were...bloody amazing!?

AIBU to think this band might be the most underrated band in the UK...EVER!?

I have just blasted out their greatest hits whilst wrapping presents and had a nostalgic sing-along. So many wonderfully written songs, great singers too. Criminally underrated in my opinion.

AIBU?

A Little Time - love that one most I think.

Those who hate Perfect 10 - have you never watched Fat Friends? Each to their own.

Elphamouche · 28/11/2024 18:52

Absolutely agree, fantastic band.

usernother · 28/11/2024 18:59

I love that Paul Heaton visits some pubs wherever he's playing and leaves money behind the bar.

DerekFaker · 28/11/2024 18:59

I absolutely HATED them. Sorry OP.

RuudVanWrinkleBreath · 28/11/2024 19:06

I am big fan of their 2005 concert 'Live in the forest' which was released on DVD at the time but it's also on youtube(well individually uploaded songs from the concert.)

The band and crowd were spot on during this gig, with Alison Wheeler on female vocals at the time. I have to say she is a great singer, and she particularly nailed 'A little time' during this gig. The women in the crowd sing the chorus parts really loudly with her😁 real hair on the back of the neck performance

That's a good one

I love beautiful south too. Seen them a few times and Paul Heaton on his own (Jacqui Abbot was ill) I also loved the house martins.

So many great songs, I've been singing the lyrics that I've been ready on this thread

FrivolousKitchenRollUse · 28/11/2024 19:17

Sensational band (as were The Housemartins). Whilst lots of the lyrics are funny and witty, I think the ballads are under rated. They reflect real life love, not the fairy tale type love that many other songs are about. PH is a top bloke as well.

Carouselfish · 28/11/2024 19:17

Can't bear them. Their vocals or the style. So, nope.

the80sweregreat · 28/11/2024 19:18

I've just played Happy hour in honour of this thread

Coachvikki · 28/11/2024 19:19

You are not being unreasonable. I revisited them earlier this year and it is banger after banger.

Shadyshady · 28/11/2024 17:53

I thought that was going to end...are shite!

One of a cluster of beige bands that surfaced in the 80's and drove me mad.

Dreary and overrated at the time. Pointless now!

Not pointless for people who still enjoy listening to their music though.

Horses for courses and all that.

DerekFaker · 28/11/2024 19:24

Also, and maybe it's because I listen to a lot of indie, rock and stuff like Tom Waites and Leonard Cohen, but I really don't think BS's lyrics are all THAT clever. If anything, I think Paul Heaton thinks he's a lot cleverer than he is. A cut above a.lot of pop music though I suppose.

RuudVanWrinkleBreath · 28/11/2024 19:25

It's great to read so many people playing Beautiful South music after reading the thread.😊Every time I play the Beautiful South, it takes me back to the 90s which was an incredible period in my life. Brings back so man memories from that time!

For those who like both Beautiful South and Housemartins, there's a really good tribute band touring called The SouthMartins. I've been to see them and they're excellent.

I really need to start listening to some of the old bands/singers who I loved back in the 90s.

REM were awesome
Old U2 stuff
Radiohead
The Black Crowes

I'm going to make myself a Spotify list!

Don't make yourself a spotify list....
Make a Mumsnet 90's spotify list and link it for us to use too 😁
Someone else did that recently and twas amazing! The 80s and it got me to Leeds and back one soggy weekend!
