To break with hair stylist over politics?

Please try to be kind, because as silly as this sounds I am very upset about this situation.

I am currently in the US and I have been going to the same woman who does my hair for 25 years. Over the years we have become friends but do not really see each other socially (occasionally talk on the phone, text, cook a meal when someone sick). We seem to have made this unspoken agreement that we would not discuss politics both knowing we are on opposite ends of the spectrum in our beliefs. The US has recently had a presidential election and the person elected is a VERY polarizing character. This is the person my hairstylist supports.

I had my hair done last night and it appears that since the election results our silent pact not to discuss politics has expired. She really wanted to talk about how much better the country will be and how smart the president elect is. I asked her to stop and that I didn't think we should discuss it but she kept on and then I went at her both barrels. we played the "well, what about THIS" game for a while each trying to outwit the other to prove our point. We were able to pull ourselves out of a terrible spiral and the last 1/2 hour of the appointment was fine. I hugged her goodbye which I normally don't do and I realized that was because I think that may be the last time I see her. I don't think I can go back. I still enjoy her as a friend but her support for this megalomaniac makes me think less of her. If this is the end do I call her and tell her why or just cancel my next appointment and just move on?

I go to the hairdresser, weirdly enough, to get my hair cut.

laughing at the kids with socks & sliders is a side benefit!!

@momtoboys

is it really worth losing someone who you've been 'sort of' friends with for 25 years?

I'd just text & say, look you know our political views don't align, over the past 25 years we've become friends by keeping our political views out of it. My last appointment was very uncomfortable so can we please go back to keeping our political views out of our friendship & my appointments because I'd hate to fall out with you!

give it one more go & if she does it again, then just book your next appointment elsewhere and let it go or let her do the running.

I think texting her is the right course of action.
For what it's worth my hairdresser voted for Brexit and even though I disagreed with her I carried on going. In fact I like to sit there with a smug look on my face when the topic comes up now.
Be very clear that you will not be returning if she behaves in that way again.

CranfordScones · 22/11/2024 18:55

'Your' side ran a terrible campaign which couldn't make a better case for being elected. They should be the target of your anger.

Statistically your hairdresser is in the majority.

Love the couple of lines where you explain the US has had a presidential election and your description of the person elected.

Do you think we live on Mars on MN. 😂😂😂

This. We all know who trump is 😆

If OP had said that her hairdresser is an evangelical Christian who won’t stop talking about her beliefs, the responses would have been VERY different. Who goes to the hairdresser to be harangued and made to feel uncomfortable? Who wants to go through that and then have to pay for the experience, especially when time at the hairdresser may be one of few opportunities for relaxation for some people? Some of you really need to engage your brains and stop being so reflexly tribal.

Absolutely.
The cultlike adoration of the president elect by people like this would absolutely put me off ever being in the position of having to sit there and listen to it.

rayofsunshine86 · 22/11/2024 19:02

As long as she doesn't do your hair like Trump, what's the problem?

FixingStuff · 22/11/2024 19:06

I understand your feelings OP. If it was hitler in the 30s you would be quite right to make a stand. I don't know what trump is going to do, but I think it's reasonable to be concerned.

😂😂😂oh please. I cannot stand Trump and i have concerns about what he will do but Hitler?! Really?! You know he was president before right?

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 22/11/2024 19:09

The US has recently had a presidential election and the person elected is a VERY polarizing character I will never understand why people use Chat GPT to write their posts. It’s so tedious because they don’t bother to read them back and clearly don’t even realise how stupid they sound telling people that there’s recently been an election in America.

So all I can say is

PMSL.

Yab totally u and narrow minded. . Are suggesting this woman shouldn't have a voice because she doesn't agree with you. Or she should lose business because of her views. I think that's totally shameful. Sorry.

HawkersSouth · 22/11/2024 19:13

YABU. I'm also in the US, I know a lot of people who voted for Trump for various reasons. Everyone is welcome to their opinion, it's things like this that is contributing to the huge divide in the US. 'Oh I can't be friends with anyone who voted the other side'. Let's be honest life hasn't been all roses under Biden.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 22/11/2024 19:16

But @HawkersSouth - the problem isn’t that the hairdresser voted for Trump - the OP knew this before she walked through the door. The problem was the hairdresser wanted to go on about how amazing it was, knowing her client didn’t vote for him and then when the client asked her to change the subject, refused.

the hairdresser has blurred the lines between client and friend. She’s forgotten that first and foremost, the OP is paying for a service.

Blinky21 · 22/11/2024 19:20

Not unreasonable at all, I've done the same in the past, life's too short to put up with people whose views offend you

@FancyBiscuitsLevel, well it kinda is the problem, the OP also said this..

but her support for this megalomaniac makes me think less of her.

Those two outcomes seem to be quite a massive leap from the starting point!

bloodynaps · 22/11/2024 19:41

No I wouldn't break my custom with someone over their political opinion.

Verv · 22/11/2024 17:27

I accidentally hit YANBU when i meant YABU.

Good hairdressers are hard to find, and you pay for the cut, not to have their political belief match yours.

Ditto, I accidently clicked YANBU too
NEVER GET INTO POLITICAL CONVERSATIONS

RaspberryBeretxx · 22/11/2024 19:45

I wouldn’t pay to have someone spout Trump politics at me. I’d stop using her services, nothing is worth that shit.

CatalinaLoo · 22/11/2024 19:47

YANBU. Don’t overthink it. She’s either a right wing dick or an idiot. Either way - bin her.

Happyher · 22/11/2024 19:53

I would just move on. You will never feel the same about her. I have friends who’s politics differ from mine but we generally don’t get too political in our conversations. But if one became extreme and I felt offended by their views I would reduce or cut contact.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 22/11/2024 19:55

HawkersSouth · 22/11/2024 19:35

Well yes, given who Trump is and what he stands for, then it’s pretty reasonable to think less of someone when you find out they hold those views/consider them acceptable.

That wasn’t enough for her to stop wanting to go though- it was the refusal to stop talking about it and going on about it when the OP had been clear she didn’t want a debate/discussion.

going to have your hair done should be a lovely experience. This hair dresser/stylist can’t or won’t provide that.

artant · 22/11/2024 19:56

I enjoy a good political argument but over a drink not at the hairdresser’s. I want my hair stylist to concentrate on cutting my hair rather than treating me as a captive audience to their political pontificating.

No need to make a big thing of leaving her, just find another stylist.

Kwiaenrker · 22/11/2024 19:56

Oh please..you jest surely?

timenowplease · 22/11/2024 20:01

You don't believe in democracy and free speech OP and that's fine but you will have to accept that it's YOU who will be making your own life very difficult, not who got voted in.

RingoJuice · 22/11/2024 20:03

I voted for Trump lol but I really don’t care if someone voted for Harris (I’d just think they were naive). All you need to do is say you prefer not to discuss politics.

I believe in democracy and free speech 100% but would still go off a person if they loved Trump.
