Why has Welby not resigned?

Along with the at least 6 bishops and providence knows however many others within the organisation who were aware of this evil man’s conduct.

Listening to him tie himself in knots, trying to distance/excuse his inaction is despicable.

No idea. It is jaw dropping that he hasn't.

AlertCat · 10/11/2024 12:15

They don’t think it’s a big deal. This is the only explanation I can come up with for the number of men convicted of having or creating images of CSA who don’t get a prison sentence; the woeful punishments for rape and VAWG.

SweetSakura · 10/11/2024 12:18

Agree. It's astounding.

Wakeywake · 10/11/2024 12:23

They don't care. Corruption in politics is often talked about, but organised religion is much worse. They are all a bunch of hypocrites protecting their mates and their privilege.

araiwa · 10/11/2024 12:26

Its what they do

What they did

And what they will continue to do

There's thousands of years of previous...

WhichSock · 10/11/2024 12:27

It’s staggering he hasn’t resigned. Just goes to show that for the words, they really don’t give a shit.

Well yes, fair point. I suppose I’d just hoped that the organisation had evolved a bit, especially given the justified outrage about the conduct of the other lot.

“Shaken to the core, shocked beyond description” ? Not enough to rock the boat though, clearly. Shameful.

Because they delude themselves into believing they are special. All men in positions of religious authority do this.
So we have to work really hard to tear it all down, all of it.

1WanderingWomble · 10/11/2024 12:32

I don't know. He should resign IMO. Apparently he wanted Paula Vennels as a bishop. The man has no judgement but friends in high places it seems.

CatPlanet · 10/11/2024 12:35

Because The Church as an institution aka money/power source must be protected at all costs. And yes at the cost of children. That’s all there is to it. Powerful men protecting their source of power. And yes there should be a massive outcry that he resign, as well aa all those who knew and did nothing, or worse, helped cover it up.

averylongtimeago · 10/11/2024 12:42

I've just read the bbc report.
Smyth was "encouraged" to go abroad. Because those in charge knew what he was doing and either didn't care, didn't think it was wrong or were worried about the "reputation" of the church.

Those who knew and did nothing are guilty of condoning the abuse. They should be held to account.

But they won't be- because of money and power.

AngsanaFlower · 10/11/2024 12:49

Because he thinks he’s too important, untouchable and chosen by God.

People should refuse to go to church or engage with him till he resigns.

Werecat · 10/11/2024 13:00

Dude, he doesn’t even believe in the bible. He’s a churchian, not a Christian and he‘ll do anything to maintain his position at the top of that tree.

Simonjt · 10/11/2024 13:01

Because so many supporters of the church agree with him and his views, if they didn’t we would have a large number vocally protesting against him, but we don’t.

Neither do I. Wouldn’t throw innocents to the dogs though for the sake of my personal position.

victims just did not feature as even one of his concerns. He sent the guy abroad to carry on abusing.

HermioneWeasley · 10/11/2024 13:09

I don’t understand why enabling a paedophile isn’t a crime? Any why there isn’t more of an outcry about this?

A Christian who actually practices the religion wouldn’t either.

He is awful, but he’s centralised power in himself and he’s chosen few. He won’t go anywhere.

GrazingLamb · 10/11/2024 13:13

Will King Charles rescind the honour he bestowed on Welby last December?
He admitted him to the Royal Victorian Order - this is a personal honour in the gift of the monarch.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/11/2024 13:40

Would that be King Charles who sought marriage guidance from his chum Saville?
Doubt it.

Apart from wanting to protect the church (and his own power) at all costs, I really believe that men like Welby don't actually "get it". I'm not being a male apologist before anyone jumps on me.

Sorry, what? He doesn’t get that torturing and sodomising little children is wrong?

edwinbear · 10/11/2024 13:52

He’s an utterly vile man who believes he is untouchable. Hopefully the King, as head of the Church, will sack him.

I find this odd, especially as handling stolen goods is a crime, as is aiding a criminal, unless of course that criminal is a peadophile supported by one of the most power men in the UK.

Startingagainandagain · 10/11/2024 13:55

So he knew that this man was an abuser and helped cover it up and actively helped the perpetrator escape justice?

Surely it goes beyond him resigning, it should now also be a police matter and Welby and the others who covered this up should be investigated.

I hope this story gets a lot of publicity and that this spineless enabler resigns in disgrace.
