were...bloody amazing!?

AIBU to think this band might be the most underrated band in the UK...EVER!?

I have just blasted out their greatest hits whilst wrapping presents and had a nostalgic sing-along. So many wonderfully written songs, great singers too. Criminally underrated in my opinion.

AIBU?

What song is about domestic violence? Song For Whoever isn't

Edit, sorry, I made a mistake, I thought you keep it all in was their first single, turns out it was song for whoever.

In fairness, it was a long time ago.

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/11/2024 12:33

I absolutely hate them. They're one of my pet hates. I found the lyrics twee and the vocals unbearable.

There's very little music I really dislike but they are like nails on a blackboard.

CorbyTrouserPress · 29/11/2024 12:48

’Should’ve kept my eyes shut’ was about domestic violence.

….My father stands with rope in hand
A screaming mother kneels in hope
And she hope and we hope
That the words that she said won't provoke
A smile is removed and a petal is crushed
What once was a laugh has turned into a joke
You should've kept your mouth shut….

So twee

Loved them too ! My DP had a chat at work with Norman Cook on Tuesday, he said he was absolutely lovely. Very happy to talk about the football team they both support, gigs of his we've been too, the weather........

Hillarious · 29/11/2024 16:22

Some people just don't get The Beautiful South or Paul Heaton, and that's fine. Their loss, but absolutely fine.

Eminybob · 29/11/2024 16:30

Love love love them.
Carry on up the charts is often on in this house. I know every word of every song.

WooleyMunky · 29/11/2024 17:02

Youtube 'Caravan of Love' by The Housemartins on The Tube.

I know it is pre Beautiful South, but it is still very impressive. Heaton has always had a great voice.
And I had a massive crush on him in the 80s...🙄

I always think his voice sounds like he's struggling to swallow a hard-boiled egg. I also hated the voice of the woman who sang with them.

Caravan of Love is actually beautiful. Housemartins fine. Beautiful South big cringe for me.

Which one?

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/11/2024 17:54

@CorbyTrouserPress

Which woman? The one who sang on A Little Time. Don’t know her name. I can’t put my finger on why I dislike her as it’s obviously a technically good voice I just find it really grating.

I find everything they did really insipid and twee.

Primmyhill · 29/11/2024 17:59

Sorry, I think they’re shit.

Bundtbake · 29/11/2024 18:28

@ObieJoyful I agree!
Saw them in Manchester, really bad attitude.

Me too. I think it's the melodies which makes them seem so twee - very simplistic repetitive up-and-down-the-scale tunes which feel like the equivalent of listening to "The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round" on endless loop. Just dull.

"Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" sounds like Beethoven next to them!

And whoever said Lennon and McCartney couldn't write better needs to wash their mouth with soap!

Yes and sort of knowingly wink wink faux innocent in a way I found really laboured and naff. Can’t bear them.

Randomer68 · 29/11/2024 18:50

Love them! Really reminds me of being in my 20s and happy times. Loved Housemartins too.

randomchap · 28/11/2024 14:42

Twee lyrics? Are you getting confused with another band?

I know!

One that springs to mind:

He was very rarely drunk but
very rarely sober
And he didn’t think the problem was his drink
He only knew his problem
when he knocked her over
And when the rotting flesh began to stink.

Yeah, too twee!

FeetLikeFlippers · 29/11/2024 19:07

Thought this was going to be how over-rated they are! They are one of my all-time pet hates when it comes to music, I can’t stand Paul Heaton’s voice and I find their lyrics really cheesy.

Brianna Corrigan.
Left the group over misogyny in some of the lyrical content.

Ah yes I remember her now. She did have a technically great voice and I think in another band it could have worked really well.

There was just something about them: the lyrics, the vocals (particularly Heaton) which was so childish and syrupy. It just set off my gag reflex.

They're one of only two bands whose music annoys me so much I have to turn it off or leave the room. The other being Supertramp. Vom.

cgwmtl · 29/11/2024 19:16

I love them, have most of their albums and have them on in the car a lot of the time.

ChessorBuckaroo · 28/11/2024 16:34

I've known that song all these years (can remember hearing it in shops (Woolworths near the pick n mix section sticks in my memory) when it came out when I was 10 without focusing so much on all the lyrics) and didn't know about that little twist..just checked the lyrics. Very clever.

See, I think the twist is incredibly obvious and you can see it coming from space 🤷‍♀️

Vgbeat · 29/11/2024 19:39

Love, live, love the Beautiful South, always special to me as they were my late dads favourite band. Saw Paul Heaton a couple of years ago and he was brilliant and a lovely guy

Serp12 · 29/11/2024 19:40

You are not wrong! They are amazing!

Sorrynotsorry22 · 29/11/2024 19:42

Was always told, if you can't say something nice, then don't say anything !.

Jack80 · 29/11/2024 19:48

They are a great band
