Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

Why on earth would you go to the trouble of starting a thread about an advert you couldn't be arsed to take 5 seconds to Google?

Not that I believe the OP hasn't seen it

No I deliberately didn't watch it and started this thread so I could understand what I'm supposed to be offended by when I do eventually watch it 🙃

No, in my husbands case it's because it's all drag queens

He knows that Adjoa Andoh is a woman, right?? Is it the short hair that scares him?

The leading lady said the royal balcony looked "too white" that's why people are boycotting, not because she's black but because of what she said.

Re the leading lady in the Boots advert and her comment about the royal family on the balcony being 'too white'.....
I think if the leading lady had been white and the royal family had been black and she'd said 'The royal family are too black', she would have been called a racist and her career would have been ended.

I mean, I could open a peevery and hold peeves all day as a living, and even I can't raise my piss above lukewarm for it.

I love this!! You have a way with words for sure

Samcro · 14/11/2024 19:04

Wow people notice a lot in adverts
I didn’t realise I had seen it till I checked.
only thing I noticed was the actress in and that’s jus cos I always think she looks miserable.

spoiler alert the royal family are mainly white

StandingSideBySide · 14/11/2024 19:04

I thought it was because the actress who plays Mrs Claus made a comment about everyone being very white on the balcony after the coronation.

Meadowfinch · 14/11/2024 19:04

I very seldom shop in Boots. They are more expensive than most, and I still haven't forgiven them for their rationing of the morning after pill when they claimed they were trying to prevent it "being misused". (!?)

Nasty reactionary judgmental American company.

Their new Christmas ad is pretty sexist but since I don't shop there it has no relevance to me.

Inauthentic · 14/11/2024 19:04

The boycott petition was launched by the far-right extremist group Britain First, according to one media outlet.

I don't know if it's true, but it would hardly be surprising.

Fireworknight · 14/11/2024 19:05

I thought the advert was pretty boring to be honest. Wasn’t obvious what the advert was for.

And if a white actress said it about a black family? You must know that would be a completely different story.

WinterBones · 14/11/2024 19:06

all the moaning i've seen online has been from nasty old white men who feel like they're being left out.

poor babies.

PaminaMozart · 14/11/2024 19:06

I've not seen the advert and can't be bothered.

But I have been boycotting Boots for YEARS because, instead of paying their taxes in the UK, their 'Headquarters' is in a tiny rented office in Zug, Switzerland.

I try not to support businesses that dodge their taxes. I also avoid Amazon, and I'll never buy a Dyson again.

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 14/11/2024 19:07

It’s being boycotted by 2 lots.

  1. because S.Claus is black and especially because the actress, Adjoah Andoh (Brigerton) commented some years ago that the Royal family on the balcony were v white contrasted with the diverse performers and congregation in the church
  2. by people objecting a reference to a non-binary ‘them’ as one of the gift recipients.
Mostly it’s the former.

I am not boycotting Boots on either ticket. I am not a R Wing Zealot, and though I am gender critical , people who prefer to present as gender free / non binary exist and they deserve an over packaged bubble bath gift set as much as the next person.

Inauthentic · 14/11/2024 19:07

Apparently this is from Britain First " Boots has just launched a sickeningly woke Christmas advert starring the notoriously anti-white racist actress ‘Adjoa Andoh’ (who described the British Royal Family as ‘Terribly White’) as ‘Mrs Claus’.
“The advert also promotes ‘They/Them’ transgender pronouns, a concept created by far-left extremist LGBT movements in an attempt to undermine traditional gender norms, biological sex and the traditional Christian family.

Santa Claus is the only heterosexual white man in the whole advert and he is deliberately portrayed as a lazy good-for-nothing

LBFseBrom · 14/11/2024 19:08

I don't think I've seen the ad, if I have, I've not noticed it. What's it about? I suppose I can look it up, it's probably on youtube. I like Boots very much.

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 19:08

I've seen someone on MN say 'there's no one in it who looks like me' No, because bigots are not usually represented in Christmas adverts.

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2024 19:09

Pretty sure the only people that remember the actress as ‘the one who said the royal family are too white’ are racists.

Because no one else would hold a grudge like that.

How do you know Santa Claus is heterosexual?

Nikitaspearlearring · 14/11/2024 19:09

Jc2001 · 14/11/2024 18:52

WHAT DID SHE SAY?

Made a comment about the people on the balcony at Buckingham Palace all being white.

Keleshey · 14/11/2024 19:09

Rachel757677 · 14/11/2024 18:47

I've just seen it. Obviously it's a shit Christmas ad that makes the mistake of trying to push an agenda instead of being Christmassy. However, I am not offended by it, and I certainly not going to boycott Boots because of it. It's just a crap advert...

Exactly how I feel.

pl228 · 14/11/2024 19:09

I can’t see any issue with the advert other than it a cacophony of noise and busyness (like most Christmas stuff) and that they’re marketing shit nobody actually needs. So I wouldn’t have bought anything like makeup/bath sets/products anyway - but the advert wouldn’t worry me if the stuff was actually worth buying.

Except she didn't say they were too white. She commented on the contrast between the abbey and the balcony. Not negatively. Just a comment on it. Stop reading the daily mail!

motherofbabydragon · 14/11/2024 19:11

no boycotting boots as there has been worse adverts but i did roll my eyes a bit at the hypocrisy. for a actress who criticised the royal family for not being diverse enough the advert she was in was next exactly truly diverse either excluding white men and the advert looking predominantly not white. just a minor eye roll though as like i said there have been worse adverts

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 19:11

I love a Boots 3 for 2. I'm not snobby about bath products though.

LBFseBrom · 14/11/2024 19:11

Here it is:

It's OK, it's like a pantomime rehearsal, very festive, with Sana featuring. Unless I am missing something. I daresay now I've found it I'll see it on TV all the time.
