I think we definitely slipped into too many after tonight.

The delivery driver asked me if I'm ok/if everything is ok , because he hasn't seen me in a long time.

Ooops. Grin

It's lazy.....expensive and unhealthy.

Some people work very hard all week, I wouldn't say they were lazy. It's less expensive than a restaurant. The health side, well moderation is the key. As with anything you consume at home.

Lazy…then so is having a cleaner or a gardener, who cares. Not everyone wants to make their own meals all the time, especially if it’s only so that people don’t think they’re lazy.

I don’t eat many takeaways but that’s due to most being unhealthy. If the takeaways I liked were healthy and didn’t have loads of calories in, I’d eat them more often as I don’t care if it’s seen as lazy and can afford it. We go out to dinner often as we can have a healthy meal that we enjoy and don’t have to cook. I suppose that’s lazy too. 🙄

How do people afford so many takeaways? Thought the majority of people were struggling financially...

We afford them by going to work, and getting paid. Not struggling at all thanks.

They are rare in this house. Always find them disappointing plus I like cooking.

Same here. If a friend is over and wants one, I'll get one, It's sometimes easier than cooking something and having to decipher what they like or don't like when what they really want is a takeaway pizza or curry. I ordered a McDonald's once when I was up early after nightshift and wanted more time to sleep and get ready, than to be taken up preparing food, but that was a real one-off.
I like to cook, I like my health and ordering over-priced food for the sake of it isn't my thing.
I totally appreciate the manner of other people's thinking though.

I live rural, its a long drive to find a take away so we dont very often. Usually get a Chinese on the way back from the airport when lifting family for a visit so once or twice a year

When I lived in London it was take out at least once a week, pizza, Indian or Chinese , and no we weren't fat, we were young, height of careers, busy

Now we are middle aged and whilst the idea of a take out is so enticing, the reality is - we will be up half the night dying of thirst and we will be feeling decidedly yuck the following day. Too much salt and sugar

Saturday night and its DH saying will we get a Chinese ? And Im ok and as the evening goes on Im "Ive found this that or the other in. the freezer, wont take long " and the take out idea is shelved

I can cook a really decent Indian, Chinese , doner, fish and chips. We also have a proper wood fired oven in the garden and it turns out a pizza better then any take out . Also has a rotisserie in it, so once it is lit, Ill throw in a chicken when it cools a bit, and maybe stick a casserole in on the side ( no we aint posh or foodies, DH is a builder and I have just HAD to learn to cook everything from scratch out of necessity )

For us, our guilty pleasure is a cheeky KFC when as far as the next town. That or a McD's. Because we dont have it every day, because its not available, it makes a wee treat

Aliflowers · 30/11/2024 00:52

Takeaway here once a week and we usually eat out once a week too. I don’t cook at the weekend and not two shits given. All the food we order is delicious hence why we order it ti begin with and as much as I’ve tried I’ve never come close to recreating the Saag from my local Indian

BigDahliaFan · 30/11/2024 07:48

The choice here is so poor I'd rather get a ready meal from M&S whencan5 be arsed to cook.

Westfacing · 30/11/2024 08:00

Ordering in a meal for the family on a Friday night, say a curry or kebabs, is a treat and if you can afford it why not after a busy week.

But I can't get my head around having McDonalds delivered - doesn't the cost of delivery and tip for the driver almost outweigh the cost of the cheap food?

PandoraSox · 30/11/2024 10:49

Never get them these days. Too expensive for what they are. I would rather skip takeaways and spend the money on eating out instead. Which is also very expensive now!

fedup33 · 30/11/2024 11:15

@suki1964 I can think of some takeaways from many years ago which were really great. Vibrant tastes, something I hadn't had to cook or think about. The anticipation of it all.

Now, it's just rubbish. Always a let down , unless you want to spend silly money.
usually a bit of something in the freezer. It's often fatigue disguising itself as hunger.

It's lazy.....expensive and unhealthy.

So? Are people never allowed to take the easy option? I don't believe there is a person on the planet who isn't lazy or unhealthy some times. And yes that includes you!

It's lazy.....expensive and unhealthy.

Nothing wrong with being lazy.

As for unhealthy - well, it depends what you order. A good quality, sourdough pizza with vegetables isn't unhealthy. Neither is vegetarian curry, or chicken noodles, or sushi, or any other number of things.

We order chippy tea twice a month - of course it's not the healthiest but it's two meals out of nearly 100 in a month. It's hardly danger levels of bad food Grin

MrsSchnickelfritz · 30/11/2024 12:01

I would actually argue that if you're wound so tight that you never allow yourself to be lazy, or eat anything unhealthy or treat yourself occasionally, your mental health is probably not great.

What's the point in being in peak physical condition if you're absolutely miserable?

MargaretThursday · 30/11/2024 17:36

ohtowinthelottery · 29/11/2024 18:55

We get a takeaway about once a year - usually an Indian and even then we have to be desperate!

I find the food usually disappoints and is ridiculously expensive. There's always something in the house to rustle up a quick tea from scratch so we're never that desperate and certainly don't see it as a treat.

This sort of comment always amuses me.

My parents would have said similar. They did say similar. Oh we were such lucky children that had parents that cared for them so much they'd always make good nutritious nourishing food that tasted so much better than anything that we'd buy. Dutifully we'd agree.

But actually I always secretly thought I'd rather be one of those poor unfortunate children eating that "rubbish". And now I'm an adult I'm sure that I'd rather be. 😁
And if you never have a takeaway, then it automatically becomes a treat. We have one far more often than my parents for who it was once in a blue moon, and I still feel I've had a treat, even if the food wasn't the best.

Dp just ordering the third one this week, 2 McDonald's and a kebab. It will be Indian tomorrow and full English Sunday morning

Are you not concerned about the food you eat?

Are you not concerned about the toxins in the air you breathe every single day?

SharpOpalNewt · 30/11/2024 18:43

We have one a week, every Friday night.

kaela100 · 30/11/2024 18:51

We have one or two a month. The trick is to order from different types of restaurants lol

I'd agree with you, tbh. Good mental health and the ability to relax and say "fuck it" occasionally is pretty vital.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 30/11/2024 19:56

We don’t have delivery here so have to go and collect hence a takeout isn’t that common. Just had one tonight - Indian (very nice) as both DH and I worked over 50 hours this week and not cooking was too appealing.

BondStreet · 30/11/2024 20:05

We have one once a week and I’m not ashamed to admit it despite the weird judgement on here.

We have a variety, Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Argentinian, Italian etc. I couldn’t make the food even if I tried, my pantry isn’t big enough to house the ingredients nor do I have the inclination to spend hours slaving over a stove on a weekend when I’m knackered after working a heavy week.

MadKittenWoman · 30/11/2024 20:15

About once every couple of months.

ThinWomansBrain · 30/11/2024 20:17

I don't get takeaway delivered ; other than that I do use too good to go quite frequently.
If I want a treat I'm more likely to eat in a restaurant, although I recently realised that my Gold Pizza Express benefits were about to run out and ate there three times in two weeks - visit three felt like less of a treat.

justasking111 · 30/11/2024 22:18

Too good to Go is something else that hasn't taken off in our bit of Wales. We have Morrisons, ASDA and a couple of bakeries. Our population density just isn't high enough.

TitaniasAss · 30/11/2024 22:33

I really want to try Too Good to Go but I live in a tiny village and the pick ups mean I have to get in the car at about 9pm and drive to the nearest town. At the moment I'm in my PJs by 7 and really can't be arsed to get dressed and go out again!
