Do you use fake jewellery to travel?

I've only just come across this as a thing very recently.

I don't know anyone in real life who does this?

I have expensive jewellery, engagement, wedding & eternity rings are in excess of 20k. And I generally wear a gold Anoushka necklace or similar.

I travel a lot for work & pleasure & I always wear my jewellery.

I generally only bring what I wear - I don't carry extras. But I've recently read about people having entire fake sets that they wear travelling

I'd hate that! Do you have fake jewellery just for travelling?

LOL. My most expensive ring was about a hundred quid so no, I do not have fake jewellery for travelling.

Appleblum · 12/11/2024 02:23

No but I do tend to leave the more valuable stuff at home.

Spartak · 12/11/2024 02:24

I had a plain silver band that I bought from Argos when I went to Morocco years ago.

It made my story about how I was "waiting for my husband" more plausible when I just wanted to be left alone to read my book and drink coffee.

I don’t understand the logic around wearing fakes. If the fakes are good enough, they’d still make you a target for robbery. I think I would find the experience of being robbed more distressing than the loss of the jewellery, So no, I don’t wear fakes.
edited to add the real jewellery stays at home

MounjaroUser1233 · 12/11/2024 02:47

OMG I would love to have 20k of jewellery on a single finger 😅 that's almost a year's salary!

I think it depends where you go for your work and pleasure travels? Of course muggings can happen anywhere but some places are obviously far more dangerous than others.

As PP has already said, wearing a "wedding ring" can help to get rid of pests so even if you don't get the whole shebang of engagement, eternity and wedding ring it might be prudent to just wear something as a safety precaution. You could get your other half to buy it / help choose it so it would still have some sentimental value if that is important to you ❤

I guess another thing is how you'd feel about having holiday snaps taken without your actual wedding rings, in this modern age of Instagram and so on, in which case maybe getting a mock-up of everything would maybe make sense... Though that would still cost a lot of money surely? Never heard of anyone going into a jewellers and asking for a cheaper version of an entire set of rings to be made. Maybe try a few different ones to check they are asking for a fair price for their labour!!

TandyhatesAmanda · 12/11/2024 02:53

No but I don't wear Birkins or my watch when in the UK and only carry one card with me. Not because I'm scared so much as I don't want some organised crime gang getting their hands on my stuff. It shouldn't be this way, it's so sad.

SharpOpalNewt · 12/11/2024 02:56

My engagement ring is worth a few grand but I never take it off.

Mostly I just wear simple pendants and costume jewellery anyway. I'm more worried about loss than theft with travel.

FupaTrooper · 12/11/2024 03:02

I've spent a lot of time going through the borders around Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. You are better off wearing nothing.

Wearing fakes mean they won't take the real stuff, but the actual robberies can be reasonably violent.
Travel insurance will cover the theft usually, so I would be more worried about physical and emotional trauma.

I either turn my engagement ring around so only the plain band is visible or I leave it in the safe.

PeloMom · 12/11/2024 03:03

Yes. I have identical travel set to my wedding set and the most used jewelry. The rings I wear daily are $$$$ and I’d hate to leave them by a hotel sink or drop them in a pool on holiday so yes, I have a full travel set.

BettyBardMacDonald · 12/11/2024 05:07

No but I only take inexpensive items.

Getamoveon2024 · 12/11/2024 06:12

Depends on where I am going, but often yes. Years ago, I read the small print on my insurance policy which stated that jewellery items over £10k (I think, might have been more) were not covered if left in your hotel room safe. They had to be placed in the hotels main safe. I did not fancy doing that, so got a travel set which I’ve used ever since.

beachsandseaicecream · 12/11/2024 06:49

I travel a lot and only wear my wedding ring and a pair of earrings I wear all week.

I leave my engagement ring and eternity ring at home. It's more as I'm worried about losing them, leaving them in the room safe, and with all the sun cream and my hands swell in the heat I don't find wearing them all particularly comfortable.

Azertyuio123 · 12/11/2024 06:58

I don't wear any jewellery! But if I did, I probably wouldn't wear expensive jewellery in certain poorer countries. I'd feel too bad at the price of my jewellery compared to people's living standards.

Agree with other posters that a fake set wouldn't put off robbers as they presumably wouldn't know that it's fake if it was well-made.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/11/2024 07:02

No, but my wedding and engagement rings are half the value of the op's. Apart from that I wear little jewellery.

LesLavandes · 12/11/2024 07:13

So, those that leave expensive jewellery at home when you travel, are you not worried about a burglary in your house while you are away?

Toomanysquishmallows · 12/11/2024 07:30

Hi , I bought cheap jewellery for Ibiza , because I was worried about losing sentimental jewellery on the beach .

Install a bolted-down safe at home, if large amounts of valuables are being insured, some insurance policies will only cover certain values in the safe

JackJarvisEsq · 12/11/2024 07:38

I don’t as my things are pretty mid range but DHs friend does

he had his watch ripped from him in Tenerife not long ago and was grateful it was the fake one

he says he’ll only wear the real ones at home or in Dubai

CrushOnEminem · 12/11/2024 07:42

Thanks for the replies! For those of you who have fake sets can I ask if they're replicas of your actual jewellery or totally different (apart from the value) & where did you buy them?

Thinking about it I don't tend to travel through too many more turbulent countries or regions. And I'm not a beach holiday person, though I have travelled long haul to China, Thailand, Australia etc & still worn my own jewellery without issue.

Like other people have said I'd be far more worried about leaving my valuable jewellery at home & have always felt it's safer on me than anywhere else.

Do people have fakes for other valuable things? Handbags? Watches?

I'm finding this fascinating!

OP posts:
RosesAndHellebores · 12/11/2024 08:04

@CrushOnEminem no, because we are low key. Wealth whispers and I doubt there's much whispering in Dubai.

NukaCola · 12/11/2024 08:07

I am not a jewellery person really, but if I was that concerned about loss/theft I'd just not bother and leave it all at home.

Allfur · 12/11/2024 08:08

Whats an anoushka necklace

Allfur · 12/11/2024 08:09

Im not a big fan of any overt displays of wealth

YaB · 12/11/2024 08:15

As a few PP have already explained, most people wouldn’t be able to distinguish costume/fake jewellery compared the real expensive jewellery, IMO it’s not worth buying the real stuff anyway but I feel like that about most things. I don’t understand why folk spend a fortune on designer things but each to their own.
