Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

OP was at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant like Yo Sushi. You take your chosen plates from the belt and pay for what you have eaten. They are colour coded to correspond to the prices.

The obnoxious children at the next table were closer to the entry point of the food. They listened to OP’s children saying what they wanted and deliberately took it off the belt before it reached OP and family. Irritated by this, OP loudly said that she wanted one of the most expensive dishes on the menu. The obnoxious children duly took it and their parents only noticed once their children’s behaviour got expensive.

YANBU and the other adults should have supervised their children.

This. Yanbu, obviously, OP.

chollysawcutt · 27/11/2024 09:47

There are many many posts on here where the OP gives a scenario in which someone has behaved very obviously unreasonably ('my friend owes me 50 quid but laughed when I asked her for it'.... 'I offered a friend a lift and she said, no way, you are smelly'....'my friend asked me to dogsit her 10 puppies for a week for free while she goes on holiday...') and then asks, faux naively, 'AIBU? Is this OK?

To which the answer is always, no obviously it is not OK and YANBU.

This post gets to that question in the end, but the journey to it is probably the most original and circuitous I have seen recently. So for that, OP, I commend you and award you a well-deserved YANBU.

Not being unreasonable at all OP. If parents were stupid enough to give kids free access to the sushi train that's their problem

Totally bemused why they thought you should pay

Rosscameasdoody · 27/11/2024 10:01

Sethera · 27/11/2024 07:40

So you asked for Octopus balls but the children at the other table took them, not you?

Yep, l think that’s the gist of it - either that or it was what made the other parents realise what their kids had been doing, and how expensive and wasteful it was. And with predictable entitlement tried to get OP to pay !!

pictoosh · 27/11/2024 10:06

This is brilliant - ha! YANBU.

They brought that on themselves.

Absolutely this!

Who the hell gives kids free reign in a sushi place?!

purplecorkheart · 27/11/2024 10:13

No, you should not have paid for their children. The parents should have been supervising their children. It is a costly mistake for them. If they were supervising their kids there would be no need for you to say anything. I wonder were the parents actually talking to each other or were on their phones.

sheldonRockz · 27/11/2024 10:14

FAAFO at its finest. Well done OP, I love it 🤣

Vax · 27/11/2024 10:15

Why would they expect you to pay?

BobbyBiscuits · 27/11/2024 10:17

A strange man dumped a load of half eaten plates on your table and demanded that you pay for them? I'd have gone fucking ape shit. Who does that? Once the plate is touched by a customer, that's the customers who's paying. (Or their parents). Completely batshit! Your kids weren't telling the other kids to take the food they wanted. Quite the opposite.
Yeah, you did the right thing. I would have been absolutely seething with that man.
I've never seen this happen before in a sushi place, but I always thought there was ample leeway for things to go wrong where kids and moving food are concerned!

How surprising that the parents “didn’t notice” what their children were doing until it got expensive for them.
Could OP have alerted the parents to the situation before doing this -sure, but we can imagine the response she’d have got considering the CF reaction to the octopus balls.

YANBU OP. I feel you handled it brilliantly and hopefully these parents will keep a closer eye on their kids next time.

Just googled sushi train. Sounds incredibly unhygienic! Your food passes by loads of other people who could have coughed or sneezed or touched it. Eww.

It’s under little plastic domes.

NineDaysQueen · 27/11/2024 07:40

Well, this post has foxed me.
A sushi train? Wtf is that? Does it travel, or in a siding?
Your kids were shouting for their food rather than asking politely?
I have no idea what you are talking about

Why bother posting then? Maybe spend your time getting out more if a sushi train confuses you so much. People are so weird on here.

YWNBU OP.

CombatLingerie · 27/11/2024 10:20

Ah say I stroking my chin thoughtfully. Am I in need of a new user name? Not sure but ‘Sushi Restaurant Drama’ would be a strong contender.

Pancakeflipper · 27/11/2024 10:21

I think your request for expensive dishes was brilliant.

And the parents shouldn't go to you but take it out of the pocket monies of the -painintheneck children.

needsomewarmsunshine · 27/11/2024 10:22

OP's friends who say she should have paid sound like wet lettuces and trying to avoid a scene. Good for you OP, only paying for food you and your family had eaten.

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 10:24

Thanks all. My friend felt I should pay as I had goaded the kids into grabbing four expensive plates of food they wouldn’t eat.

I do promise to be more adventurous next time I get sushi.

JimPanzee · 27/11/2024 07:42

I can't figure out if you ate the octopus or not?

Also I doubt the parents didn't realise until then, they simply didn't care until the kids picked the most expensive items just to waste them.

Precisely. Their parents should have supervised their children.

lightsandtunnels · 27/11/2024 10:26

YA definitely NBU!
100% the blame falls at the parents of the kids for not supervising them. The father who said you should pay for them is a CF of the highest order. The kids sound like perfect products of parents who don't give too much of a shit and let the kids call the shots.
Your friend is also BU for saying you were goading them and saying you should have paid. Not your kids. Not your responsibility.

YWNBU OP.

I posted thinking someone may be kind enough to explain this concept to me (which they did), not for nasty and sarcastic comments.
But if it makes you feel better to tell me to get out more, then bless you - glad to have helped.
BTW, sushi, along with any meal fish-based, is the food of the devil.

No, you absolutely should not pay in this kind of situation.

The children took the plate, their parents did not supervise them (or care about their children being rude). You therefore should not pay.

AnonymousBleep · 27/11/2024 10:27

Haha, genius, OP! And of course you shouldn't have paid for it, those parents should have been supervising their brats.

Newgreensofa · 27/11/2024 10:27

My only experience of sushi trains is the scene in Miranda 😅but I’d say hats off you you, this could be out of Motherland!

Birdseyetrifle · 27/11/2024 10:28

Did the other family pay though?
I think you were 100% in the right.
