Do you use fake jewellery to travel?

I've only just come across this as a thing very recently.

I don't know anyone in real life who does this?

I have expensive jewellery, engagement, wedding & eternity rings are in excess of 20k. And I generally wear a gold Anoushka necklace or similar.

I travel a lot for work & pleasure & I always wear my jewellery.

I generally only bring what I wear - I don't carry extras. But I've recently read about people having entire fake sets that they wear travelling

I'd hate that! Do you have fake jewellery just for travelling?

This has made me realise I haven’t been anywhere particularly exciting since getting engaged/married 😂

Not that my jewellery is worth very much at all, but it is sentimental!

"I just wear them? They’ve never fallen off yet and even if they did they’re insured I suppose.

Fake bags are an absolute no from me, very ethically dodgy and you can almost always tell a fake, plus they just don’t feel as nice. So I also take a couple of real designer bags on holiday.

Where are people going that they think everything is likely to be stolen? As I mentioned before we’ve travelled relatively extensively and don’t usually have this as a major concern."

South African township perhaps? India? Would take my good stuff to a nice European hotel but obviously not to areas of poverty. Just why?

Your chances of being robbed/mugged are so much higher in a European city than in India.

ihaveliterallynoidea · 12/11/2024 17:55

They'd have a hard time taking off my wedding and engagement band - unless they chop off my finger! So no - I travel a lot too, but don't take it off. Mind you, my jewelry isn't quite 20 grand.

Depends what you do.. if you keep it in the safe and get a hotel taxi to a restaurant and back then that's safe.. Europeans wear their jewellery in hotels it's normal. Whereas a township in South Africa or somewhere remote in Mexico? Me thinks not..

OneTC · 12/11/2024 18:12

If I was fearing getting mugged I'd just do without, but in reality I just don't buy stuff I can't afford

Londonrach1 · 12/11/2024 18:13

I have an expensive watch which cost £100 so not expensive according to you. When I travel I leave it at home and wear a £10 one. The £100 watch is very special to me because who gave it to me. Apart from that I don't have anything expensive

Cocothecoconut · 12/11/2024 18:23

If your that bothered about wearing expensive jewellery leave it in a safe at home or in a safe deposit box
mon another point
is it insured when you go away or fingers crossed it won’t happen to you

CrushOnEminem · 12/11/2024 18:30

I'm not at all bothered about wearing my jewellery wherever I am & I've no intention of leaving it anywhere

@thestudio actually my rings are not hugely shower.. I don't wear huge rocks. However they're handmade & have exceptionally high quality stones & that's where the value lies

I'm 100% certain that many many people have bigger rings than me.

I have a fake private jet for travelling. I disguise it as a BA plane

This made me LOL 😂

ToSleepPurchancetoDream · 12/11/2024 18:38

I've had a large expensive showy ring for a signficnat anniverasry recently and was really looking forward to wearing it on holiday, with the chance to dress up and gaze at my manicured hands.

I haven't really worn it much walking the dogs, cleaning the house or to Tescos tbh.

Do you think it depends where you are travelling?
e.g. hostel in Bogota not a good idea?
5 star in Mauritus probably OK?

It’s insured with specific item cover. There are certain stipulations like must be wearing it on my person or in the hotel safe.

FarmGirl78 · 12/11/2024 19:06

Going by some values on here it turns out ALL my jewellery is fake jewellery. 🤣

IhateHPSDeaneCnt · 12/11/2024 23:08

My engagement ring has been valued at £62K. We always try to get valuation down because insurance is insane. I don't think people realise it's bonkers value and the reason it's insured is in case the stone get knocked out - despite the setting having to be verified every year as part of the insurance process. I do wear it every day so on a day to day basis after 24 years not too bad! Wedding ring was 'only' £600 platinum ring Cartier.

Thanks for the replies! For those of you who have fake sets can I ask if they're replicas of your actual jewellery or totally different (apart from the value) & where did you buy them?

Thinking about it I don't tend to travel through too many more turbulent countries or regions. And I'm not a beach holiday person, though I have travelled long haul to China, Thailand, Australia etc & still worn my own jewellery without issue.

Like other people have said I'd be far more worried about leaving my valuable jewellery at home & have always felt it's safer on me than anywhere else.

Do people have fakes for other valuable things? Handbags? Watches?

I'm finding this fascinating!

My fake wasn't a replica. It was a plain white gold band. I'm not married anymore and I hocked it a few years ago for more than I paid for it. Hooray!

