I think we definitely slipped into too many after tonight.

The delivery driver asked me if I'm ok/if everything is ok , because he hasn't seen me in a long time.

Ooops. Grin

We have more or less given up on takeaways. Very expensive and not that great. And we live in London. It got to the point when DH and I were spending £40 plus on non descript pizzas when I drew the line.

Yes, I've noticed that when I visit my sibling in an expensive part of London it is ridiculously overpriced, we are in the south east and our local Thai restaurant tastes much fresher and is half the price (still pricey at £55 for 3).

Sugargliderwombat · 29/11/2024 19:49

I moved and a year later went back to my local chicken shop, not a chit chatty place but I was met with genuine concern about where I'd been and remembered my order 😂 whoops.

BlueSilverCats · 29/11/2024 19:39

It's never that much and definitely not average. It's actually great food , that tastes amazing (to me at least) and some places are the only ones where I can get food that tastes like food from my home country. The excitement! Grin

Just out of interest, do you mind sharing roughly where you live - or the type of place you live?

I would guess that you either live in London or in the centre of a very large city like Birmingham or Manchester?

Outside of these areas takeaways are, generally speaking, definitely not "great food".

I live in a tiny village and our nearest take away has the best food I've ever had from a take away. 🤷

LittleRedRidingHoody · 29/11/2024 19:53

Hmmm @Another2Cats I'm in the Home Counties and mine seem ok? We are a commuter town though so I think the demand is high 😂

Is it fuck. Break down the mail then.

I'm not the poster you're replying to but it's fairly similar here (Cumbria).

It's about £6.80 for a main dish, plus £2 for rice/noodles. A bit more if you want a "special" main or rice, but even then it's only about £10-12 per person and the portions are absolutely massive.

ah ahah excellent clap back 🤣

CharlotteRumpling · 29/11/2024 19:55

£16 to 18 for a main dish where I am, and portions getting smaller and smaller.

justasking111 · 29/11/2024 19:45

Our local Chinese around £8 per meal and it's too much to eat. We're in Wales.

My god I miss Wales prices.

That's insane! Where are you? That's triple what we pay Blush

We used to order takeaway from the Chinese on the sane random weekday every week always the same dishes. They rang me at Christmas to collect our free order! Now thats good customer service! It did make me question if we were eating too many....

Careergoals · 29/11/2024 20:00

Years ago BT had a scheme called ‘friends and family’ where you’d get a discount on numbers you made the most calls to.

I had a call from BT asking if we’d like to join the scheme. I said yes, nothing to lose. The lady reeled off the most called numbers and I was utterly confused as the number we called most wasn’t my mum or mum in law or any family.

It took a minute for the penny to drop that the number called the most was of of our local Chinese takeaway 🙈

No wonder I’d gained a stone after moving in with DH 😂

London Zone 3. Actually I overstated maybe £14 to 15 for a main. It really adds up for 3 adults.
We all cook though so its not all on me.

LostTheMarble · 29/11/2024 20:05

I have a takeaway once a week when the kids are with their dad. I have the extras for lunch the next day and that way I can make them something quick for dinner before bath/bed//starting the week again. Bloody looking forward to a hot curry tomorrow, have a stinking cold and will be just the thing to sweat it out. Going out to the local curry house is much cheaper than delivery and fresher, so when have a friend available to do so much prefer that. It doesn’t impact my finances, I don’t eat badly during the week so it’s not an issue as far as I’m concerned.

If it's Brampton, you're lucky. Good TA.

R053 · 29/11/2024 20:07

I probably only get takeaway a few times a year usually around Xmas, Easter or some other time when the kids go to the ex but when I do, it’s Thai every time. I always order creamy satay chicken with coconut rice. It’s a real treat as I am usually on a low cholesterol diet and I love the veggies in it too.

Waffle19 · 29/11/2024 20:10

I’d say we get on average two a month, recently we got two in a week for DP’s birthday and it felt very excessive. We have freezer tapas on Friday too, can’t find the other PP who said that!

BlueSilverCats · 29/11/2024 20:10

@Another2Cats maybe I have low standards.Grin

Not in any of those places, quite a small town really, on the periphery of a bigger one.

We do get the overground , so links to London, but no red buses. Sorry trying to be vague. I can PM with a more specific location if you really want to know.

FelixtheAardvark · 29/11/2024 20:11

We get one every 6 months or so. It's a treat when none of us feel up to cooking.

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 29/11/2024 20:12

I could go for months without any takeaway then might have 4 or 5 in the space of 2 weeks. I rarely enjoy them afterwards tho, always make me feel crap

Toooldtopretend · 29/11/2024 20:13

Misfitkickedoutonthestreet · 29/11/2024 18:33

Wow those of you who order them regularly, do you not mind spending that much money on food that's usually kind of average? I have ordered a curry tonight for 3 of us and it was £54 - I certainly can't afford to do that more than once every few months.
Also they give me heartburn and I always feel grim the next day. I'm only doing it as dc loves it!

We have about three a year. Never worth it as I can’t sleep after - always have a mouth like a desert all night because of all the salt. I really can’t understand people eating them weekly or more.

yukikata · 29/11/2024 20:13

For me, any more than about once a fortnight is a lot.

It's very arbitrary though. Everyone's different.

fruitbrewhaha · 29/11/2024 20:14

It’s expensive where I am. Paid £66 for 3 curries, 2 nan, 2 rice, 2 onion, and potato and spinach sides.

Plus I make nicer pizza myself and I’d be unhealthy eating takeaway more than once in a blue moon. I look after my waistline.

Comedycook · 29/11/2024 20:14

Any more than one a fortnight would be a lot imo.
