Do you use fake jewellery to travel?

I've only just come across this as a thing very recently.

I don't know anyone in real life who does this?

I have expensive jewellery, engagement, wedding & eternity rings are in excess of 20k. And I generally wear a gold Anoushka necklace or similar.

I travel a lot for work & pleasure & I always wear my jewellery.

I generally only bring what I wear - I don't carry extras. But I've recently read about people having entire fake sets that they wear travelling

I'd hate that! Do you have fake jewellery just for travelling?

Yes I have fake rings for travel or for "away days" etc. I am glad, because I recently lost the fakes after a day trip, so that was £30 well spent to save thousands if I'd had to replace my actual wedding ring (never mind the rest of the set), which was also a family heirloom, so the sentimental value could never be replaced.
As for other expensive jewellery, I tend to just wear my cheap stuff when away and wear the expensive stuff closer to home where I can retrace my steps if I lose it.

Figsonit · 12/11/2024 09:53

I've had jewellery stolen in hotels before so now I leave my good stuff at home and bring other costume items.

I had my engagement and weddings rings stolen from a hotel safe in the summer so will only be taking fakes (probably wouldn’t wear anything) from now on. My replacement rings are an upgrade but nothing can replace the sentimental loss even if insured. I never usually take them but a family member ended up in a&e the day of our flight so had a lot on my mind.

How awful!

I've never worried about hotel safes before this thread. Where did that happen?

idnhxun · 12/11/2024 13:18

This is why
I don't wear jewellery
I don't have a fancy car
My house looks like there's nothing valuable in it
There's no price on peace of mind

LoobyDoop2 · 12/11/2024 13:22

I don’t take my engagement ring away with me. More worried about losing or damaging it than theft but it’s too precious to risk it. I wear the cz ring my husband proposed to me with instead.

ItGhoul · 12/11/2024 13:33

Nope. And I don't know a single person IRL who does this. It seems to be one of those things that basically exists only on Mumsnet.

None of my jewellery is especially expensive anyway, but even if I regularly wore very valuable items, there's nowhere I'd visit on holiday where I'd be any more of a target for theft than I would be at home in the UK. I can just about see why someone might leave an extremely expensive piece at home if they were scared of losing it on the beach, but I really don't see why you'd need to replace it with a fake instead of just not wearing it.

I have been to many countries/continents over last 40 years, only wear earring studs 9ct and a Mickey Mouse plastic watch when travelling . No other jewellery ever.

Not allowing yourself anything nice, solely because you fear it might be stolen, isn't my idea of 'peace of mind'. That, to me, just sounds bleak.

I think my most expensive item of jewellery is actually worth less than £500, as from an aesthetic point of view I prefer silver to gold and am not that into precious stones. But if I liked expensive jewellery and could afford it, I'd bloody well buy it and wear it - I certainly wouldn't deny myself things I liked and wanted on the off-chance that someone might rob me!

mindutopia · 12/11/2024 13:45

Normal travel, I wear my wedding and engagement rings. I don’t wear any other jewellery, but it would be weird not to wear them going somewhere totally ordinary.

But in the past (less so these days), I used to travel to a number of what we might consider ‘developing countries’ - where that sort of jewellery would stand out and attract attention potentially. In that case, yes, I have a less flashy gold band that I wear instead. But I used to wear this ring to pass as married even when I wasn’t, because it was advantageous to appear married, both when I was truly single and travelling on my own and when Dh and I were travelling but dating, as in certain areas it could cause some hassle travelling as an unmarried couple, so we just said we were married.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 12/11/2024 13:48

Interesting topic. My engagement ring is worth about 20k and I’ve never really thought about it except in countries such as South Africa where I left it in the hotel safe or in a pouch in my bra to travel. I still wore my diamond necklace and earrings but these are a lot more understated and could easily be fakes.

I love my ring/jewellery and never take it off and I’m lucky that it’s diamond and platinum so I don’t really need to worry about it being damaged by salt water or chlorine. I can’t imagine not wearing it on holiday to be honest but maybe I should reconsider.

Google is your friend...

Someone very kindly explained what it was for me upthread, but thanks for stating the bleedin obvious - i was also highlighting that not everyone knows designer bling names.

Don't people worry about having to remove really valuable jewellery at airport security and it potentially getting lost or stolen?

Loafbeginsat60 · 12/11/2024 14:03

I travel wearing my wedding ring and leave watch, eternity and engagement ring at home.

Too expensive to lose or have stolen. I have a terrible habit of losing things....

Hoppinggreen · 12/11/2024 14:06

No, I don't see the point.
If anything gets stolen its insured and I enjoy all my jewelry and wear it as often as I can.
I would never buy anything too expensive to be enjoyed

Haroldwilson · 12/11/2024 14:11

Aw no, you bought precious things and now you have to spend all your time guarding them!

My jewellery is mostly in the under £10 bracket.

Jewellery is just sparkly stones.

CrushOnEminem · 12/11/2024 14:19

I don't spend my time guarding my jewellery! I wear it every day & love it.

I would feel far less secure leaving it at home or in a hotel safe.

I asked about the fakes as I wasn't sure it was something people actually did or not & there's been some interesting perspectives here on it.

I don’t think this is a thing? We travel pretty regularly and I’ve never had to remove my jewellery.

downwindofyou · 12/11/2024 14:25

I have a safe at home. Everything is insured. When I travel I wear a simple platinum band. I try to pack light so I take as little stuff as possible so excess jewellery and handbags would be a nuisance to me. I also don't need to look fancy on holiday so I leave everything at home. My wedding and engagement rings are a fair bit more expensive than yours though so it really would be a bit stupid to wear them on holiday where there is variable security and a paltry hotel safe.

ABirdsEyeView · 12/11/2024 14:25

@YaWeeFurryBastard thanks for the reply. I've been taking mine off and putting it in handbag to go through the scanner. So I wear silver, which is pretty but not valuable.

Yes of course jewellery is at its most basic just sparkly stones. Cars are just a means of transport. Clothes are just body covers and holidays are just trips away from home. But the difference in quality makes a huge difference to the enjoyment of life.

CoCoNoDough · 12/11/2024 14:28

Yes I wear haribo rings when I fly, occasionally hula hoops

Olika · 12/11/2024 14:33

I just got a silver ring with zircon to wear as my wedding ring when I am travelling with my DD. I don't feel comfortable wearing my actual ring as I feel like I am going to damage it or hurt DD when handling our bags, pushchair and DD. I only wear my actual ring when we go somewhere and DH is with me.

QuestionableMouse · 12/11/2024 14:34

I paid £19 for my last ring so no, I'm not massively concerned.

Bigcat25 · 12/11/2024 15:10

If I was in this position I wouldn't bother bringing them. Where do you put all the wedding rings if you're swimming? Why not bring a wedding band if you want something but leave the others at home?