Superworm24 · 13/11/2024 11:03

No. But I dont really like anything flashy. I do have a love bracelet but rarely wear it because it's not a style that I like anymore. Same with handbags, I have a few nice ones but they are aspinal and max mara. So I doubt I could get fakes anyway.

PrincessAnne4Eva · 14/11/2024 08:46

For my diamonds and platinum wedding rings, I bought similar looking cheap CZ and silver from Argos, but IMO moissanite looks nicer. I just lost my most recent cheap CZ ring, so I'm on the lookout for a moissanite one this time. My gold Trollbeads bracelet with all gold charms is slowly being replaced with silver off-brand beads on a gold plated snake bracelet. I find shopping for the cheap stuff as much fun as the expensive stuff, I just accept its longevity probably isn't the same.

StMarie4me · 14/11/2024 09:07

All my jewellery is real jewellery so I'm not sure what you mean? What would fake jewellery look like?
I am very lucky in that none of my jewellery is valuable though. So no one would want to steal it. But it's definitely not imaginary. HTH.

StrawberrySquash · 14/11/2024 09:31

Oh, absolutely. Ever since the time when I was staying at Lady Wimplethrop's and Mama's emeralds went missing. Thankfully there was this funny little Belgian man who sorted it all out most efficiently, but lesson learned!

QueenCamilla · 14/11/2024 10:00

I have an antique hand-painted copy of Picasso. Due to it's age and provenance it actually has quite some value.
Maybe I should get a fake of the fake to disguise it...🤔
But I don't really need to because by now it's obvious to me that burglars don't share my taste in modern art. I don't know what they mean by "prison culture" cause there clearly ain't any.

cookiebee · 14/11/2024 10:01

I suppose anyone who is worried could travel with a wealthy decoy lady, someone who is so bedecked in expensive jewellery that a robber wouldn’t look twice at whatever jewellery you have been conned into paying a ridiculous marked up price for. Then you could go on your way while the decoy’s mouth is taped and they are thrown in the back of a van.

I’ve never understood why people wear things that cost that much, it can’t be relaxing or enjoyable to require safes or insurance or just be concerned that you will be robbed. But it’s not for the individual, it’s to show the world how wealthy and important that individual is for possession such expensive things.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE gorgeous jewellery and beautiful suede and cashmere and silk. I wear things because I adore them. They are like beautiful treasure to me.

Much like others might like to eat out at Michelin starred restaurants on a regular basis or drive a stunning smooth and immaculately engineered car.

I think it's peculiar that you think the pleasure we get is purely to show off. Can't you tell the difference in quality? Can you seriously not feel it or see it and enjoy it?

That's sad if you don't. Beautiful things are one of life's great joys and we all need some of those these days

I don't feel nervous wearing things as they are just my regular things. I don't think most people feel anxious carrying thousands of pounds worth of technology with them in iPhones and MacBooks.
But any sensible person knows when it's not wise to wear. Just as any sensible person knows not to walk around in red dark alone in a crime ridden area. That doesn't mean they live in fear everywhere all the time

Point taken, a quality object is a beautiful thing, say a lovely woollen hand knitted blanket, you would pay for the skill involved as opposed to an acrylic mass produced one, so definitely. But status symbols are what I was referring to, diamonds are surely the most famous example of this. A product that is essentially worthless but was hyped up and given a huge markup, are a status symbol and one that people still fall for. Diamonds are to show everyone how wealthy and important you are, there is no real quality or meaning other than that, but they have a huge monetary value and there is a lot of crime surrounding possessing them.

Don't people worry about having to remove really valuable jewellery at airport security and it potentially getting lost or stolen?

You don’t have to remove rings or earrings to go through airport security. Depending on the type of scanner, you don’t always have to take off your watch. If you do, you can put it in your hand luggage/handbag instead of just putting it in the tray.

TandyhatesAmanda · 12/11/2024 02:53

No but I don't wear Birkins or my watch when in the UK and only carry one card with me. Not because I'm scared so much as I don't want some organised crime gang getting their hands on my stuff. It shouldn't be this way, it's so sad.

Edited

I don’t understand. What’s the point of having nice things if you never use/wear them?

TandyhatesAmanda · 14/11/2024 12:10

I very rarely go to the UK apart from to the rural countryside to see family. If in London I don't wear anything valuable for example. But so far, no gangs in Tarrant Hinton 😀
