were...bloody amazing!?

AIBU to think this band might be the most underrated band in the UK...EVER!?

I have just blasted out their greatest hits whilst wrapping presents and had a nostalgic sing-along. So many wonderfully written songs, great singers too. Criminally underrated in my opinion.

AIBU?

That song Perfect 10 is next level annoying. BS are boring but I guess we all like different things.

Tiggerspal · 28/11/2024 15:22

Huge Paul Heaton fan, in fact going to see him on 9th Dec. We've seen him a few times recently and they've been great (miss Jaqui Abbott though).

EvilsElsasPetSnowman · 28/11/2024 15:22

I also love the twist at the end of little time. You don’t get these kind of songs anymore

poppymango · 28/11/2024 15:22

Ohhh yes I love them too!!

Probably the most annoying bad ever! So bad they make me feel nauseous

Fake elvis-american accent, cringy lyrics, overly peppy music. Hate them with my whole soul!

Hahahaha you hate them even more than me!

GrimDamnFanjo · 28/11/2024 15:23

Brianna was quite critical of Paul's attitude to women in the earlier songs I understand.

TwistedWonder · 28/11/2024 15:25

They’re not my type of music so only ever heard a couple of their songs. The one with all the girls names is probably up there in my list of songs I’d rather cut my ears off than hear again tbh

Tillow4ever · 28/11/2024 15:28

I absolutely love them and often say they are extremely underrated. Paul Heaton is a bloody genius!

I listen to them frequently. I saw them live in the late 90's at DeMontfort in Leicester and thought they were fantastic. I remember them telling the crowd that 1 in 7 households in the UK owned a Beautiful South album. Such random fact.

I saw "The South" (no Paul or Jacqui) this summer at a festival and they were really good - I sang and danced the whole set and just felt so happy. My 12 year old son was watching me and after their set told me he wanted to buy me a ticket to go and see Paul and Jacqui perform for a Xmas present! He could clearly see how much I loved them, and I had been talking before the festival about how I wasn't sure how good it would be without the 2 main voices.

Might switch back to my Spotify Beautiful South playlist..., their songs were all in my top 5 Wrapped last year and suspect they will be again this year.

Hillarious · 28/11/2024 15:29

Love them. Saw Paul Heaton live a couple of years ago, when I was in the year of my 60th 25th December and 59th 4th July. He was obviously singing to me.

Tortielady · 28/11/2024 15:29

When they're good, they're very, very good. (A Little Time, Song For Whoever.) When they're bad, they're horrid. (Perfect 10 🤮)

Tillow4ever · 28/11/2024 15:30

Also, I love Paul's attitude to everything. He is a millionaire but still lives in his mid-terrace house. He put £1,000 behind the bar of something like 60 pubs in the country to buy his fans drinks on his birthday. He caps his ticket prices and will not let them go above a certain value because he doesn't want to rip off his fans. He's a great guy in my book.

Mary46 · 28/11/2024 15:30

Loved them too op. Great songs

Funkyslippers · 28/11/2024 15:33

I love them but they've also done some tripe too. Even Paul H admits it. I prefer Briana Corrigan's voice to Jacqui Abbot but Rotterdam is my go-to karaoke song. When I saw them live Jacqui had absolutely no stage presence but she's got better over the years

Doggymummar · 28/11/2024 15:38

The house martins were preferable, but that album you mention is ex elkent

AmytheDancingBrick · 28/11/2024 15:39

They are absolutley brilliant - but then I'm old enough to remember The Housemartins...

DrZaraCarmichael · 28/11/2024 15:40

I loathe and detest them with a passion. There aren't many bands where I have to change the station completely when they come on the radio but the Beautiful South are up there, along with Robbie Williams.

HATE them. Hate their plinky plonky sound, the twee little melodies, the 6th form politics, the lyrics, EVERYTHING. Yuk.

I have the same reaction to Robbie Williams too! Same weird vocal timbre 🤢

Councilhousecheekbones · 28/11/2024 15:44

Love so many of their songs.

Perfect 10 is not my favourite - there is a certain condescension and smugness in this song.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/11/2024 15:46

Every song sounds the same.

MyOtherProfile · 28/11/2024 15:46

Absolutely love them. And the Housemartins. And Paul Heaton on his own. Great set at Glastonbury this year with Paul and Norman.

Their entire modus operandi is condescending and smug. I don't mind FatBoy Slim who I think used to be in the Beautiful South, but then again his music is different and he doesn't sing.

CorbyTrouserPress · 28/11/2024 15:47

Anyone saying their lyrics are ‘twee’ clearly haven’t listened to songs such as ‘Mini Correct’

WinterFollies · 28/11/2024 15:47

WinterCrow · 28/11/2024 14:13

I can’t stand them. Twee lyrics, always sung smugly and in too high a pitch, with music that sounds like it was written by AI.

If they come on the radio I have to turn it off.

Deacon Blue on the other hand … fabulous.

OMG - THIS! The lyrics are ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE

I really really really dislike them

Oh I love them and always have. They remind me of my childhood, clearly my parents were in that 1 in 7.
