To think The Beautiful South...

were...bloody amazing!?

AIBU to think this band might be the most underrated band in the UK...EVER!?

I have just blasted out their greatest hits whilst wrapping presents and had a nostalgic sing-along. So many wonderfully written songs, great singers too. Criminally underrated in my opinion.

Paul Heaton is a legend of the pop world
I do love him ,

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 28/11/2024 17:55

I'd be interested to know if there's much of a north/South divide in whether people like them or not

Am Irish (though live in the SE of England, if that makes a difference) and love them. When Bob Mortimer becomes Prime Minister, he should definitely give Paul Heaton a cabinet job...

Preferred Brianna's voice to Jacqui's, and also loved The Housemartins.

Dita73 · 28/11/2024 17:55

N. They’re absolutely horrendous

Piggywaspushed · 28/11/2024 17:56

I am not going to forgive this thread if I can't sleep tonight because of earworms.

the80sweregreat · 28/11/2024 17:58

Their lyrics are so clever and thoughtful
About real life, love life and divorce !

Gosh, Song For Whoever is anything but twee

Oh ok then, 😂that's what I meant by 'taking the lyrics at face value'.

...it is sung from the point of view of a cynical songwriter who romances women solely to get material for love songs...

Definitely not the definition of twee.

the80sweregreat · 28/11/2024 17:59

'Happy hour ' by the Housemartins brings back so many memories. Such a happy feel good song and Fat boy slim on there too

DanielaDressen · 28/11/2024 17:59

Love them. And the HouseMartins before. The first female singer with the Beautiful South had an amazing voice.

I also like 10000 Maniacs, REM and Martin Stephenson and the Daintees, whilst we are reminiscing.

I had all these on DVDs in a car I wrote off and lost them .

I really need to start listening to some of the old bands/singers who I loved back in the 90s.

REM were awesome
Old U2 stuff
Radiohead
The Black Crowes

I'm going to make myself a Spotify list!

Shityshitybangbang · 28/11/2024 18:06

Reminds me of my early 20s. I loved their music. Wasn’t keen on the song perfect 10 though. Just didn’t like the tune

alterego2 · 28/11/2024 18:06

Thank you for starting this @RuudVanWrinkleBreath - I now have Beautiful South playing loudly while I cook dinner. And I wouldn't have remembered without your thread!

Yeah her voice is exquisite & she's very good in the A Little Time video

FussyPud · 28/11/2024 18:09

Forgot to mention, am Northern.

the80sweregreat · 28/11/2024 18:10

Paul Heaton did a great set at Glastonbury one year

TellerTuesday · 28/11/2024 18:12

Love them, think I wore my carry on up the charts cd out in my early 20s. Haven't actually listened to them for a while, time for a blast for a hit of nostalgia.

Old Red eyes is back was my ultimate favourite.

Love Paul Heaton and he seems a very down to earth guy. He often puts money behind bars in a number pubs near the venues he's playing.

Lonelycrab · 28/11/2024 18:14

Never did particularly float my boat but each to their own.

the80sweregreat · 28/11/2024 18:15

Don't marry her , have me !
I do feel sorry for the girl in that song. She knows he won't.

LlynTegid · 28/11/2024 18:21

Lovely man Paul Heaton who I met about 15 years ago, wonderful songwriter, throughout his career.

RunningOutOfImaginitiveUsernames · 28/11/2024 18:25

StaunchMomma · 28/11/2024 17:44

The music is twee, though.

I find their sound just so annoying and 'nice', even if they tried to be edgy with lyrics.

I can appreciate that. I do tend to get caught up on lyrics personally!

cheesychipsontheoche · 28/11/2024 18:27

Have seen Paul Heaton many a time, and the Beautiful South before that. Was a bit young for the Housemartins sadly.

I absolutely adore him.

Have also seen Brianna live recently, her voice is still angelic, Jacqui is also very lovely and missed, and I've become a great fan of Rianne, her solo stuff is great.

There's nothing twee about Heatongrad.

Even Happy Hour is about dickheads you have to socialise with despite seeming an upbeat tune.

I agree with a PP who mentioned Let Love Speak Up Itself. Incredible live.

the80sweregreat · 28/11/2024 18:30

It's happy hour again and again and again
It's happy hour again !!
😃

faffadoodledo · 28/11/2024 18:30

Song for Whover is absolutely not twee. The tune is deliberately so, but not the lyrics. That's the clever thing

CorbyTrouserPress · 28/11/2024 18:30

One of my favourite Heaton songs is ‘10 lessons in love’ from his Biscuitboy AKA Crakerman era. Love the ‘Fat Chance’ album.

NewName24 · 28/11/2024 18:33

Fab last hour listening to them on Spotify. Thanks @RuudVanWrinkleBreath

Marshtit · 28/11/2024 18:42
