To think The Beautiful South...

were...bloody amazing!?

AIBU to think this band might be the most underrated band in the UK...EVER!?

I have just blasted out their greatest hits whilst wrapping presents and had a nostalgic sing-along. So many wonderfully written songs, great singers too. Criminally underrated in my opinion.

Also, and maybe it's because I listen to a lot of indie, rock and stuff like Tom Waites and Leonard Cohen, but I really don't think BS's lyrics are all THAT clever. If anything, I think Paul Heaton thinks he's a lot cleverer than he is. A cut above a.lot of pop music though I suppose.

Ewww I've read that back and I sound like a horrible snob! Sorry 😖

Itsallsostressful · 28/11/2024 19:36

Oh I'm gonna go down a BS/Housemartins rabbit hole now I can feel it !

Bellbottom tears 😢

jajhgyt · 28/11/2024 19:40

Going to see Paul Heaton next month

And since Deacon Blue have had a few mentions, I bought tickets this morning to see them next year

stonkytonk11 · 28/11/2024 19:49

Just listened to Prettiest Eyes, brilliant song I'd forgotten about. Don't marry her too 👌

Sunblocker · 28/11/2024 19:59

Wonderful band and definitely underated. Paul Heaton’s voice is sublime; his Glastonbury set made me cry, so many memories!

Heaton is an incredible songwriter. Had some great tunes with the Housemartins too. It's a real shame that Jacqui Abbott's health has stopped her from touring with him in recent years.

Whereas others could say its a blessing in diguise😬

Great on record- lousy in concert.

The only gig I’ve ever walked out of. He basically told the crowd that they were hungover and couldn’t be arsed. It showed!

I've only seen them once , MANY yrs ago !
Support act The lightning Seeds.

I LOVED them, everything about it. Only concert I've been to where they drank pints and smoked on stage (can see it would be crap if they became too drunk or hungover!)
Still listen to them now (and the Housemartins)

Prettiest Eyes was one of the songs I had in mind when referencing his love songs. It's about what love looks like in a lifelong relationship.

NineDaysQueen · 28/11/2024 20:11

Loved them as The Housemartins (with Fat Boy Slim when he was still Norman), and as The BS even more

CountTo10 · 28/11/2024 21:10

Huge PS fan. I'm seeing him twice next week (long story) and twice next year. 'Happy Hour' was the soundtrack of my life in the mid 89's. I've told my sons I want it played at my funeral 😂 Although Caravan if Love may be more acceptable tempo wise 😂 He's absolutely brilliant live. I've seen him every time he tours.

Interestingly saw him in the Beautiful South and was really disappointed. No atmosphere but I re Bre telling some I may as well have stayed home with a good sound system. The songs were good but they just didn't seem bothered. They were drinking pints on stage and just didn't seem interested. Totally different now but I think Paul accepts he had a drink problem which seems to have been addressed and he no longer drinks on stage.

A musical genius in my opinion and secretly hoping Norman makes an appearance at Brighton next week like he did at Glastonbury.

I have the same reaction to Robbie Williams too! Same weird vocal timbre 🤢

He's bloody awful, can't bear his voice

HRTQueen · 28/11/2024 21:24

No I find their song writing simple and music tedious

only songs I have liked have been covers

Deacon Blue are as brilliant as ever in concert

BurntBroccoli · 28/11/2024 22:29

Not keen on them - I think Paul Heaton's voice is a bit nasally and it gets on my nerves.
Seems a bit full of himself too.

Beautiful south and Texas. Both bands I always enjoy when stumbling across them, yet rarely seek them out.
They are great

I find Texas sooo boring!
But each to their own I guess.

For those who like both Beautiful South and Housemartins, there's a really good tribute band touring called The SouthMartins. I've been to see them and they're excellent.

Yes, seen them four times, I think. Joyous.

They’re not my type of music so only ever heard a couple of their songs. The one with all the girls names is probably up there in my list of songs I’d rather cut my ears off than hear again tbh

nooo I love that song and there was a mumsnetter (still is?) with the username ‘JenniferAlisonPhillippaSue’ which always made me smile when I saw it.

BurntBroccoli · 28/11/2024 22:48

I'm from the North and not keen on them. Wouldn't say hate - I just don't like his voice.

dawnc27 · 28/11/2024 22:50

love them, 2 of my favs are woman in the wall and should have kept my eyes shut. im not sure if i should be proud or ashamed that those 2 were also the ones my kids aged around 7 would sing along to most!

Luddite26 · 29/11/2024 06:28

I had turned my back on the Beautiful South back in 1997 after they had been one of my favourites for a few years. Husband at the time was a fan and when we divorced I really hated them because they reminded me of him so much.
When I watched Paul Heaton's Glastonbury set on TV in the summer, it was like a hand hold taking me to revisit the long lost early 90s.I felt like ex husband had took them in the divorce along with so many of my belongings and watching that set gave me chance to claim them back.

Nolongera · 29/11/2024 09:34

The number of people who think Song for Whoever is a lovely song about girls names, I know someone named from the song who thought that.

Sorry Phillipa.

Bit like people who think the Police's " Every breath you take" is a love song.

If you like their version of Caravan of love, have a listen to the Isely brothers original version, like 2 different songs.

Any band that starts out with a song about domestic violence isn't going for the easy sell.

What song is about domestic violence? Song For Whoever isn't

EvilsElsasPetSnowman · 29/11/2024 10:24

Song for whoever is about people who use muses to make good songs

NerrSnerr · 29/11/2024 11:16

You keep it all in was about domestic violence 'husband getting ready to right, daughter sleeps the moment the light turns on she hears'.

RuudVanWrinkleBreath · 29/11/2024 11:40
