Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

Deadbeatex · 14/11/2024 18:30

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

WHAT DID SHE SAY?

I already wrote it upthread but nobody read it,so I wrote in capitals.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 14/11/2024 18:55

I have just watched this advert on YouTube and wondered what the fuss was about then I scrolled across and saw a YouTube channel with the title "Boots problematic Santa" I clicked on it to read some of the comments and fuck me I wish I hadn't because it's made me so fucking angry. Bunch of absolute thick cunts imo

1apenny2apenny · 14/11/2024 18:55

Just watched it, loved it. I really like Adjoa Andoh, perfect for the broke of Mrs Claus 🤶

People never cease to amaze me. Imagine having the time and the enough bigotry to care about an advert. Who even watches adverts these days?

Exactly!

Meanwhile I’ve just seen the M & S advert .. they’ve only gone and used one of my all time favourite songs..🙌🙌.
The Jackson Sisters ..I Believe in Miracles.
..the most joyful sound. 😊🤩. Merry Blimmin’ Christmas indeed.

lap90 · 14/11/2024 18:57

Ah the annual let's boycott insert company here on twitter because they feature black folk in their Christmas ad - a great British tradition, one i will not partake in.

Eraserbread · 14/11/2024 18:57

Just looked it up. I can see the feminist argument against it I suppose, but I don’t think it’s boycott worthy, and I can’t understand anyone getting riled up about an advert. Then again, I find it weird that people get excited for adverts every year too.

Exactly! Nobody bothers reading anymore! Someone wrote it,I wrote it again and I'm still being asked (shakes head).

Wardrobebirth · 14/11/2024 18:58

It’s not great that the message seems to be “useless men - everything is done by women, but men take all the credit”. I don’t think women would rally behind an ad that implied women were useless and needed men to do everything for them, would they? I know it’s meant to be humorous, but I think this joke has grown a bit old now. Other than that, the ad is okay. I’m not bothered about the drag queens, scarcely noticed them really they’re so ubiquitous these days. And I can’t see that it matters if the actress made some comment about the royal family being white - so what? They are white.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 14/11/2024 18:58

Why on earth would you go to the trouble of starting a thread about an advert you couldn't be arsed to take 5 seconds to Google?

Not that I believe the OP hasn't seen it

BeensOnToost · 14/11/2024 18:58

I don't really like the joke - haha women hard at work behind the scene, perception of a lazy man usually credited for Christmas with noone thinking about all the behind the scenes work and appreciating her and her teams efforts.

All packing stereotypically womens gift and dressed up in cute outfits for work.

I don't think it's modern or glam and misses the mark.

I wouldn't boycott it, I just don't get what, as their target audience, I'm supposed to relate to and feel inspired about.

I'd rather see Mr&Mrs Clause working as a team with a diverse workforce making and gifting thoughtful gifts.

I want to feel the fuzz of a touching gesture or see some Christmas magic.

Havalona · 14/11/2024 18:59

I don't see, watch or hear ads, simply because I don't watch TV and I listen back on radio and zap through any ads if it ain't Radio4.

Ads are vile brainwashing tools for the gullible masses.

And finally, from my snooty perch 😂all I can say is that Boots could never pay enough for all this free publicity. I'd say they started the commentary for just that reason!

Coolasfeck · 14/11/2024 18:59

This sounds like a few nutters on Twitter. Don’t know why you felt the need to raise awareness of foolishness here. These are not normal people.

Upwiththelark76 · 14/11/2024 18:59

Just watched it …. What’s the issue ?? I honestly have no idea ?

Deadbeatex · 14/11/2024 18:59

LaLaLouella · 14/11/2024 18:36

So you are basically asking if being racist is ok???

No, no it's not.

I will be increasing my spend in Boots this year...

I didn't know the issue was (potentially) racism until I began to read the responses, (most do allege racism but there are other responses hence the potentially). I was very clear I haven't seen the advert and didn't know the reasons for the boycott hence my question.

No I don't support racism or any of the other "isms" I'm very much of the attitude of live and let live, I judge people on their actions not their skin colour, who they sleep with (as long as its consensual and of a legal age etc) or any other reason

I'm not forming any opinions yet on the advert or on Boots, I'm waiting to actually see it but was interested in what the fuss was about and other people's opinion on it

No boycotting here.

She said -

The actor remarked on the moment that Charles and Camilla appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to wave at the public with their family.
“We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony,” she said in a conversation with presenters Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham.

“I am very struck by that,” she continued. “I am also looking at those younger generations and thinking: ‘What are the nuances that they will inhabit when they grow?’”

The day after -

“I think I may have upset a few people yesterday,” she told host Paddy O’Connell.
“I was talking about the day and how marvellous it was and then looking at the balcony at the end and suddenly going: ‘Oh it’s so white!’ because the day had been so mixed and I didn’t mean to upset anybody.”

SardinesOnGingerbread · 14/11/2024 19:01

I mean, I could open a peevery and hold peeves all day as a living, and even I can't raise my piss above lukewarm for it.

Ohhbaby · 14/11/2024 19:01

Biffingtonclyro · 14/11/2024 18:39

Is that why?! I thought we were past that and it was because there were drag queens and theys and thems in it.

Thats definately why! I think it is really disingenuous to suggest it is because there is a black woman in it. No - one has a problem with a black woman! I just googled the advert and I understand why people feel uncomfortable with all the men dressing up as woman. We are having to fight to get men out of our bathrooms and keep on trying to say that dressing up as a woman when you are a fully intact male, does not make you a female. And know it feels as if boots are celebrating that.
And I'm not saying you have to agree with that, but I think it is really low to try and suggest that the people who feel uncomfortable are now somehow racist

Coolasfeck · 14/11/2024 19:01

As an aside I’m sick of Twitter shit being shared and made bigger than it is. In real life normal people aren’t in forever made up wars.

Lifelover16 · 14/11/2024 19:02

Because it implies it’s normal and amusing that women pick up the slack from lazy men.

username358 · 14/11/2024 19:02

I had a look on Twitter. It seems to be because:

It's too woke
It's anti Christmas
It's anti Christian
The lead actor is a bigot and racist

Some are boycotting Boots because they are tax dodgers.

GetrudeCoppard · 14/11/2024 19:02

I haven’t seen it, but I definitely won’t be boycotting Boots. I don’t suppose anyone will.

Maybe I’ll suggest a counter-boycott of John Lewis for having such a white cast in their Christmas ad.

People are nuts.

ExhaustedHousewife · 14/11/2024 19:03

I think if a white actress had said a black royal family didn't have many white faces, people would be acting a lot differently. That's the gist of it I should imagine.

Nine9 · 14/11/2024 19:03

I haven't seen the ad, but I KNEW before I read it in various posts on this thread that it would be due to a non-white person being featured.
I remember the embarrassing and ridiculous uproar when Sainsburys featured a black family in their ad because white people didn't feel "represented" and that they clearly weren't wanted as customers. Utterly pathetic (I'm also white).
