How much do you spend on hair and nails?

I am thinking of getting highlights done and in the past, only ever got haircut for something like £20-30. I have started to get grey hairs now so need to look at more options for hair care.
I am also intrigued by my colleague's getting beautiful nails done and tempted to get mine done.
I haven't had much hairs or nails done in the past and intrigued what I should budget for each month to get my hair and nails done?
What are your usual regular spend on hair and nails?

@RedVelvetIcing, well, I haven't been to either 😄 - I very rarely use clear nail polish on my hands, and I sometimes use a nice colour in my feet in summer.

Costs are greatly dependent on where you live OP. So if you live in London or the SE or in another big, expensive city then the costs will be a lot higher than if you live in a rural area or one with lower average salaries.

I'm in midlands, I think its more affordable here.

Hair roots every 4 weeks c. £52
Cut & blow dry every 8 weeks c. £62
Nails just cut them myself every week (play piano so like them short, and don’t like painted nails) £0

LeaveALittleNote · 30/11/2024 11:31

I do my own beauty stuff. I wish I’d trained as a beauty therapist when I was younger.

I paint my own nails, usually with a Sally Hansen polish. These cost about £4.99 each. I really don’t like long nails or nail art, so I would never consider getting them done at a salon.

Cut my own hair using a tutorial on YouTube (Elle Bangs is the best for this).

Do my own balayage at home. I might go to a salon for this soon though, just to see what it looks like. Hair colour at a salon is an expensive habit for sure.

Comedycook · 30/11/2024 11:31

I do my nails myself. Hair cut two or three times a year at £50 a pop. Colour my hair myself. It's so expensive and my hair grows quickly so doesn't seem worth it.

Holyjolly · 30/11/2024 11:31

However, I am bit frugal sort of person, so I only get a haircut and trim & paint my own nails

After multiple salon fails- high/lowlights (light and darker) so chunky I looked like a zebra, one place burnt my hair and highlights snapped off in the foils, another turned my chestnut hair a purple colour and I needed a yellow mask to reverse it! I can't stand the hours of sitting there making idle chit chat nor the cost.

I get it cut maybe 2-3x a year and colour my own hair with L'oreal casting colours. 2 boxes are £15

Pre-covid, I used to get acrylic or gel nails with refills every 3 weeks. During covid, I started ordering these stick on nails. £10.99 a pack lasts about 2-3mths.

They come with useless, adhesive stickers, but I use this glue:
Loctite Power control Gel Superglue 4g normally about £3.50-£4 a bottle.

Yes, the nails will ping off after a week or so, but I just stick another on and haven't bothered going back to a salon.

Cut - no colour as I’m allergic to them - every 2 months or so - £30. BIAB nails every 4 weeks - £30.

40coats · 30/11/2024 11:35

I get biab nails every 3/4 weeks at €40. Hair every 4 weeks at €50/€65 depending if its a full colour and cut or root touch up. I get a blow dry €25 if I've something on and I'm considering doing this weekly from the new year but I'm not sure I want to be tied to a weekly appointment.
Brows every 4 weeks wax and tint €25 and lash lift every 8 weeks €40. That's it apart from a couple of pedicures over the summer.
Kids are grown up now, I'm older and like/need the boost it gives.

desigma · 30/11/2024 11:36

don't get my nails done and hate the idea and look of fake nails. Used to get my hair coloured at a salon but now I'm mid fifties and the greys are
more persistent, I use a £5 nice and easy semi permanent which I apply every 3 or 4 weeks and it keeps greys at bay. It also improves the condition of my hair. I can't afford £200 every 6 weeks at my salon, which is what the upkeep would be!

