Do you use fake jewellery to travel?

I've only just come across this as a thing very recently.

I don't know anyone in real life who does this?

I have expensive jewellery, engagement, wedding & eternity rings are in excess of 20k. And I generally wear a gold Anoushka necklace or similar.

I travel a lot for work & pleasure & I always wear my jewellery.

I generally only bring what I wear - I don't carry extras. But I've recently read about people having entire fake sets that they wear travelling

I'd hate that! Do you have fake jewellery just for travelling?

No. I travel fairly extensively and have never been mugged whereas two different homes in England has been burgled

Roomforactivites · 12/11/2024 08:18

I had my engagement and weddings rings stolen from a hotel safe in the summer so will only be taking fakes (probably wouldn’t wear anything) from now on. My replacement rings are an upgrade but nothing can replace the sentimental loss even if insured. I never usually take them but a family member ended up in a&e the day of our flight so had a lot on my mind.

I have a fake private jet for travelling. I disguise it as a BA plane

Whats an anoushka necklace

It's essentially a wealth boast by OP
For those in the real world, it's more Emperor's New Clothes.

No if I can't wear it at home I wouldn't wear it travelling and the reverse

mitogoshigg · 12/11/2024 08:24

Er no. My "good " jewellery probably cost less than the fakes people buy. My engagement ring gets left at home for anything dirty or riding around on the motorbike though

Petrine · 12/11/2024 08:24

It would depend where I was travelling. I wouldn’t wear my jewellery or take designer handbags somewhere like Nairobi. I wouldn’t wear fake - I just wouldn’t wear any at all.

BigDahliaFan · 12/11/2024 08:25

I don't have anything very expensive. But I wouldn't wear anything on the kind of holidays I go on...which aren't your round a pool holiday.

Pfpppl · 12/11/2024 08:27

I do, but they aren't the same as my real jewellery. I generally wear yellow gold and my holiday jewellery is silver. It's not because I'm worried about muggings, I'm worried I'll lose it. I take all my jewellery off every night, when I have a bath/ shower, take rings off if applying sun lotion etc. So generally on holiday my jewellery stays in the room during the day and I put it on of an evening. I don't trust hotel safes, but I'm happy to leave my silver jewellery in the room as it's not worth much and holds no sentimental value.

MissCordeliasCoats · 12/11/2024 08:30

I wear cheap silver rings on holiday not because my actual jewellery is expensive but because I don't want to lose it. However my holidays involve water parks with rides and slides so I take the jewellery off. If I was just walking around a city I would probably turn my engagement ring to the inside of my hand so it just looks like a silver band.

Parapaderapa · 12/11/2024 08:38

Isn’t this a thing for people with £100k+ jewellery though? I wouldn’t have thought it was worth it for under that, surely insurance covers any losses?

ChocolateBiscuitsandaCuppa · 12/11/2024 08:39

I have a dummy engagement ring that is an exact copy of my real one but in silver and zirconia, and a dummy wedding band that's more blingy in look than my real one.
It's not just about the cost, it's the sentimental attachment to the ring my husband chose and proposed with, and the one he put on my finger at our wedding. I'd be so upset if I lost those. And given how absent-minded I can be when jet-lagged, and some of the destinations we go to where theft is a big possibility, I don't take the chance.

JackJarvisEsq · 12/11/2024 07:38

I don’t as my things are pretty mid range but DHs friend does

he had his watch ripped from him in Tenerife not long ago and was grateful it was the fake one

he says he’ll only wear the real ones at home or in Dubai

The irony being that the income from selling fake designer watches and handbags funds criminals...

Ellie1015 · 12/11/2024 08:53

If you are trying to deter robbers i would buy costume jewellery for travelling rather than fakes. Something you like but not as valuable.

I am not concerned about being mugged travelling any more than here. My fingers swell in the heat so should really leave my rings at home for that reason as often have to leave them in room anyway but usually i forget this issue until i get there.

LaLaLaurie · 12/11/2024 08:56

No. I’d rather travel without any.

CoffeeCantata · 12/11/2024 08:56

You learn something every day about other people's lives!

I've only ever had 'fake' jewellery. I don't know anyone with anything of this kind of value - OP must move in very different circles to me! 😆

putitdown356 · 12/11/2024 09:02

I don't have fakes, but most of my jewellery is plain gold 9ct or 18 ct. If I had an expensive gemstone ring I would consider a fake, I think that way at least if it is stolen and was antique or commissioned you dont have that stress.

Also some travel insurance policies have a single item limit.

DangerMouseAndPenfoldx · 12/11/2024 09:04

I am not sure what you mean.

Yes, I have heard of people with jewellery valued in the millions having a copy made and the original held at the bank.

Yes, I have heard of people with jewellery worth a few tens of thousands buying some cheaper jewellery to wear on holiday. Possibly even buying something in a similar style.

No, I don’t think people buy or have made fakes/copies of lower value jewellery. Take your Annoushka necklace for example. It’s worth probably £10k? Would you buy a knock of fake if it? Really? Why? Better just to wear a cheaper necklace from somewhere else.

pinkgrevillea · 12/11/2024 09:08

No. And this kind of thing is why I fear we are doomed as a species.

flowersintheatticus · 12/11/2024 09:10

I don't wear any rings, so makes travelling easier.

AutumnLeaves24 · 12/11/2024 09:18

I have cheaper jewellery to travel with & leave the rest in the bank vault when travelling.

or not 😂😂😂

@CoffeeCantata I expect half the posts are more fake than any jewellery!!

SewingIsMySuperPower · 12/11/2024 09:23

I always wear fake jewellery on holiday. My wedding and engagement rings are precious to me and I'd hate to lose them or damage them (saltwater and chlorine aren't kind to jewellery!).

The fakes are nothing like the real rings. My 'wedding' ring was from Pandora, and my 'engagement' ring was a cheap cz from a jewellers. Neither look very expensive.

All my other jewellery on holiday is obviously cheap. I wear a lot of novelty earrings, etc in lovely bright colours. I'd never take anything expensive with me. I have some old silver studs i take to wear at the beach/pool (can't stand having empty ears!). Those earrings are definitely worse for wear based on repeated exposure to saltwater and chlorine.

Based on my other jewellery, I doubt I look like a lucrative option for thieves 😂

I don't generally carry expensive bags, etc at home anyway, so everything else on holiday is what I would use at home.

It's not worth the hassle of trying to find adequate travel insurance for my 'real' jewellery. It'd cost a fortune.

BaronessBomburst · 12/11/2024 09:25

My jewellery isn't valuable enough to need copies but I still leave it at home and take costume jewellery for travelling.
In Peru and Bolivia I didn't even do that. I only had a pair of silver earrings and dressed down to avoid attracting too much attention.
I remember my brother hiding most of his cash and iPod every time we approached a checkpoint in Mexico. He had a dummy credit card too, from a closed account.

Finger swelling is another reason for fakes! My fake rings are slightly bigger than my real ones because I also swell up in the heat x
