Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

Yes there are drag queens in it (they use a lot of make-up so fair play to Boots Grin) along with lots of other people but reports of the boycott are mostly about the black Mrs Claus.

That's different though. Drag queens aren't everybody's cup of tea, it's not comparable to racism or oppression.

There’s a big difference in ‘not your cup of tea’ and getting openly offended by them appearing in an advert. From experience, the vast majority of drag queen haters also turn out to be casually homophobic

elizzza · 14/11/2024 18:45

Every year there’s some nonsense over a Christmas advert - wasn’t it the Sainsbury’s one a couple of years ago because it showed a mixed race family, and last year people decided the M&S ad had some secret message about the Gaza conflict (even though it was filmed in August). Must be nice having nothing better to get worked up about!

Katemax82 · 14/11/2024 18:35

No, in my husbands case it's because it's all drag queens

Are drag queens bad?

ExhaustedHousewife · 14/11/2024 18:46

The leading lady said the royal balcony looked "too white" that's why people are boycotting, not because she's black but because of what she said.

Rachel757677 · 14/11/2024 18:47

I've just seen it. Obviously it's a shit Christmas ad that makes the mistake of trying to push an agenda instead of being Christmassy. However, I am not offended by it, and I certainly not going to boycott Boots because of it. It's just a crap advert...

RedRiverShore5 · 14/11/2024 18:47

I haven't seen any ad but I don't use our local Boots because they don't have any manned checkouts

It's the ones that protest too much you have to look out for 😉

Cece92 · 14/11/2024 18:49

It's weird that people watch an advert and look at a persons colour. Haven't seen it myself but definitely wouldn't have thought twice about the ladies skin colour. Weird xx

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 18:49

All the boycotters can go shop in JL after watching their 'terribly white' advert.

Well it could be that I guess . Still not the same as racism as such because drag queen is a fetish, a paraphilia, not an identity. There isn't the same oppression as with racism. Homophobia is of course wrong but it may be that people don't want their children exposed to sexual fetishes? Maybe that's it . I can't speak for these people but the reasons are probably quite varied.

How very odd that people read so much into an advert for a chain pharmacists!

ExhaustedHousewife · 14/11/2024 18:51

ITS NOT BECAUSE SHE'S BLACK ITS BECAUSE OF WHAT SHE SAID!!!

MissFancyDay · 14/11/2024 18:51

It can't be because there are black people in it, that's nonsense. Black people are in loads of adverts.

AgnesX · 14/11/2024 18:51

Is that the one with older lady? It was her age that stood out for me not her colour.

Good for Boots in both counts.

SpudleyLass · 14/11/2024 18:52

I'm not boycotting, just hate their ''advantage card'' - its utterly useless.

Pretty much this.
The advert sure ain't subtle but it's hardly offensive.
Unless you're looking to be offended that is.

People never cease to amaze me. Imagine having the time and the enough bigotry to care about an advert. Who even watches adverts these days?

SableOrGules · 14/11/2024 18:53

Are you allowed to boycott it not on the content of the advert but that Christmas is still weeks away and it's far too early?

Oh yeah - something about red green and silver Christmas paper hats or something? Because of course the only reason you'd ever use those colours at Christmas would be because they're in the Palestinian flag, rather than because they are absolutely standard Christmas colours

PuppyMonkey · 14/11/2024 18:54

A lot of people do find drag quite offensive to women, particularly the drag queens that do an OTT caricatured “woman face” with a hilarious porn style name etc. I haven’t seen the Boots ad though TBF.

Most people who are offended won't have seen it on TV. They would have looked it up on YouTube, so they've gone out of their way to be offended.

drippingtapp · 14/11/2024 18:55

It absolutely baffles me that in 2024 people are so up their own arses still. The professionally offended are really going for it here.
