The cynical part of me is wondering if he's been given the Children in Need challenge to raise his profile because he's not all that good as a DJ and there's been a lot of grumbling about that. Hats off to him it's a good cause and I wouldn't want to do it, but I'm baffled at him being a radio presenter.

I'm being a bit mean, is that what you mean? I'm just wondering. I could be entirely wrong.

Maybe it's because he has three children ,who have autism and because of their disabilities would be considered children in need?

Vallan · 11/11/2024 09:58

It boosted Vernon Kay's reputation after he did his ultra-ultra last year.

TinkerTiger · 11/11/2024 09:59

Really don't give a flying fart, I know that we can think of silly things while we also have more serious things going on in our lives, but of all the silly things I could give space to in my head this would never be one.

CurbsideProphet · 11/11/2024 10:12

They needed someone who would agree to do it and known well enough to get people out donating. I imagine he agreed because of his own children and knowing how important some services are to families.

potatocakesinprogress · 11/11/2024 10:20

Why are you baffled at him being a radio presenter? Because you don't think it's a good look for the BBC given his personal fiascos or because you object to hearing northern accents?

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/11/2024 10:24

What a weird thread. I've just thought about it and of several friends that work for the BBC all of those who are 'public facing' take part in CIN fund-raising or challenges. This is at a local radio level so I certainly can't imagine anyone at national level gets away without some kind of involvement. How different things and challenges are divvied up presumably comes down to how much time they have to commit to it?

Marblesbackagain · 11/11/2024 10:27

Given he has three children with autism and has spoke about the challenges I find your opinion very unfair.

He did some very heart wrenching interviews about his learning curve and the reality of being a parent trying to figure out what works do his family. He was very honest and open about his privilege making some of the steps easier.

He has done many challenging to raise money.

Yes, your OP reeks of mean girl.

obsessedwithfreshbread · 11/11/2024 10:59

I thought it was the newest DJ that got it... Rylan, Vernon now Paddy... probably some others that it didn't apply to!

I'm northern.

Don't be ridiculous. It's just because they thought he'd like to do it and people would like to watch him do it

ExtraOnions · 11/11/2024 12:49

He’s dreadful … he would still be a lifeguard at the local leisure centre, if he hadn’t spent a career holding onto Peter Kay’s coat tails

His TV shows are ratings poison.. and has been one of the least popular appointments to R2 in a long while.

I’ve had funnier bouts if thrush

His accent as well - I know lots and lots of people from Bolton, and none of them speak like that. His moved away years ago, yet his accent gets stronger and stronger - almost like he fakes it (he does)

Daisypod · 11/11/2024 12:59

For the last few years at least it's always been a new radio 2 presenter that does the challenge

the80sweregreat · 11/11/2024 13:06

I do feel that he wants to out do Vernon , but they seem friendly with each other and PM seems keen to do this rather stressful sounding challenge. Fair play to him, Vernon's one last year was bad enough!

the80sweregreat · 11/11/2024 13:07

I don't mind him on the radio either
He always sounds chipper and happy.

WhichSock · 11/11/2024 13:08

I’m more surprised Children in Need is still on TV. You can’t argue with the cause, but the show, in common with most charity-type TV events, is awful.

I have met Paddy and Vernon and they sound considerably less Northern when not playing their Cheeky Northern Chap personas.

the80sweregreat · 11/11/2024 13:10

CIN has had its day I think.
I'd rather they showcased the smaller charities tbh , but probably would be a logistical nightmare and this is very well known and so on.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 11/11/2024 13:30

I wish him luck because VK's challenge was really tough last year and this looks even tougher. I don't know whether he's a good DJ because I can't stand Michael Ball doing love songs (loved Steve Wright doing it) so I switch the radio off and forget to switch it back on again! I think Sunday is my least favourite day on R2 now.

I disagree on the accent I live in Bolton and depending on whereabouts in Bolton, some people have very broad accents ,I think hexwss brought up in Deane which is neat to me i hear broad accents daily .

I have met him too, years ago

That's his accent. It's how he talks

It's also how half my family talk

Agreed. I grew up in Daubhill and he sounds just like a lot of people who live there.
I also moved away 40 years ago and the accent doesn't naturally disappear, it might gradually get less broad but it's still pretty obvious where I'm from. He sounds very much like my brother.
