To ask nursery not to let my child play outside when it’s dark out

Singlema99 · 19/11/2024 23:02

I collect my child from nursery at about 5pm, often children are playing outside however this time of year it’s almost black outside from 4pm and at home my child knows he can’t play in the garden after dark the same way I wouldn’t take him to the park in the dark.

would it be unreasonable to ask the nursery to keep him in from 4pm

mainly because the message is confusing but also often he’s not adequately dressed to be outside not wearing gloves and hat and has been happy but freezing several times picking him up.

Well @notacooldad it won't be 'black' Will it?? No...it will be lit, there's lights....nursery aren't letting kids out in complete darkness that's why it's bloody 'weird'...ok??

nam3c4ang3 · 20/11/2024 11:34

This is your fist child, isn't it OP 😂 - the dark is not going to hurt him, nyctophobia in the long run will tho.... Maybe just tell the nursery to dress him appropriately but honestly, my two used to not care....

Dreammalildream · 20/11/2024 11:46

What do you think will happen if he's playing out in the dark, in a safe place with caring adults?

😆, blimey, don't get your knicks in a twist with your double question marks and anwering your own qustions! Reading your post (*Op said 'when it's black outside'....black!! What does that even mean?? Bloody weird)it sounded like you didnt know the expression 'it's black outside', thats what made me scratch my head and think what on earth are you talking about.

I think OP has failed to mention that the nursery doesn't have a playground... instead they're dropping the children into a pitch black oubliette, teeming with monsters and all sorts of hazards... and if you're lucky you get your kid back un-eaten at the end of the day.

I can't see the reason for the reaction from OP if this is not the case.

I bet the poor lady wishes she hadn't asked now!! Think she has a resounding answer!

Makingchocolatecake · 21/11/2024 13:05

Is your child meant to stay inside when all their friends are outside playing? Just explain that it's ok at nursery because it better lit or something. And make sure they dress him properly.

It would be great if @Singlema99 came back to explain why she thinks her child will turn to dust (or whatever!) if he's outside after dark.

Clearly he's a reverse vampire.

Never move up to Scotland you’d not leave the house between October and march 🤣

vickylou78 · 21/11/2024 17:50

Blimey op it gets dark about 3:30 in December so would limit his outside play quite a bit. Also it's good to let them feel comfortable in the dark. In some countries like Norway it's dark most of the day.... Should they never go outside with their children?
But agree should be suitably dressed for the cold.

DazedAndConfused321 · 21/11/2024 18:04

Are you scared he'll get darked on?

I was thinking the op, maybe, is scared of the dark. I was when younger if out alone with nobody about, and at home. It went eventually.

I pretty much agree with the general consensus on here about your child being able to distinguish home rules are different to nursery rules, but that you might need to ask them to make sure he is wrapped up in appropriate clothing.

The issue that might crop up about keeping him inside is that you’d need to have another staff member free to do this, and it also might be that there isn’t one available for it, not might it be policy to lone work with a child.

Skepticgal · 21/11/2024 18:13

I would be delighted my child was getting exercise outdoors

Jack80 · 21/11/2024 18:24

Your child just needs dressing in the correct clothes.

amigafan2003 · 21/11/2024 18:33

Oh look - another post the op has run away from..........

alwaysthepessimist · 21/11/2024 18:37

She’s worried he will get ‘darked’ on

peanutmother · 21/11/2024 18:42

Send him in with appropriate clothing

At nursery they need warm clothes. Layers. Warm coats: wellies. Hats and gloves

A nursery garden will be safe

Kneidlach · 21/11/2024 18:51

Never ever visit most of Scandinavia in the winter OP.

Pixiedust88 · 21/11/2024 18:51

Why can’t he play outside with the other kids at nursery in the dark? If you tell them he can’t play in the dark because he’s not allowed to at home you’ll stunt his social skills. My BILs ex wife wouldn’t let my niece play outside at all in the gated front garden in the middle of the day. I used to let her if I was watching her as I’d sit out in the front garden with a drink so she was 100% safe. She ended up socially awkward because other than school playtime she didn’t play with any other kids because her mom just wouldn’t let her play out the front or have friends round to play in the back garden

mondaytosunday · 21/11/2024 18:55

It's very different playing in presumably a fenced off area with supervision than taking your child on your own to a playground at night. And I'd let my kids play in the garden if it was enclosed and I could see them.

Newusername3kidss · 21/11/2024 19:01

Oh this has made me chuckle. He can’t possibly be out IN THE DARK!!!! at our nursery they played out at all times of the day , no matter the weather and I love that. Also he might have been encouraged to wear appropriate clothes but didn’t want to. Being a little bit cold is not the end of the world - I assume he’s running around anyway!

Doodar · 21/11/2024 19:04

what do you suggest they say to him, the reason he can't play in the dark like the rest of the kids?

Mysterian · 21/11/2024 19:16

Sounds fun. Think I'll organise some dark play at my nursery.
