Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

Deadbeatex · 14/11/2024 18:30

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

How is that worse? Like you'd describe an event as "terribly fancy". It's not a negative, basically meaning very.

Exactly, and I posted the same upthread!
There's two dictionary definitions, it can also mean "very" and have nothing to do with negative or positive, which is the way I took it and think it was meant.
It would make sense with the context of the comment, which was commenting on the contrast of the diverse wedding earlier on in the day.

LBFseBrom · 18/11/2024 23:39

Yes - or 'awfully'.

People have taken that remark way out of context. However they have had it all explained to them and still feel the same way so my conclusion is that many enjoy being outraged. In the same way that many have very strong, negative opinions about Prince Harry's book, 'Spare', but have never read it. That's what the likes of the Daily Mail thrive on. We might as well give up.

Both sides should give up really
no one is likely to change the way they think because of what someone on MN thinks

Some people say it’s taken out of context
Some people say the context highlights the racism
Some people say it doesn’t
Some people say she didn’t mean that
Some people say she did
Some people say it was an unnecessary comment to make
Some people say it’s free speech
Some people say terribly means this and others say it means that

round and round and round we go.

TofuTart · 18/11/2024 23:49

People can learn and benefit from reading other people's perspectives and lived experiences that differ from their own on here though, I know I have over the years.

I do absolutely agree it’s just all the constant repeating

Maybe there are some people genuinely offended by the remark. But a lot of it is faux outrage by ultra-right wing propagandists.

VivienneDelacroix · 18/11/2024 23:54

It's the anti-woke snowflakes crying because a fictional character has been given a different skin colour to the one they had in their heads. Poor loves.
They don't seem to care that Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (though not the wee donkey) are overwhelmingly depicted as being white - funny that.

Shhhthedogssleeping · 19/11/2024 00:01

A lot of people do find drag quite offensive to women, particularly the drag queens that do an OTT caricatured “woman face” with a hilarious porn style name etc.

That was the part I found offensive. I object against men caricaturing ridiciously outdated, stereotypes of women. Don’t care what colour anyone is, but drag is horrible and offensive to many women.

The ad is pretty shit too imo.

Willyoujustbequiet · 19/11/2024 00:14

BeatriceAndLottie · 14/11/2024 18:45

There’s a big difference in ‘not your cup of tea’ and getting openly offended by them appearing in an advert. From experience, the vast majority of drag queen haters also turn out to be casually homophobic

As opposed to the misogyny of womanface?

sleepwouldbenice · 19/11/2024 00:49

I recall seeing it and thought a woman of colour as r/s Claus was a refreshing change

I wasn't paying attention enough to notice drag queens, instagrammas, pronouns etc

Did think it was a bit Naff with the "having to sort it out for the man" theme.

Read about the fuss, rolled my eyes

Overall it probably did try too hard, but I really can't get worked up about it and am also amused by thinking of certain types of people exploding with rage over it....

TriesNotToBeCynical · 19/11/2024 01:29

I don't think it is so much the people exploding with rage we should be concerned about, it is the cynical gang leaders and politicians (who I won't name out of respect for Mumsnet) who feed and exploit that rage (on Twitter and elsewhere) that we should be frightened about.

Yes, I agree.

SassK · 19/11/2024 06:58

I tend to find 'displays' of inclusivity, that are very clearly deliberate, twee and awkward; maybe I'm too cynical! True inclusivity isn't noticeable (I think?).
The Boots advert is lovely visually, but I'm uber aware when watching it that it's very contrived.
It's mainly women who shop/work in Boots - I liked the here come the girls adverts. And I loved their only you (love that song) advert with the sisters.
Anyway to answer the question, no I won't be boycotting!

But why comment at all? If I said someone was terribly big compared to their friends would it be taken as just a true comment or a nasty dig?

Deathraystare · 19/11/2024 07:22

TBH not got a tv at the moment but I have heard about it. Not bothered one way or another!

WhoDatDen · 19/11/2024 07:24

Not many gingers in this advert. Come on Boots, feature some teeshan goddesses!

I didn't see any disabled people or anyone from a Far Eastern cuture either. If these big companies want to demonstrate how inclusive they are then they really should actually be inclusive. It isn't all about the drag queens.

Hateboots · 19/11/2024 15:28

Don't buy from Boots chemist online
They refuse returns
I lost all money from my purchase they claim they didn't receive it, I have an email from Royal mail saying it was delivered to Boots
I will never go back to boots

If you've got proof of delivery you might consider taking them to court:

I get that it is too complicated for the poster to go to court but the fact that she has proof of delivery to Boots should count for something.

Write a carefully worded letter to Boots Head Office. They will take notice, they're a reputable company.; I must say I've always found them very good and helpful. It will cost you nothing except a stamp. Please do that. Good luck.

Fair enough, but it can almost certainly be done entirely online.

You just go to the MCOL website in my post above and set up an account and then just follow the instructions. Use the Boots head office on the Boots website as the entity you're suing. The instructions are very clear, much better than I could do!

You will have to pay a court fee which you get back if you win though, so if that is a problem then the alternative of writing a complaint letter to Boots head office would be cheaper to do.
