Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

I've literally never heard of chicken balls 🤣

Not the point of the thread but I am agog that someone has never heard of chicken balls

Onthesideofthespiders · 27/11/2024 10:46

Had those kids eaten the octopus if they had only just grabbed them when one dad noticed?
Did he hand you the uneaten octopus plates? Because he could have just put them back on the belt. Or did he hand you the stack of half eaten sushi those kids had been collecting the whole time you were there?

Yalta · 27/11/2024 10:47

I’m confused that people are confused at what happened.

Expensive game these children were playing

yukikata · 27/11/2024 10:48

No, why on earth would you pay?

What you did was a bit immature as you should have just told the parents that their kids were being silly, but ultimately, they should have been supervising their children.

It's not your job to pay for that.

Who leaves a table of kids alone to choose what they want from a sushi train anyway?

That’s what I was wondering.

I suppose if you knew what was going on oP, he might have thought you should have alerted him to it rather than inflaming it, albeit that he should have been supervising.

AnonymousBleep · 27/11/2024 10:49

It's a bit of a shame that the restaurant lost out because it sounds like nobody ended up paying for the octopus balls - but that's not your fault, OP. The brats clearly are the way they are because of their rude, entitled parents.

NineDaysQueen · 27/11/2024 07:43

The serious police have arrived
No ball quips allowed

WAY too late for that! 😂

CowTown · 27/11/2024 10:50

I’m confused about why these parents were so stupid to have separate adult/kids tables at a self-service sushi restaurant, and to natter away with the adults, leaving the kids to their own devices.

Sure, it would have been nice for OP to alert them, but it's not her responsibility.

It's his own fault for not supervising his bratty kids and leaving them to grab whatever they want.

If that was the case, he could have handled it more politely than dumping the stuff HIS KIDS had ordered onto the OP's table. He was as rude and entitled as his brattish kids. Apple not falling far from the tree etc. Bet he wouldn't have done that if she was a bloke, either.

CowTown · 27/11/2024 10:54

Oh come on, if OP would have “gently” let him know that his kids were deliberately taking what they wanted, he 100% isn’t the type of bloke to listen, take it on board, and discipline his kids.

NewDaye · 27/11/2024 10:56

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 10:38

They looked over at the kids table as I possibly a little too loudly said I wanted octopus balls and saw the kids taking it. Then saw all the plates on the table. He said I’m not paying that and dumped it all on our table.

I really don’t understand this. He dumped their half eaten food on your table, just because you said you wanted it? Like surely he understands that you’re not liable to pay regardless of you shouting out you wanted it. He had no leg to stand on regardless of you possibly “goading” his children. He should have been supervising them. If you said you wanted to drink drain cleaner, would they have done that too? All roads lead back to horrendous parenting.

HappyFitnessQueen · 27/11/2024 10:56

This is amazing - 100% you won! You genius :D
And no, you shouldn't have paid and it's all on the parent and their children. Hopefully, a lesson learnt...although I doubt it as he obviously wasn't assuming any responsibility.

oakleaffy · 27/11/2024 10:57

It sounds hellish.
Shouting kids and raw fish
The parasites caught from raw fish are horrid-
Tapeworm especially.

Cooking it at least kills the encysted worms.

mysadoldarse · 27/11/2024 10:59

@Cwazycupcake I think I would have done exactly the same as you!!!
Did he just plonk the octopus on your table or try and dump other stuff too? Whatever he did, it's entirely his fault and I really hope that the restaurant made him pay.

Out of interest, how old were the annoying kids?

Jaq27 · 27/11/2024 11:00

Damnloginpopup · 27/11/2024 07:41

Actually, I have now googled about octopi testicles. Quite fascinating.

Octopussy less so.

Oh wow. I literally just went down the octopus rabbit hole ...

Give over, do you think most of Japan is walking around with tapeworm?

With the exception of some farmed species, the law requires that fish served as sushi or sashimi has to have been flash-frozen for this very reason.

NewDaye · 27/11/2024 11:01

Also how does payment work at the sushi place, like would they have been able to leave without making payment?

evtheria · 27/11/2024 11:02

Yanbu - the fact he clocked the expensive plate and expected you to pay for it meant he was fully aware of what their kids had been doing until then.

Ohthedaffodils · 27/11/2024 11:03

I think what you did was genius OP.

Most places I've been will come round and quickly tally up how many you've had of each colour of plates, as you should have a small (or large) stack on your table. EG 4 blue, 3 yellow etc. and that's your bill.
Then some are bill at table and some are go pay at the counter, like other restaurants.

Mad. The correct response here is to say "why is it my responsibility, I have no idea what you're talking about".

Thousands are diagnosed annually in Japan with parasites from raw fish.
Fish carry parasites- much safer cooked.

Noshowlomo · 27/11/2024 11:13

Nah, genius. What little shits! I hope you enjoy what you did have
