To break with hair stylist over politics?

Please try to be kind, because as silly as this sounds I am very upset about this situation.

I am currently in the US and I have been going to the same woman who does my hair for 25 years. Over the years we have become friends but do not really see each other socially (occasionally talk on the phone, text, cook a meal when someone sick). We seem to have made this unspoken agreement that we would not discuss politics both knowing we are on opposite ends of the spectrum in our beliefs. The US has recently had a presidential election and the person elected is a VERY polarizing character. This is the person my hairstylist supports.

I had my hair done last night and it appears that since the election results our silent pact not to discuss politics has expired. She really wanted to talk about how much better the country will be and how smart the president elect is. I asked her to stop and that I didn't think we should discuss it but she kept on and then I went at her both barrels. we played the "well, what about THIS" game for a while each trying to outwit the other to prove our point. We were able to pull ourselves out of a terrible spiral and the last 1/2 hour of the appointment was fine. I hugged her goodbye which I normally don't do and I realized that was because I think that may be the last time I see her. I don't think I can go back. I still enjoy her as a friend but her support for this megalomaniac makes me think less of her. If this is the end do I call her and tell her why or just cancel my next appointment and just move on?

I was taught to believe that there are two things that should generally never be discussed in public.

Money and politics.

Unless you are a politician, or attending a political event/protest, then their is no reason to discuss politics with anyone but your closest friends/family.

And even then, if one person doesn't want to, it's not on to keep picking at it.

China, the nation state not built from a history of immigration? Doesn’t seem a like for like comparison tbh.

Han Chinese pushed west and south into non-Han territory, and you want to tell me it’s not comparable? How do you think China got so big? Did they just magically pop out of the soil?

I doubt you’d let England use a blood and soil argument like this tbh. Or maybe you would?

TankFlyBossW4lk · 26/11/2024 17:23

Honestly, I get you OP. I have developed a similar relationship with my staunch Tory hairdresser. But voting Tory isn't on the same level at Trump IMHO. Even now. (Tongue in cheek).

However, you need to get it straight, friend or your hairdresser? If hairdresser, I wouldn't be involved in the politics and keep going. If she's a friend, then it's a no from me I'm afraid.

Native Americans did not build America.

No, immigrants did.

Immigrants from where?

Immigrants from where?

Immigrants from everywhere. The point is that immigrants built America, the only thing racist white people ever did was complain about the hardworking immigrants doing the jobs they were too lazy or unskilled to do.

Look at you, trading in such lazy stereotypes, which is hilarious because you CAN’T even admit that white Europeans built America.

I don’t know why you can’t do it, but it’s very interesting how eager you are to literally erase my history and say oh they came from everywhere. They did not — America was 90% a white Christian country until maybe 40 years ago, and you can’t even bring yourself to acknowledge a literal fact.

Maybe try examining your biases and educating yourself (challenge impossible)

urbanbuddha · 27/11/2024 04:59

America calls itself a Christian country but it doesn’t understand the commandments.
Jesus said, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” He wasn’t talking about the white person that lives on your street.

This logic is why Western countries are in the mess they are in tbh.

You bring refugees to my hometown out of misguided Christian charity and don’t care at all about what happens next.

Are Christians really this simple-minded?

urbanbuddha · 27/11/2024 05:38

It’s not logic. It’s philosophy.

If the end result makes my town worse off, what exactly has been accomplished?

That you can feel good as a Christian, damn the consequences?

the UK is nation born from invasion, immigration and amalgamation. China is a country born of amalgamation and relocation. Other than the Native Americans the US is a country built only on immigration. Which is why the UK and US both have diverse multi cultural populations. Although the English Far Right (EFR) would argue there is a dominant ‘English’ culture, few in the UK would agree. Perhaps there is a culture difference between the UK and the US in that a WASP mindset is not the only mindset in the UK which would explain there being less racial tension in the UK.

America has NEVER been a Christian country, take a US history class before you start spouting your idiotic, racist nonsense.

China has a diverse, multicultural population by that very same definition.

Do they have the right to exist? Or must they too accept any poor migrants that show up on their borders?

And I would say ime there is more racial tension in the UK. We don’t have WWC people rioting in the streets — we just move away.

What do you think separation of Church and State means exactly? I think it is you that is misinformed tbh

I don’t know anything about my hairdresser’s political views and I intend to keep it that way. We have enjoyable chats about our kids, families, holidays, all non-contentious stuff. I don’t know what I’d do if it somehow turned out that she was a Trumpist. I wouldn’t be happy about it, but on the other hand she does a bloody good haircut.

Didn't really get the chance, did they?

ImAChangeling · 22/02/2025 16:38

How does the idea of cancelling make you feel in your gut? Are you feeling relieved? Guilty? Happy or sad? Only you can know how strong a relationship you have and whether there’s any hope to reach beyond your differences.

I stopped seeing a friend who was very vocally pro Brexit and it was a relief to no longer see her. She knew that it would damage my business and retirement plans, but still wouldn’t shut up.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 22/02/2025 19:51

@momtoboys now you’re had a couple of months, how do you feel about it? Now some of the policies are beginning to happen, do you think she’s still happy?
