To think this is an unacceptable wage?

I'm a qualified teacher with 21 years' experience who has just started supply so flexibility with a poorly husband and three kids of my own.
Just did a full day supply (8.30-3.30) and came out with £112 net.
Hubby thinks decent wage, I think piss-take!
Opinions please!

@Shinyandnew1 Ah well. I'll not let my career aspirations be hindered by the fact I didn't marry a rich man. I mean, if that was the case I could just give up work and sit on my bum... I mean have "hobbies"... like so many do!!

This thread is crazy. Having a degree doesn’t mean that you work ‘harder’ than a person without one. But you can’t just walk into a job as a teacher, a doctor, a vet etc etc. Quite rightly, you need to have an appropriate level of education that is both measurable and standardised. Its necessary for public confidence and a degree is a way of achieving that. I don’t care if a cleaner, retail worker etc has gcses, much less a degree. It doesn’t mean that I don’t value their role, they just don’t need advanced education to do it. By comparison, no one is operating on my dog without a degree In veterinary medicine, plus all the additional training.
There does need to be an incentive to completing a degree, such as a higher salary ( statistically your life time earnings ARE higher with a degree). This is even more important now the debt is so high.

Well quite!

My point was…you have posted many posts about low pay worries-as an HLTA, as a supply teacher, poorly DH etc

I just meant that retraining into another job which often doesn’t earn very much at all, might not be the best career move.

@Shinyandnew1 Anything is better than teaching - ask teachers!

I am one!

I also know teachers who have trained as counsellors but had to go back into teaching just to pay the mortgage!

Good luck though-I hope it all works out for you financially.

TrumpIsACuntWaffle · 14/11/2024 18:51

I used to get 140 per day gross for day to day supply 8 years ago. M6 at the time.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 18:52

@Shinyandnew1 Are you not also desperate to leave? How many years in and on what scale? It's a relentless profession atm.

OP posts:
Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 18:54

@Shinyandnew1 I'm only doing a 0.5 class teacher job share currently so not pulling in a FT wage at any rate (M6 after 21 years).

I haven’t read the whole thread but I actually do agree with you @Youthiswastedontheyoung

Are you employed through an agency? They probably skim some off the top. I really hate them. See if a school will employ you directly.

£112 x 5 = £560 a week
£560 x52 = £29120 per year, net.
The key thing is that this it is really a part time wage, as your hours in school are short and you don’t have the planning and other extras. There’s also 13 weeks off. So while I agree it’s not a good salary for your level of training, if you supplement it with a bit of tutoring after school finishes and during half terms it should top you up quite a bit.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 18:58

@Snoopybird Unfortunately not currently possible with a 4 yo.

27 years in and UPS3. My school is lovely, though the job itself has changed so much, it can be bloody hard.

I have considered lots of different alternatives. I won’t leave to go into something that wouldn’t pay the bills though, so I’m still here for now but keeping my eyes open!

I’m only part time, which helps, but I refuse to leave and work full time for less money than I’m on for my p/t salary.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 19:01

@Shinyandnew1 You earn a lot more than me then as I'm still on M6.
But yes, the job is so incredibly demanding. Even supply teachers that just "babysit and stick on videos" work hard.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 14:46

@BeensOnToost Well perhaps more than a cleaner if I'm permitted to say that?

It's the problem with continuous cost of living stuff.

Stuff is expensive, minimum wage rises so mortgages don't default and cause a financial crash, bosses and governments choose not to increase other salaries proportionately citing unaffordability.

Your money would have been worth more 15 years ago. We all get it. I used to earn 50% more than minimum wage, I've been promoted 3 times, I still earn 50% more than minimum wage for much more work. Public Sector.

For a job with no responsibility outside of your core hours, yes.

Do many professional jobs actually require that?

Yes-that’s why I’m staying put for now-I would probably have to accept MPS pay if I moved schools!

AnotherChildFreeCatLady · 14/11/2024 19:09

It sounds like most people are saying that it's fair, or rather it's in line with the average rates but that said, I think it's incredibly low.

GlasgowGal82 · 14/11/2024 19:10

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 10:00

Around £5 ph over minimum wage is decent? Really? For a qualified professional?

If you're getting paid £112 net, that's £16 per hour but if you want to calculate the different between minimum wage you need to do your hourly rate calculation based on your gross pay.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 19:13

@Shinyandnew1 Absolutely this. And being further screwed over by no pay portability any more. It's shocking.

So I'm thinking aloud here but... does anyone know minimum household income to qualify for social housing? With our rent likely to go up yet again and no security is it worth considering? A friend said it may also help with the bedroom situation so 4 yo doesn't have to share with us but not sure? We're currently private rented - 3 bed (kids 4, 14, 17).

There's no such thing as a minimum/maximum income for social housing. However, it is in high demand and if you are appropriately housed you are likely to be put on a long waiting list. If you are privately rented there is no harm in getting on the list though. You should look into your benefits entitllements and see whether you are eligible for any payment. Citizens Advice can do a benefits check for you, or there are online calculators.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 19:18

@GlasgowGal82 Ah I see. Thank you - that's really helpful info.
I'd be interested to know if we'd be currently classed as overcrowded?
