Stop me if you have already heard this the last few days, I am trying to make sense of how I feel about Trump and other right leaning wins:

“Woke” issues being pushed to where they have been, has empowered the right by giving them something real and legitimate to campaign against. Something more than their usual transparently false bogeymen.

In general, Authoritarianism, compelled speech, no debate. Specifically men in women’s sports, in women’s changing rooms, unfettered immigration, being asked to ignore the evidence in front of our eyes.

This is happening across the world, Italy, France, Germany, USA, UK.

I remain entirely committed to progressive taxation, a social safety net, collective bargaining, workers rights, public schooling and health services as well as the rights of everyone to live contented, unmolested lives.

I reject identity politics in their entirety. For example, I consider terms like “Woman of colour” to be the epitome of divisive, racist, sexist thought patterns that seeks to infantilise people and move their locus of control from internal to external. Disempowering people and making them victims.

I didn’t leave the left. The left left me.

Reasonable?

The conversation is related to Starmer

Starmer said that single sex spaces should be protected

with this claim for toilets and changing rooms

They are protected under the Equality Act which provides an exemption to a GRC. If you type "Equality Act 2010" you'll find it online.

That is not currently true.

It is true. There are exemptions to the EA and Starmer has both acknowledged biological reality and said women's spaces need to be protected.

AConcernedCitizen · 11/11/2024 23:37

GenerativeAIBot · 11/11/2024 23:32

That’s not what happened though is it. Proof is in the conversations being held now.

Imagine thinking that the conversations at half eleven at night on MumsNet are any reflection of how people voted in the US election 😅

Tandora · 11/11/2024 23:37

HRTQueen · 11/11/2024 23:36

They might be angry about the woke agenda but who is really going to vote on concerns about a man being in a woman’s changing rooms when it’s an everyday struggle to pay bills and buy food

but time and time again when asked at the polls why have you voted Trump the response was the economy

followed by immigration

why do people not want to listen and decided for those voters what their agenda was as it suits their narrative

but who is really going to vote on concerns about a man being in a woman’s changing rooms

a lot of people apparently 😭😭😭😭. Hence this thread.
It seems like it should be absurd but unfortunately it’s the reality we are living.

Ok can you link to a list of toilets and changing rooms which refuse GRC holders entry

Can someone please explain this to me. Since when does anyone need a certificate, or otherwise, to enter a toilet ? What is this argument even about?

The 2010 Equality Act says that single sex spaces can be protected even if a person has a Gender Recognition Certificate.

CraftyPlumViewer · 11/11/2024 23:39

EasternStandard · 11/11/2024 23:15

Excuse me for not being dim enough to believe them

Sure

Can you link to where it was unlawful? I don't recall that being the response of the EHRC

https://www.equalityhumanrights.com/our-work/advising-parliament-and-governments/letter-minister-women-and-equalities-definition

The relevant part re. unlawfulness being the first paragraph of page 7, whre the EHRC explain that the more targeted a change to the EA is (e.g., if it establishes only specific spaces as sex-segregated)
the less likely it is to be a violation of the Convention (i.e. unlawful).

A wholesale change (sex = biological sex, throughout the Act) is precisely what the EHRC warned against.

That is why, when Truss (as a backbencher) tabled a bill to change sex to "biological sex" in thr Act, Badenoch (through an aide) said that while she was supportive of the aims of Truss's bill, it was unworkable in its current form.

So no, I don't think the Conservative Party were remotely serious when, after 14 years of inaction and in the face of polls showing a devastating election loss, they suddenly announced their new policy of changing sex to mean biological sex.

But the entrance to toilets aren’t policed!!!

I don't have an excel spreadsheet listing every single public facility in the UK that is a single sex space. I gave you two examples of rape centres that are legally non trans inclusive.

It doesn't exist. @Tandora is correct. No toilet or changing room refuses people with a GRC entry, regardless of Starmer's words

ok. But are you suggesting that’s a problem? Like labour should be doing more to police entry to toilets?

The genuine left have always been more socially conservative but firmly left wing fiscally. What a lot of people describe as left is actually liberal, a very different beast altogether. Starmer's lot are not left. Not remotely. They are liberal and liberals love identity politics because it allows them to ignore the much bigger problem of class and the lack of equal opportunity, here in the UK anyway.

Yes, see the definitely 'left' Communist Party eg. They certainly do not think men can miraculously become women.

The 'true' Left think this controversy is a distraction from the real fight against the reactionary, corrupt Right (Right wing Conservatives Reform etc) who want to privatise the NHS and have successfully privatised Water, Trains, Education etc. so nothing works in this country but the corrupt very rich are off-shoring £billions.

This controversy is a (very successful apparently ) way of dividing the working people of this country and the US ( though surely no one here thinks the Democrats are left) and stopping them fighting for their rights against a vicious, corrupt right wing who have made and continue to make billions on the backs of the mass who work long hours, often with no job security and in very difficult jobs.

Large tracts of people in the Labour Party of course, especially older women who fought for women's rights all their lives, can recognise misogyny wherever it appears and it's certainly appeared with men invading their safe spaces, hospital wards, rape centres, prisons etc etc. (Elizabeth Fry, the great reformer, who campaigned against men in prisons with women 200 years ago, must be turning in her grave, )

Littlemissgobby · 11/11/2024 23:49

To the person that stated they voted trump because of jobs well under biden there were more jobs created that is a fact go look it up if you don't believe me. Under trump if he does tariffs it will cost approx 4000 dollars more a person. Under trump he will make diabetes medicine that boden hot to 35 a month back to 800 so please tell me how it was just about the economy?
The problem is there is a hell if alot of misinformation depends on what news uou get etc. The facts are out there and he gave tax breaks to the rich under trump. Unfortunately he lied loads yo so people belive them lies.
We have moved to the right in this country and alot don't realise it. Plus the last few pages of this post had been about the trans argument which affects such a small minority yet apparently that makes so called women on here go oh well I don't like the left stance on that small issue I know I will vote trump or in the uk reform or he tory party who really don't give a shit about women even if they pretend they do . I guess if you stand for nothing you fall got everything hey. Trust me there would be nothing I mean absolutely nothing after everything I have heard that would make me side with nasty horrible people on the right sorry

What a bizarre comment. There are plenty of other threads that have occurred at other times of the day discussing how people voted in the US election. This is not the only one.

Turns out quite a few Americans also don’t want males in women’s spaces, changing rooms, prisons, rape shelters etc etc and taking places on women’s sports teams, or putting vulnerable children/teenagers onto potentially irreversible medical pathways.

Who knew.

Plenty of toilets are single sex. Again, it depends on the organisation, the law protects women's spaces. After 14 years of chaos, it's not going to be resolved in a few months. Unfortunately no one has a magic wand.

You actually do realise that you can be both, don't you? I mean, I actually am very fiscally to the left, I actually would abandon all private schools because I believe in equality and yet, I happen to also agree with equality of everybody else as wealth, so I would say, if you are a true socialist? Which I don't think I am but I happen to be on that side. I actually think that actually, you would actually think you would want equality of everybody, including class, race, religion, sex, and even gender

How do you expect me to have links to toilets? Toilets don't have websites. Every single building in the UK has a toilet, they aren't all mixed sex.

If someone with a GRC enters a toilet, no one will know as it's illegal to ask for one.
