were...bloody amazing!?

AIBU to think this band might be the most underrated band in the UK...EVER!?

I have just blasted out their greatest hits whilst wrapping presents and had a nostalgic sing-along. So many wonderfully written songs, great singers too. Criminally underrated in my opinion.

AIBU?

Oh God, no. When I hear Perfect 10 I want to smash up the radio. EW.

I can't stand it either! The chorus is just awful (as is tye rest of the song).

Thepeopleversuswork · 30/11/2024 10:14

@HeadacheEarthquake

Interesting that not many people are middle ground on this. They are highly marmitey!

They are very Marmite. I did a mini straw poll last night after seeing this thread: asked my sister, my DP and a couple of old friends.

Everyone who I asked except my DP loathed them. My DP loves them. Everyone has a strong view.

Runki · 30/11/2024 10:20

I can't stand Perfect 10 or A Little Time, but I think Old Red Eyes is Back is rather wonderful. As for Let Love Speak Up Itself.....I think it's one of the most overlooked and quite frankly beautiful love songs ever. I can't listen to it without crying.

MaggieBsBoat · 30/11/2024 10:25

Cannot. Stand.

Also, I love Paul's attitude to everything. He is a millionaire but still lives in his mid-terrace house. He put £1,000 behind the bar of something like 60 pubs in the country to buy his fans drinks on his birthday. He caps his ticket prices and will not let them go above a certain value because he doesn't want to rip off his fans. He's a great guy in my book.

Totally agree. He hates seeing people ripped off. He did the same this summer when I saw him in my home town. One of the few bands I would see again and again.

Spidey66 · 30/11/2024 10:31

I liked their first couple of albums, then lost interest. I don't hate them, but they're not a patch on the Housemartins who are one of my favourite bands in the world.

Sunshineandrainbow · 30/11/2024 10:31

Thanks for the reminder OP, love the music but not listened for a while as no longer have a cd player since my car was changed :(
I am going to find on you tube later and wrap some presents,

Lennon, on the other hand.
'Imagine' is an atrocity.
'Double Fantasy' was poorly reviewed until Mark Chapman stepped in, then all of a sudden Lennon was hailed as a genius, instead of a self-confessed wife-beating smack head.

Fair

Haha. Sense of humour breakdown here?

Au contraire. This post displays some fine humour, although maybe not as big a belly laugh as your one that said Genesis are the best band on the planet.

Doesn't happen so much now does it?
I remember Spandau Ballet or Duran Duran (you couldn't like both, and I didn't like either) and long nights at teen parties arguing why The Cure were better than The Smiths (still a hill...).
And this is before that awful 1995 Blur/Oasis nonsense.

And @JustMeAndTheFish 'The Lamb...' is one of my favourite ever records, but after Peter left they just weren't the same.

So true. When I was in the sixth form it was either Steely Dan or the Doobies, pre that it was either Donny or David. I was SD and David 😁
The Lamb is my favourite Genesis too and I agree re Peter. TBH I listen up to and including And Then There Were Three but nothing after that. I’ve seen them many times, the final one in the last tour in 2021. Thankfully it was all old stuff.

FartfulCodger · 30/11/2024 11:59

Song for Whoever is one of my favourite songs of all time. I also love their version of Everybody’s Talkin. But I hate their big hits - Rotterdam, Don’t marry her, Perfect 10.

Eminybob · 30/11/2024 20:28

I didn't realise The Beautiful South were so marmite, but definitely a lot of strong opinions on both sides on this thread!

Matsukaze · 30/11/2024 21:02

Thank you for this post - it's prompted me to give Blue is The Colour another listen 🎶 I saw them in '97, they were supported by Cast and The Lightning Seeds - a fab gig

RuudVanWrinkleBreath · 01/12/2024 13:10

My friend saw Paul in Leeds last night and he was "spot on" she says. Played a few Housemartins tunes too

That’s one of my favourite albums! Probably my favourite Beautiful South album. Great choice.

PeachyPeachTrees · 02/12/2024 15:14

Definitely agree with the marmite comments. I'm in team hate BTW.

Mrspostitnote · 02/12/2024 15:49

I was at Leeds too then Brighton on Tuesday. Rianne brings a whole new freshness and energy to the set and everyone seemed to think the same. Both times the atmosphere was electric.
