Do you use fake jewellery to travel?

I've only just come across this as a thing very recently.

I don't know anyone in real life who does this?

I have expensive jewellery, engagement, wedding & eternity rings are in excess of 20k. And I generally wear a gold Anoushka necklace or similar.

I travel a lot for work & pleasure & I always wear my jewellery.

I generally only bring what I wear - I don't carry extras. But I've recently read about people having entire fake sets that they wear travelling

I'd hate that! Do you have fake jewellery just for travelling?

The older I get, the less attractive 'wealthy' looks.

It's so weird to express yourself through money.

If I was in this position I wouldn't bother bringing them. Where do you put all the wedding rings if you're swimming? Why not bring a wedding band if you want something but leave the others at home?

I just wear them? They’ve never fallen off yet and even if they did they’re insured I suppose.

Fake bags are an absolute no from me, very ethically dodgy and you can almost always tell a fake, plus they just don’t feel as nice. So I also take a couple of real designer bags on holiday.

Where are people going that they think everything is likely to be stolen? As I mentioned before we’ve travelled relatively extensively and don’t usually have this as a major concern.

Install a bolted-down safe at home, if large amounts of valuables are being insured, some insurance policies will only cover certain values in the safe

Sadly even that can be removed whole! Even one completely compliant with insurers demands, professionally installed etc.

JC03745 · 12/11/2024 15:20

I've travelled a fair amount and only wore a fake, plain wedding band in Naples and Egypt. DH and I weren't yet married when we went to Egypt, and I'd read about it being a good idea. Less leering from men on the street and more accepted if sharing a room in the hotel- I honestly don't think anyone would have cared less though if I hadn't worn a ring.

For Naples, I'd read about scooters stopping to rip of necklaces etc. Most other places, I just wear my real wedding band.

ShortNTall · 12/11/2024 15:23

No. I do have expensive stuff (mostly rings and earrings) but it mostly lives in a safe. The only jewellery I wear day to day is a 2mm gold wedding band. Like others, I worry that the decoys would just attract unwanted attention.

Yes of course jewellery is at its most basic just sparkly stones. Cars are just a means of transport. Clothes are just body covers and holidays are just trips away from home. But the difference in quality makes a huge difference to the enjoyment of life.

Not necessarily. Some people don't care about those things and feel life satisfaction for different reasons. Studies have also shown when you upgrade in luxury, ie, more expensive car, house, etc, you feel an initial boost and then your happiness baseline resets to where it was before. Same goes for the opposite direction.

Obviously if you genuinely enjoys those things, that's different.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 12/11/2024 15:44

I always wear costume jewelry. It's the only type I own.v😁

Mosalahiwoukd · 12/11/2024 15:45

I do. I take a paste replica tiara when we go on cruises. It’s from a reputable theatre props company, and exact copy of my diamond one but I don’t need to worry about losing it.

Mosalahiwoukd · 12/11/2024 15:49

On a more serious note, a colleague had her huge diamond engagement ring from her wanker banker fiancée about a month before she was mugged at gunpoint ( USA) for it, her watch and her fancy Mulberry type bag in the middle of the day.
When she got engaged I did ask her if she was worried about losing it … we were in a London pub and it was so bling that people were noticing it .

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 12/11/2024 15:54

No - jewellery and designer bags are to be worn and enjoyed. They're all insured with worldwide cover and I've taken them literally all over the world with me.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/11/2024 15:59

Don't see the point - it would make no difference to me if I were to be mugged/robbed/hurt for a cubic zircona or for a twenty grand diamond.

pl228 · 12/11/2024 16:01

Not helpful, but I just think jewellery is a total PITA. I don't have any. I didn't have an engagement ring and although I did get a cheap wedding ring, I gave it to my dd (I have been married almost 25 years!).

If jewellery is too valuable to be taken on holiday, I'd just go without. Who wants jewellery in the sea or on the beach?

My dd has a few necklaces, they mainly cost about £20.

Clearly, I do not get it!