AnotherDelphinium · 30/11/2024 11:36

Hair - I have a guy come to the house for a cut and colour every two months and it’s £83 a time = £498 year

Lashes - I go every three weeks and it’s £53 a time (sometimes I’ll go two weeks but it’s a shorter appointment so cheaper then) but ~ £918 year

Nails - I used to go every four weeks for gel nails, which was about £35, but since the summer she’s been on maternity so I’ve done my own with Holy Gels which is a lot cheaper ~ £310 year

leia24 · 30/11/2024 11:39

About 100 a month on hair and 40 on nails. I get a full head colour and a conditioning treatment but when I was blonde it cost me much less for highlights as I'd go less often

MurdoMunro · 30/11/2024 11:39

This may not be helpful to you OP but I’ll tell you what I do and spend.

Don’t get my nails done as my lifestyle makes in impossible to maintain so that would be pointless.

I have some grey hair but don’t mind it so no colouring. For haircuts I need to make a trip to the city which adds time and money to the thing, so I have a dry trim every couple of months. £50 for the cut. If there was someone nearer who could work with curly hair then I would have the time/money to have more done which might be nice. Or maybe get someone to do the eyebrows and chin, that would be a job I’d be very happy to pay someone else to take on!

FoxtonFoxton · 30/11/2024 11:40

I would be cautious over choosing acrylics. They can be extremely damaging to your natural nails. I've seen two people with infections due to bad acrylic applications and removals and my niece spent a year getting her normal nails back to health after she had them. Make sure you are careful about the nail tech you choose.
Hair I spend around £90 for a colour and cut every 8 weeks (friends and family discounted) and nails i just do my own gel.

Beezknees · 30/11/2024 11:40

8 quid for a box dye every 6 weeks ish and 12 quid for a dry trim every now and again. I have very fine hair that grows slowly so I don't need to have it cut often and I dye it myself.

0 on nails, I used to get acrylics done but as I've got older I can't really be bothered.

henlake7 · 30/11/2024 11:41

Around £10 every couple of months for a box dye.
I cut my own hair and Im a nurse so nails have to be plain.

Redhairandhottubs · 30/11/2024 11:42

I spend about £70 every 5 weeks on hair. Nothing on nails. I really don't like acrylics and I play netball so can't have long nails. Short nails with gels look nice but they wreck your natural nails so I don't bother.

Olympicscandal2024 · 30/11/2024 11:42

Nails £40 every 3 weeks. Hair £150 every 6 weeks. I have a lot of grey hair and it shows quickly

Danikm151 · 30/11/2024 11:43

I do my own UV gel polish- £20 for a kit that lasts ages., used to do acrylics years ago and that kit used to be around a tenner.

i cut and dye my own hair-( colour slices) about £40 a year

q1w2e3r4t5y6 · 30/11/2024 11:45

Every 4 weeks I spend £6.99 on box dye and £25 on BIAB nails.

CatrionaBalfour · 30/11/2024 11:46

I have natural nails, just trim and file every week. Those fake nails - I've seen the underside of too many 🤢 - nail brushes are clearly not a priority!
Hair trim every 3 months, £75.

WonderingAboutThus · 30/11/2024 11:46

I just went blond for the first time. £260 to get the hair done and another £100 in products. Can't really afford that but it looks FABULOUS.

Readmorebooks40 · 30/11/2024 11:46

Holyjolly · 30/11/2024 11:22

I am intrigued by people saying colour once a year- would it last that long?

It really depends on how many greys you have. Your hair grows about an inch every 6 weeks so if you've a lot of greys you would dye your hair more regularly (but just the roots). I used to dye mine at home every 3 months but now I've a lot of visible greys so I try to dye it every 7/8 weeks. It's a pain though. I know people who do their roots monthly but they are nearly completely grey and I know a lot of older ladies who went lighter/blond as the upkeep with dark over grey was too much.

DumpedByText · 30/11/2024 11:48

Cut and colour every 8 weeks, £80 and nails every 3 weeks, £36.

Parkodeparko · 30/11/2024 11:49

I get hair cut and coloured every 8 weeks approx $300 (this is considered cheap where I live!). I need to look very professional for work. I keep my nails short and get polish if I have big events several time a year $30.
