Why has Welby not resigned?

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/11/2024 11:47

Along with the at least 6 bishops and providence knows however many others within the organisation who were aware of this evil man’s conduct.

Listening to him tie himself in knots, trying to distance/excuse his inaction is despicable.

It's a British tradition for people in Welby's position not to resign. It's the way things are done.

He has resigned

NewGreenDuck · 12/11/2024 14:24

Bloody hell! Good riddance.

Nogaxeh · 12/11/2024 14:54

PotOfViolas · 12/11/2024 14:14

He has resigned

Yes. My timing is impeccable.

HRTQueen · 12/11/2024 14:57

Why isn't he facing charges himself

Why did it get to this point that he has resigned

Powerful men protecting other powerful men now where have I heard about this before 😡

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/11/2024 16:01

There's nothing wrong with your timing, @Nogaxeh, considering the appalling way Welby tried to hang on, and the points made in your linked piece were perfectly valid

The only tiny crumb of comfort is that he didn't try to blame his health, but overall how odd that someone who has views to express on just about every other social ill should be complicit in something like this

JennyForeigner · 12/11/2024 16:15

Well hello. Good. Lack of accountability isn't bloody good enough.

TameRockChick · 12/11/2024 19:33

Good riddance 🎉

It makes my skin crawl.

Brendan Cox and Rory Stewart have come out in support of him. Isn't it interesting how people show loyal support and solidarity to these people?

They didn't waste a second thinking about the victims of CSA and how crass such overt support for Welby would be?

Also why did Welby get resign?

Why was he not sacked?

ZewitewichOVcrismas · 12/11/2024 19:39

I'm afraid Rory Stewart has gone well down in my opinion recently.
Not that he or anyone else will care, however some things he's said recently.... Well... And now this.

JazzyJelly · 12/11/2024 19:57

He'd better hope he's wrong about Heaven and Hell

Quite...

Why has Welby not resigned?
AlertCat · 12/11/2024 21:25

His statement was so dishonest. He should have said straight up that he doesn’t actually care about the consequences of his actions in allowing the predator to carry on abusing for years. His motive to resign now is entirely extrinsic- he still doesn’t really think he did anything wrong, but he’s upset to have to leave his job.

How does the CofE think it’s going to turn around declining attendance when it’s seen as shamelessly covering up the worst sort of crime?

Viviennemary · 12/11/2024 21:40

ABirdsEyeView · 12/11/2024 14:08

I see he's resigned now. He should be prosecuted - covering up for a child abuser should he something you go to prison for!

I saw that too. What weasle words. How can he even call himself a follower of Christ. This is million times worse than the money lenders in the temple. He is a total disgrace.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/12/2024 23:25

Only just learned that The Children’s’’ Society has refused his charitable donation because it is not compatible with its ethos (been stuck in hospital).

Not sure how I feel about this, tb perfectly honest. On the face of it, logical. However, money is money and it could help its cause.

What do others feel/think? I’m really conflicted.

He should have been arrested for at the very best, facilitating paedophilia. I wonder what people who are fine with this get up to in their own spare time.

Baital · 22/12/2024 00:03

Have you read the Makin Report? It didn't find that he 'facilitated paedophilia'. The reason the Children's Society have turned down the donation is because they will get caught up in that sort of accusation from people who don't bother read the actual findings.

I don't blame them, there is no space for detail and nuance, so easier to steer clear altogether.

Which is a shame, as the money could be put to good use. The Children's Society used to be a CofE charity and still has close connections, so has traditionally been an uncontroversial choice.

Good for them.
Obviously he should now make a donation to them or a similar cause anonymously, as per biblical teaching.

scorpiogirly · 22/12/2024 00:31

He lied about it.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/12/2024 00:50

He doesn't think he's done anything wrong.

He doesn't really believe his mate did anything wrong.

He thinks it's years ago and nobody needs to bring it up now.

He thinks anybody bringing it up is deliberately attacking him.

He thinks that it's done to attack The Church.

He thinks it's the machinations of one woman to usurp his God given power.

He's still pissed off that Paula Vennels has been 'picked on' and thinks it's all a conspiracy to get him and his mates.

He thinks he's God's appointed representative on Earth and is The Church.

The money's better this way.

He thinks if he sits it out, everything will blow over and he'll be able to continue because nobody else will go for the job.

He doesn't care about the victims because they probably made it up, probably deserved it and in any case, he's far too busy to trouble himself with the whimpering of some people from the past and a mere woman.

He's got an awful lot of paperwork shredding to do.

He's no different from his mate that he protected and doesn't want that to be discovered.

Take your pick.

ThisCosyAquaHiker · 22/12/2024 00:56

I think its built in to organized religion. Unless you're willing to cover up evils, you'll never make it far up the ladder (or, if you do, you won't stay there).

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/12/2024 01:05

No, I haven’t been keeping up, personal circumstances.
thank you for the pointers, everyone, I’ll read up.

Cotterill needs to go now. There’s no room for people who have enabled abusers.

I am a congregation member at York Minster, always found SC to be a pleasant, affable man (unlike the pompous Welby, although I’ve never met him) but he needs to go pronto.

I can’t believe they have an almost identical situation now with the 2nd in charge. Oh wait, yes I can. An institution led by men, which only allowed women in 30 years ago, not prioritising children (especially girls) sadly is not a shock.

But if I were a Christian it would really put me off taking part in Church activities.

Ytcsghisn · 22/12/2024 10:25

Because he is like most leftie virtue signallers.

Lecture others about slavery reparations and immigration legislation. But at the same time protects and promotes paedos.