Figsonit · 12/11/2024 16:01

I imagine the reason some women leave their engagement/eternity rings at home when travelling is because they have sentimental value. Replacements paid for by insurance woudn't feel the same.

HaddyAbrams · 12/11/2024 16:05

Haha no.
The jewellery i wear everyday probably cost £30 in total and is worth pennies.

I can't imagine wearing 20k with of stuff! If I did i think I'd be scared to leave the house in case I lost it.

I also suspect this thread isn't for me Grin

Sure, but presumably the safe has been installed according to the insurer's specifications based on the valuation of the contents? So anything that's stolen in that case is covered. It won't help in the case of sentimental value, but the only safer choice is armed guard.

@CrushOnEminem

I travel wearing my rings, which are covered worldwide by our insurance, generally some pretty unexciting earrings and a few bracelets. I do put my rings in hotel safes without worrying too much. I don't think my Apple Watch is going to be too alluring a target.

EmotionalSupportBiscuit · 12/11/2024 16:09

Yes I do. I have a fake ‘bridal set’ (a more subdued version of my real engagement ring and a narrow ‘wedding’ band). It’s not so huge or blingy that someone would consider stealing it.

I wear it when I’m travelling abroad on my own partly because I don’t want to take the expensive stuff and partly because I want to avoid any unwanted approaches/hassle.

I also think if I was in an accident they would see them and know to look for my DH’s contact details.

I often have a sense when travelling alone that nobody would look after me if there was a crash so slightly pathetically I wear them because I want people to know that somebody loves me!!

okydokethen · 12/11/2024 16:18

lol

JackieGoodman · 12/11/2024 16:35

Have done, fake wedding ring as mine isn't covered in travel insurance and wasn't sure on single item limit for contents insurance (need to check before next hols).

ElaborateCushion · 12/11/2024 16:44

I sat next to a lady at dinner on a cruise last year who'd been mugged of all her jewellery and possessions in Barcelona, so yes, I have a cheap duplicate of my engagement ring and wear a plain wedding band when I'm going somewhere deemed a bit risky but I still want to wear something. Otherwise I just don't wear them at all and leave them behind in the safe in our room.

I don't wear the fake ones at home though. They're for holidays in pickpocket/mugging hotspots or where they might get damaged only!

My rings aren't tremendously expensive in the scheme of things and are covered by my house insurance, but they are sentimental and I'd dread to lose them.

HollyKnight · 12/11/2024 16:56

Everything is insured, but I wouldn't take anything with sentimental value because it couldn't be replaced. In saying that, I would rather not be mugged, so I wouldn't wear anything out in public that is obviously valuable. That would go for fake jewellery too.

housemaus · 12/11/2024 16:56

I leave my engagement ring at home when I travel, less for the potential of theft but because I'd lose it - I take it off every night or it annoys me, so the risk is too high when I generally travel hotel to hotel, rather than staying in one place. I'm on my second wedding ring (lost the first one - you see the problem) so I'm less precious about that, it was cheap and it's more the symbolism than the ring itself unlike the engagement ring which was a family ring.

I've got a cheap lookalike engagement I wear because I like how it looks with my wedding ring, but again I'm not doing it out of fear of robbery - I suppose were I to get robbed it means I'd be more than happy to hand it over, though.

ABirdsEyeView · 12/11/2024 13:54

Don't people worry about having to remove really valuable jewellery at airport security and it potentially getting lost or stolen?

Yes, this actually happened to me in China. I was made to take my bracelet off and I never got it back but in the rush and distractions of a busy airport security area, I didn't realise until we landed.

ParsnipPuree · 12/11/2024 17:06

Depends where I'm going. Dh would love me to have a little 'incident' with the valuable stuff! Help pay the tax bill. We're going on a South African safari and I won't take a thing. What's the point in talking fake jewellery?? To get mugged for nothing?

LynetteScavo · 12/11/2024 17:11

No, because apart from my engagement ring, I only have the fake jewellery. No one's ever peered at it.

South African township perhaps? India? Would take my good stuff to a nice European hotel but obviously not to areas of poverty. Just why?
