Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

Immediately went to find advert. Made me laugh. Loved it. What's the problem?

WildFigs · 14/11/2024 19:11

From what I've seen, it's mainly racists getting their knickers in a twist because an actress pointed out that some white people are white.

JWKD · 14/11/2024 19:09

How do you know Santa Claus is heterosexual?

You'd need to ask Mrs Claus about that 😉

Turbo4 · 14/11/2024 19:12

Im not keen on the advert because I am not a fan of Adjoa Andoh but I’m not boycotting boots because of it.

kierenthecommunity · 14/11/2024 19:13

I quite like the advert, it’s glitzy and fun. I also like the actress and not remotely bothered about drag queens as the advert is pretty camp.

The Mrs Claus saves the day thing isn’t very novel but that doesn’t make me want to boycott anywhere.

Any advert that makes people demonstrate what divs they are by complaining about wokeism is a winner for me 👍🏻

And I’ve cleaned up with Advantage points this year taking all my beauty empties back so personally I love Boots 😂

sharpclawedkitten · 14/11/2024 19:13

I can't see the issue with the ad.

And Boots will be paying plenty of employer NI - they can't dodge that. Neither can Amazon.

CowboyJoanna · 14/11/2024 19:13

I have noticed this trend of every ad on tv having a white and black couple. Its something I didnt noticed until DH pointed out.

Im curious about it, but Im not going to boycott Boots over it because its not harmful (unlike companies that celebrate misogyny).

One of the funniest examples of woke political correctness in a christmas advert though was this ad of a muslim woman in full hijab taking part in christmas festitivies and im like, come on REALLY? Im all for equality but thats like hiring a vegan to work at a butchersshop Grin

No boycotting here.

She said -

The actor remarked on the moment that Charles and Camilla appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to wave at the public with their family.
“We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony,” she said in a conversation with presenters Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham.

“I am very struck by that,” she continued. “I am also looking at those younger generations and thinking: ‘What are the nuances that they will inhabit when they grow?’”

The day after -

“I think I may have upset a few people yesterday,” she told host Paddy O’Connell.
“I was talking about the day and how marvellous it was and then looking at the balcony at the end and suddenly going: ‘Oh it’s so white!’ because the day had been so mixed and I didn’t mean to upset anybody.”

Interesting that she's actually half-white herself.
It was an unnecessary comment because what were they supposed to do - magic a black person to add to the balcony or bring back her fellow half-white woman (MM) to add to the diversity? She must have known it would ruffle some feathers but hey ho.

People make such a big deal of all this race nonsense but boycotting a shop for what she said is stupid. There's no Christmas without some crazy ad hate hoopla anyway.

  • from a black woman (just incase it's necessary to state).
Inauthentic · 14/11/2024 19:13

I wonder how many GC Mumsnet users feel similarly offended. I’d guess the percentage is quite high.
The advert seems to be pushing they/them pronouns.

I didn't notice that. I like the woman who plays Mrs Claus in it, seen her in so many programmes over the years and she's extremely versatile. She looks good in the Boots advert.

Waffle78 · 14/11/2024 19:14

It's because it's the woman who said the palace balcony was too white. As in no ethnic people on there.

Littlemissgobby · 14/11/2024 19:14

Just watched the advert I think it’s really good. I think it’s fun. So folks are now moaning because it’s got a black lady in and possibly drag queens who I didn’t really see. I don’t really look that intensely adverts. I enjoy the message that’s what it is. These so-called snowflakes that literally get obsessed and upset so easily, and they want to say that people on the left of the snowflakes give it a rest.

StandingSideBySide · 14/11/2024 19:14

PaminaMozart · 14/11/2024 19:06

I've not seen the advert and can't be bothered.

But I have been boycotting Boots for YEARS because, instead of paying their taxes in the UK, their 'Headquarters' is in a tiny rented office in Zug, Switzerland.

I try not to support businesses that dodge their taxes. I also avoid Amazon, and I'll never buy a Dyson again.

I didn’t know that.
Thanks for the intel

I’m GC and it didn’t bother me to be honest. Wasn’t as impressed with the “women’s work” aspect of it, but still nothing to get wound up about. It’s just a stupid advert at the end of the day.

Fairyliz · 14/11/2024 19:14

The fuss is because was that she didn’t say the royal family were all white but that they were too white; the implication being that this is a bad thing. If I said the dinner I had just eaten was too beige you would assume it wasn’t very healthy.
Imagine someone saying the adverts on tv are too black, how would you react to that?

How to tell us you don't know any Muslims.

So the crazy, racist right whingers who wang on about Free Speech want to boycott Boots because someone said a factual thing and they didn't like it.

They make themselves look more stupid by the day.🙄

No, in my husbands case it's because it's all drag queens

Well, he is wrong because it isn’t all drag queens

It doesn't take much for the GC of MN to get offended.

ExhaustedHousewife · 14/11/2024 19:03

I think if a white actress had said a black royal family didn't have many white faces, people would be acting a lot differently. That's the gist of it I should imagine.

She is best known for playing a black version of Queen Charlotte. Mentioning that the actual Royal Family is very white is not just some random comment coming from her. She gets asked about the Royals and why Queen Charlotte was represented as black in Bridgerton in pretty much every single interview she does. Interviewers expect her to discuss it. She also wasn’t saying it as a criticism, if you read her actual words.

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2024 18:34

As far as I can tell, people are upset because there's a black woman in it.

A black woman that's openly racist.

TiredyMcTired · 14/11/2024 19:16

Tryonemoretime · 14/11/2024 19:03

Re the leading lady in the Boots advert and her comment about the royal family on the balcony being 'too white'.....
I think if the leading lady had been white and the royal family had been black and she'd said 'The royal family are too black', she would have been called a racist and her career would have been ended.

I have not been able to see Adjoa Andoh in the same light since that comment. I was watching at the time and you could see the instant reaction of “wtf” on the face of Myleene Klass who was sitting next to her. Commenting on the skin colour of the family was totally inappropriate and I just could not believe she said it. As you say, if it were the other way around there would have been uproar.

sharpclawedkitten · 14/11/2024 19:16

I had to go back and watch it again to spot the drag queen.
