I will start. Every year a certain family member gets me bath bombs. I cannot use them as i am alergic to them. I have suggested things i would prefer every year like chocolates or a good bottle of wine. This family member always fails to listen. I am fed up of pretending to be greatful.

I thought of another. I heard a song on the radio I really liked so I asked if I could get the CD for Christmas so I could listen in my car. I did not get the CD for Christmas. I got concert tickets to see the artist! Wow you might think, so generous? Unfortunately the concert tickets were put on our joint credit card and we were already struggling with a lot of debt. I never got the CD. I ended up solely making the repayments.

A punishment gift from my sister when I was 13 years old.

My crime? I bought my mother a bar of Chanel No5 soap and my mother mocked it and declared it to be a very stupid gift and a total waste of money, I got my money back and refused to buy her a replacement. My sister thought I was being unreasonable - she has bought me a beautiful leather rucksack and refused to give it to me unless I bought my mother a gift - she gave me a really awful writing set - I don't know why she bothered - took me a long time to forgive both of them. It's no wonder I hate gifting and Christmas.😂

A plastic jug that holds a bag of milk. It came free with the bag of milk if you got it delivered. Yes, someone actually gave me that. Unwrapped, just a shit piece of plastic. The next year it was a battery operated torch without the battery. Ex husband.

The year when my mother mixed up the presents. My uncle got the M&S socks meant for me - I got the pipe tobacco meant for him!

Needmorelego · 21/11/2024 16:22

Unless all these gift givers have dementia or something I really cannot fathom their thinking behind some of these gifts.
Completely baffles me.

Motnight · 21/11/2024 16:22

Black disposable paper thongs made by either Always or Bodyform.

A size 28 nightdress that was designed to be huge. I was a size 16 so by no means skinny but also not that big. My then primary school aged DD put it on her and I together to illustrate that it was too big.

A bulk lot of bic biros. Some of which were leaking (I actually refused these).

All given by the same relative over the years.

Musicaltheatremum · 21/11/2024 16:24

My "boyfriend" (he was 60 but only together 4 months at the time so not partner) bought me a standard lamp and a bird table for the first Christmas we were together. All good. Then I saw a little square package and was excited to open it....it was an IKEA clock/timer/thermometer all in one.......I was so disappointed! Thought it was jewellry He made up for it on valentine's day with lovely earrings and the clock came in very useful. We have been together 6 years married for 2.5 now so I forgave him.

To Mary
thanks for all your work this year
love your employer.

it was edible I did indeed query it with her at the time, it was pretty obvious.

A 1970s pyrex oven dish with a floral print on it and a glass lid, in a very dusty, crushed yellow box, which, when opened, revealed a crust of old overcooked casserole stuck around the inner rim. 😂

Gifted to me by a family member of my then boyfriend, because now we were together I needed cookware, as it was my job to feed him. I was 21. 😏

I haven’t had any hideous gifts but people are forever giving me scented candles which I can’t use use because of asthma or prosecco which I’m allergic to. I don’t get why these who know me well enough to give me gifts don’t remember this.

They just get given to the next raffle, and it seems such a waste.

@Notmoog

I’m with your MIL.

If you were ‘gifting’ her your Covid-I-refuse-to-test-family-germs, I’d be gifting you some masks right back.

she was happy enough to accept our hospitality in our germ ridden home and I really did not appreciate her basically saying he should be wearing the useless masks.
Silly woman

Precisely! Hope the poor MIL wasn’t vulnerable (on too of being, presumably, elderly).

love that you obviously still think testing was worthwhile. You're one of a dying breed!

A toiletry bag from an airline - i.e. as given out free to passengers. MIL has given me this lovely gift for several Christmases now. She flies a lot so always has a ready stock of them. She occasionally varies the excitement for me - so last year I got a handbag which had obviously been used by someone before as it wasn't very clean inside.

Perhaps this year I will get one of her other go-to Christmas presents for me: clothes that don't fit. They are always about a size 18-20, to show that she has thought about the fact that I'm overweight and can therefore legitimately introduce it as a topic of conversation in front of the assembled company. But that's not the right size and it's never something that I would be likely to wear.

Sorry, but I always test before I visit vulnerable grandparents if I suspect Covid.
I’m completely with your MIL.
Poor woman.
Merry Xmas, here’s some Covid for you.
Lovely. Nice to know there is so much care and thought going into your family Xmas.

Some padded hangers from my ILs. Thanks just what I wanted 😂

Framed photos of my big old face. Lovely.

One of my favourite threads (OP is the one that I mean) and from a lovely, genuinely kind relative from the sound of it:

I am 40 years old, I live with my DS who is 9. And this year my aunt has gone onto my Facebook, specifically my profile pictures and for Christmas I got the following....

  1. A full length canvas print of me posing in a dress.
  2. A mug with my face on.
  3. A travel mug with my face on.
  4. not one, BUT TWO cushions each of a close up OF MY FACE.
  5. A FULL CALENDER EACH MONTH WITH A DIFFERENT PICTURE OF MY OWN FACE!
Now, who, IN THEIR RIGHT MIND HAS THEIR OWN FACE ON CUSHIONS! IMAGINE WHAT VISITORS WOULD THINK!

An ashtray from a visiting aunt. None of us has ever smoked.

Timble · 21/11/2024 16:39

a lush gift set from family in my dh’s side. Only annoyed because it was the one I gave her the previous Christmas. (I know it was the same one as lush put money off coupons inside the boxes and they were many months out of date!

Member984815 · 21/11/2024 16:39

2 from same person , first one a Christmas vas clearly pulled from the back of a press full of thick dust inside and out.ive no problem with secondhand gifts ,Last year it was a man's gift set. It's done deliberately to let me know how they feel . We don't speak have no idea why they keep sending these gifts so last Christmas after receiving the man's set I opened the lovely Yankee candle I got them and lit it .life's too short not bothering this year .

This thread is the only thing getting me to the end of the day right now. Mine was basic black laptop bag with my name printed on the side in capital letters from my parents. I felt so bad because they were really excited to give it to me.
