How much do you spend on hair and nails?

I am thinking of getting highlights done and in the past, only ever got haircut for something like £20-30. I have started to get grey hairs now so need to look at more options for hair care.
I am also intrigued by my colleague's getting beautiful nails done and tempted to get mine done.
I haven't had much hairs or nails done in the past and intrigued what I should budget for each month to get my hair and nails done?
What are your usual regular spend on hair and nails?

Embrace the grey!
I coloured my own for many years (after a hairdresser advised in my 30s that too much grey for highlights). A few lapses, bur eventually grew the colour out & love it now. A major decision was that if I was going to have grey hair, I wanted an edgy (non-old-lady) hairstyle.

Currently spend around £25-£30 on a cut every 10-12 weeks.
I get my nails done about once a month, and repaint myself in between - £18 for file & repaint, which keeps them in shape. I can't bear a full manicure with someone hacking at the cuticles, I did have shellac regularly for a few years, but wrecked the condition of my nails

zingally · 30/11/2024 11:51

One box of dye about every 4-5 months, so what? £8?

My mum cuts my hair for me about 3 times a year, so that's free.

Nails, absolutely nothing. I paint them myself about once every 5 years when I feel a whim.

I am intrigued by people saying colour once a year- would it last that long?

I get blonde highlights with a root shadow. My natural hair colour is a light brown so it all grows out into a balayage really. If I had greys then I’d need to touch up my roots but I don’t

CandyCane5 · 30/11/2024 11:54

Hair is around £120 every 3/4 months
Plus I spend a lot to maintain it, shampoo & condition £70, serums and sprays about £30. I have quite long hair and like to keep it in good condition.
I don't do nails as I don't have the time, but I used to. Around £45 a month.

doodleschnoodle · 30/11/2024 11:55

Hair every 8 weeks for £80. Nails more sporadically but always over Christmas, £30 for gels with some nail art. I do love having nice nails and the gels withstand a lot of punishment.

I am however contemplating lash extensions. I love the way they look when I have them for special events but the upkeep puts me off a bit. Going to talk to beautician about it when I'm getting my Xmas lashes done and see if I might give it a go.

Personally, I think nails are a waste of time, money and I don't understand the appeal (especially when you have kids and pets... I can't help but think of all the muck that gets under them that you can't see!). If anyone does get them done every few weeks, how on earth do you find the time for it?! I'm genuinely intruiged. I'd much rather put £30 every 3 weeks towards a mini break... I've worked out that it's around £550 a year! Anyway, I digress...

Hair, once a year and around £120 (roots, style, sometimes an all over colour change).

I mean I'm a fairly busy person but one hour max every three weeks doesn't sound like 'how do you find time for it?!' territory surely? Grin

doodleschnoodle · 30/11/2024 11:58

Can anyone who has their lashes done tell me how annoying the upkeep is? Does it take ages to do the infills? Does it have to be every two weeks or can it stretch to three?

hazelnutvanillalatte · 30/11/2024 11:58

I get custom made press-on nails, about £12-15 a set and they last for 2-3 weeks.

Hair I do myself - I cut it myself, use box dye for root touch ups, and bleach and toner for highlights

BlessedAreTheCheesemakerz · 30/11/2024 12:00

I buy a shampoo bar every 5 or 6 months or so. That's it. It's probably 20 years since I last had my hair cut. I clip and file my nails when they get too long to do everyday tasks. I'm not in a job where these things are expected though.

WorriedMillie · 30/11/2024 12:00

Not much at all.
My hair is a long bob and super easy to cut, I have a dry cut every 2 months or so. I dye it every few weeks, dye is £15 for 2 boxes
I have a reaction to nail varnish and it wrecks my nails, so nothing. Not sure how I’d be with gel, as I haven’t tried…

user1471548941 · 30/11/2024 12:00

Full head of highlights every 6 weeks for £70. Trim every 12 weeks (long straight hair, not much maintenance required) for an additional £20.

I don't get a blow dry every time as I know it's an expensive habit.

Nails twice a month, £36 for Builder gel + a coloured polish over the top.

