. I've never known anyone in real life who doesn't tip a hairdresser, only people on Mumsnet.

Claireabella111 · 30/11/2024 19:55

wow can’t believe the amount of people on here who don’t tip this is so surprising to me.

most employed stylists are not paid well so i always tip. same as low paid waiting staff. Wouldn’t occur to me not to tip

Plastictrees · 30/11/2024 19:56

Getting my hair done is extortionate, it has never occurred to me to tip. Although I did the last time I went, only because I’m relocating so wanted to give a little thank you. I don’t think it is standard to tip in salons, not the more expensive ones anyway.

Eminybob · 30/11/2024 19:56

My fantastic hairdresser only charges £35.50 for a cut and blow so I always round up to £40

AuntieJoyce · 30/11/2024 19:56

£10 and £50 at Christmas. But I am paying reasonable amounts not some of the costs on here

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/11/2024 19:57

£5

Paulie1981 · 30/11/2024 19:57

£0

PlantDoctor · 30/11/2024 19:58

I only get a cheap dry cut once or twice a year (£16) so I do tend to round up to £20. Not sure why really, just what my mum used to do

levantine · 30/11/2024 20:00

My haircut costs £55 and I tip a fiver. It does feel a bit awkward but would be wierd to stop now

xyz111 · 30/11/2024 20:01

I don't. A hairdresser will work out costs and then an hourly rate. So it's not like they're getting paid.
Do you tip the postman? The parcel delivery driver? Your child's teacher?

Notthisapple · 30/11/2024 20:01

I pay £37 every 8 weeks, I think going regularly every 8 weeks is 'better' for them than tipping.

So I don't tip.

Westofeasttoday · 30/11/2024 20:01

About 10-15%. The service may be expensive but the actual hairdresser doesn’t get near that amount of money potentially not far off minimum wage. Should be the same as toppling a waitress or waiter.

NicoleSkidman · 30/11/2024 20:01

MsRosewater · 30/11/2024 19:19

I tip £10 for a £65 cut every 4-6
weeks

I feel as nearly as awkward doing it as not...

I thought it was normal and not tipping was cheap...?

That’s a 15% tip! Crazy

MrsMaudeLebowski · 30/11/2024 20:01

I've only had my hair cut once in the last 5 years- so it was a treat and I chose a senior stylist because I was hoping for a new style. In the end for a cut it was £90 and I asked at the reception if I could also leave a £10 tip in cash. However they didn't take cash tips and instead they had a qr code that you could use to select the stylist and make an online payment.
I didn't mind leaving a tip because I thought that the junior who washed my hair and made the coffee would be given a share - but with this online method I doubt that they do. Which to me seemed a bit unfair. Do cash tips normally get shared out to the junior staff?

GiraffesAtThePark · 30/11/2024 20:03

So glad to see so many not tipping as I always wonder if they’re thinking badly of me for not doing it. I hate the American influence of tipping. It just adds stress. It’s much simpler to just set a price and pay it.

Potatoewithawonkyeye · 30/11/2024 20:03

Jesus wept - I tipped the owner who done my hair £35 the other week!!!! I thought it was standard to tip 20% ???????? Hair cost £165 for cut/blow dry/opalex treatment and balayage . Tipped the hair washer £5. Is it patronising? 😬 (goodness knows my hair dresser deserves money for a pink gin after listening to me complain about my love life for 4 hours😅)

DiscoBeat · 30/11/2024 20:05

£5 or £10 depending if I've had colour or not. I'm surprised at the number that don't. I also tip the pizza guy. DS16 chased his moped down the road yesterday as we were out and he forgot to get cash out ready! Usually give him £3 or £5 depending on the order.

Haha that’s very kind of you but it’s not standard!

Growlybear83 · 30/11/2024 20:07

@GiraffesAtThePark I don't think tipping a hairdresser is a particularly American thing and it's certainly not new. I'm 66 and I can remember my mum going to the hairdresser in the early 1960s very clearly, and she and her friends would never have dreamt of not tipping their hairdressers. I was always brought up to always tip hairdressers, taxi drivers, and waiting staff. I've always given the postman a card with money in at xmas, and our Evri driver, who has been on our route for several years.

cadburyegg · 30/11/2024 20:08

I don't tip mine, it's £55 for a cut and blow dry. Easy Anglia. I also happen to know he's very well off (he's the owner of the salon)

Lja100 · 30/11/2024 20:08

As a hairdresser myself, I never expect people to tip and when they do I'm extremely grateful. You may think it's expensive to get your hair done but take into account the cost of products used for colour, bills etc.

OrsolaRosso · 30/11/2024 20:08

I always tip my hairdresser £10. My hair usually costs me £45 for a cut and blow dry, but yesterday she only charged me £25 because she didn't need to blow dry it. I also paid £25 for my daughter's hair cut.
My hairdresser is lovely, I have been going to her for years and she knows my hair very well. I am always so pleased with my cut, and I can easily go 3 months between cuts.
I have always given her generous tips, it started off being for her holiday fund, then house, then wedding, and yesterday it became the baby fund, as she is trying.
She said that when she has a baby I can come to her house and I can hold the baby while she cuts my hair.
The tips I give her are worth every penny to me!
