How much do you spend on hair and nails?

Holyjolly · 30/11/2024 11:08

I am thinking of getting highlights done and in the past, only ever got haircut for something like £20-30. I have started to get grey hairs now so need to look at more options for hair care.
I am also intrigued by my colleague's getting beautiful nails done and tempted to get mine done.
I haven't had much hairs or nails done in the past and intrigued what I should budget for each month to get my hair and nails done?

When DD was young, the answer to "how much do you spend on self-maintenance" was, pretty much nothing. I had my hair cut about three times a year.

These days, I get my hair cut and coloured every seven weeks, which costs about £110. I get gel nails every 3 weeks which costs £38, and i get my brows threaded every three weeks which costs £4! It all helps me to feel good about myself, so worth every penny.

LBOCS2 · 30/11/2024 12:17

Hair, £100 every 10-12 weeks. Full colour and one bleached and toned section.

I never spend money on my nails - I'm lucky, I have strong nails that don't split or crack and I'm not a nail biter so I just stick some paint on them when I fancy a change.

Eyebrows - £6 every 4-6 weeks, I get them threaded locally. I dye them myself at home just before going down there and I think I recently bought my first pack of dye in about 5 years so the cost of that is negligible!

I love getting LVL done on my lashes - it's like me, but better? But it takes about an hour and is £50 a time so I only really organise that once a year or so. I'm considering it for Christmas, if I get myself together!

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 30/11/2024 12:17

£140 every eight weeks on a cut (which is £100) and a semi permanent.

Nails - nil.

NotMyCircus99 · 30/11/2024 12:18

About £5 on hair dye every half a year or so. Otherwise, nothing, ever.

Backtotherealworld · 30/11/2024 12:19

I have a haircut every 8 weeks (£50). I dye my hair myself every 6 weeks (c. £8 a bottle). Nails and eyebrow wax/tint every 3 weeks (£55).

Can anyone who has their lashes done tell me how annoying the upkeep is? Does it take ages to do the infills? Does it have to be every two weeks or can it stretch to three?

I get infills every 2 weeks as otherwise they look weird but it's only half an hour I can even book 8am and go before work etc

Mel2023 · 30/11/2024 12:23

I get my hair done every 3 months and it’s £40 for a cut and finish. Hairdresser is one I’ve used for years and she comes to my house now since leaving the salon I used to go to. If I dyed it then it’d probably be anywhere from £70-£100.

I don’t get my nails done regularly as where I go to get them done it’s £45 for gel, I have had them done at cheaper places before and it’s wrecked my nails. I can’t justify that expense every month (nails usually last 3 weeks once I’ve had them done) so I save getting them done for special occasions - birthdays, holiday, Christmas etc. It’s a nice treat.

I do get my eyebrows done (HD brows) every 8-10 weeks and that costs £38.

Waffle19 · 30/11/2024 12:36

£40 every couple of months on hair. Used to spend £30 every three weeks on nails but I’ve stopped that this year and now on sky get them done for holidays (and will for Christmas as a treat).

Mountainpika · 30/11/2024 12:40

Very little. Nothing on nails other than a nail file occasionally.
Hair - fine, thick and long, a few inches below shoulder. Ends trimmed two, maybe three times a year. Never been one to bother about that sort of thing. Can't be fussed with make-up. But that's just me.

Motheranddaughter · 30/11/2024 12:40

£100 on hair every six weeks
Only get done for special occasions maybe 6 x a year

whatthedickens5 · 30/11/2024 12:49

Nails £29 every 3 weeks.

5 months of the year I colour hair at home £8 every 6 weeks (winter/autumn). Trying to give hair rest from bleach and dye my hair to my natural light brown colour.

For remaining 7 months I half highlight, tint, snip and blow-dry which is £148 every 6 weeks and my hair is blonde.

JC03745 · 30/11/2024 13:14

I know a lot of older ladies who went lighter/blond as the upkeep with dark over grey was too much.

Surely its the same upkeep to bleach it blonde? I have 3 friends suddenly gone lighter to 'hide the grey'. The grey isn't hidden at all, just the contrast with darker hair and grey is 'slightly' less.

RaininSummer · 30/11/2024 13:17

20 quid on a haircut every 2 months, then shampoo, conditioner, heat spray etc) and nothing on nails other than emery boards and maybe done almond oil.

Togetheragain45 · 30/11/2024 13:21

Nothing, unless you count shampoo and conditioner. I cut my nails short for hygiene reasons, and I leave my hair alone (apart from washing and conditioning it). It's very thin so I want to leave it to grow lengthwise so that I can put it up.

Same here but I get my hair cut every six weeks for £20 a time.

SalsaLights · 30/11/2024 13:24

I get a shellac manicure on my natural nails every so often - probably about six to eight weeks. I do my own soak off and have bare nails in between time. £28 at a salon - family business.

Hair - colour every 12 weeks. I'm going grey but am naturally brunette and my hair grows fast. I have a high blonde balayage so it's blending the incoming grey until it's all gone, at which point I'll stop. Usually about £80-100. Good local salon after a lot of searching!

I do my own brows and facials. I don't have lash treatments as I hate the feel of them.

Threesacrow · 30/11/2024 13:26

Haircut eight times a year at £40 a cut. Highlights every 9 months at an extra £40. (My hair is thick and pixie cut, so the highlighted ends take that long to grow out, I'm naturally dark brown and grey now). I've never had my nails done because I'd be afraid to damage them gardening, so I put on polish sometimes when I go out. So that makes it about £380 per year.

Thursa · 30/11/2024 13:46

Last haircut was about 3 years ago.

Never had my nails “done”.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 30/11/2024 13:49

Nails;
once a month so 8x£30 - £360
Hair:
cut & colour 6x&85 -£510
cut, colour and highlights 2x£110 -£220
products around £180

Averages out to just over £100 a month.

Peppermintcreamz · 30/11/2024 13:53

Usually about €180-€200 every 3 months for a full head of highlights and possibly a cut if it’s needed. But I go more regularly at busier times like December so tend to spend a bit more then. For nails, I only get a gel polish for occasions holidays and Christmas and it’s €35 each time I think. I might get them done about 8-10 times a year.

OfDragonsDeep · 30/11/2024 13:57

For those who get gel/biab every 3/4 weeks do you find it lasts without chipping for that whole time?

Manchesterbythesea · 30/11/2024 14:00

I get acrylics done maybe 4/5 times a year. €20-25 a pop. Highlights & cut maybe 3 times a year..€120 every time.
I get random blowdrys whenever I’m going out or somewhere important €25 (That’s not very often!)

Commonsense22 · 30/11/2024 14:02

Highlights worked when I was younger but now I need a full colour I do it myself. I get a cut every 4/5 months maybe?
Nails once a year before Christmas and it costs 30 pounds.

However if you'd like to treat yourself do. It's definitely a nice feeling!

Yes mine rarely chips and if it does it's because I've normally caught myself with the veg peeler! I've actually gone over 5 weeks before and although the length was unbearable they were still in pristine condition. Normal gel on the other hand I'm lucky to make it 5 days without it chipping, my mums gel looks perfect even after 3 weeks but I have never got on with it.

fivebyfivebuffy · 30/11/2024 14:03

Paint my own nails

Hair is £110 every 9-12 months