South East- think my hairdresser is crazy cheap, which is why I am so loyal and the nails are on the pricey end but it look me a long time to find a responsible tech who cared about the condition of my natural nails.

ThinWomansBrain · 30/11/2024 12:00

With white hair, my brows became almost invisible - I did pay around £250 for semi permanent brows - that was about 3 years ago, and would do that again if needed - impressed at how well it's lasted.

You can go about once a month but they do start getting patchy and flipping the wrong way after that which is annoying. Infills take maybe 20-30 mins. I prefer strip lashes now

Hmm... when you've got a baby and a child with a ton of extra curricular activities, little to no childcare, a vague desire to exercise, keep a house clean and go to work and hour is so much time to me! Hence why I only really get my hair done once every year.

Good for you if it's not an issue though, I'm jealous... I'd just use my hour differently but each to their own.

NoNoNona · 30/11/2024 12:01

Nails €0 I file them myself, that is enough.
Hair €100 every quarter for cut & highlights.
€50 every 4 weeks for a cut & blow dry

DustyMaiden · 30/11/2024 12:04

I get my nails wrapped so they don’t break , don’t like extensions, too hard to clean. £50 a month.
hair hardly ever, cut and colour £170 , things are expensive here. Thinking of going grey as I colour it myself every 3 weeks.

youve987456 · 30/11/2024 12:04

£150 every six weeks for cut and colour but this is in central London. It does hurt but I don't pay for any other beauty type treatment ever and don't spend on clothes. My hair is relatively short and once it gets too long it can impact my mood so I think the £150 is worth it.

SuperfluousHen · 30/11/2024 12:07

I’ve embraced the salt and pepper and just get a cut now every seven weeks or so. £45 and worth every penny. Finally found a hairdresser who understands naturally curly hair.

doodleschnoodle · 30/11/2024 12:07

I mean I work, have a 5yo and 2yo, do two voluntary jobs in the evenings, have absolutely zero childcare (our parents are dead bar my dad who is 4 hours away), but it's just one of the things that I like to do for myself because I have to prioritise myself sometimes, not other people's commitments.

Since my mum died, I've tried to do more self care as she was always trying to get me to do something for myself. So I got a cleaner, get my hair done regularly so it always looks nice, and book in for a massage once a month, and it's really improved how I feel about myself. So in some respects, an hour every three weeks feels like very little time to make me feel good about myself!

I think it's easy to fall into the 'I have no time' trap, but it's just about what you prioritise really. I am pretty flat out day to day, but I need to make time for stuff that makes me feel good, I have to make myself a priority sometimes and not spend my life doing stuff for other people!

Femalefootyfan · 30/11/2024 12:09

Haircut and colour every 6/7 weeks (my hair is short and gets straggly looking quite quickly) costing £60 then every other visit I have a half head foils which is an additional £10.

Nails I’m currently getting gel polish once a month but planning on cutting back after xmas to every couple of months and do them myself in between.

I have time because I’m retired so I can go when it suits me rather than fitting in with what appointments are left.

Flippingflamingo · 30/11/2024 12:09

Nails £33 a time for a gel manicure (every 3 weeks).

Half head of highlights £65.

StepawayfromtheLindors · 30/11/2024 12:10

Hair - cuts, highlights, top up highlights between times probably about 300 a year
Nails - around 100 over the summer for pedicures. I hate painted fingernails.

doodleschnoodle · 30/11/2024 12:11

@hazelnutvanillalatte Thanks! That's not too bad actually. I just have such pale lashes and even with mascara on my eyes never look anywhere near as nice as with my lashes done. I get strip lashes for special occasions but I'd love to look like that all the time Grin

mindutopia · 30/11/2024 12:12

Nothing on nails. I had my nails done for my wedding like 15 years ago and never since.

Hair, when I have had it coloured in the past, it’s been £150-300 a go. I only had that done maybe every 9 months. Haven’t been to hairdresser since before COVID though. I now just cut it myself for free.

Lucytheloose · 30/11/2024 12:15

Haircut about once every three months £60 plus a tip. I don't do anything to my nails apart from keeping them short and clean.
