Why has Welby not resigned?

Along with the at least 6 bishops and providence knows however many others within the organisation who were aware of this evil man’s conduct.

Listening to him tie himself in knots, trying to distance/excuse his inaction is despicable.

Because he enjoys living in a palace and having a place in the House of Lords, both of which he will lose. My guess anyway, as he seems to enjoy the public prestige of his role and likes intervening in politics.

Artistbythewater · 11/11/2024 13:53

Despicable and beginning to make me feel seriously angry at this point.

He took a very long sabbatical as well. I despise this behaviour and the revolting lack of decency or backbone.

Artistbythewater · 11/11/2024 13:56

I am also wondering why the police are not investigating HIM and everyone else that knew 30 years ago!! How many children have been abused since then? It’s outrageous.

Horses7 · 11/11/2024 14:06

Beggars belief he’s not gone! Is there a petition?

AgileGreenSeal · 11/11/2024 14:15

The head of Church would have to have more spine....

There’s only one Head of the church- the Lord Jesus Christ. All the rest, including the king are subordinate to Him.

HisNibs · 11/11/2024 14:10

There is on change.org. I put a link to it in the Petitions and Activism topic (Call for Justin Welby to resign. | Mumsnet)

Excellent idea, signed. I'm sure he won't listen but at least he'll know people are disgusted by him.

ladymalfoy45 · 11/11/2024 14:21

It's not just him. Others knew and also did nothing. I heard that as many as twenty senior church figures knew what was happening/ happened.

Horses7 · 11/11/2024 16:06

Signed the petition

Ilovemyshoes · 11/11/2024 16:22

I’ve signed it too

NewGreenDuck · 11/11/2024 16:27

So have I.

BlastedPimples · 12/11/2024 08:07

He's holding fast.

Listening to the interviews of some of Smythe's victims is heart breaking.

God knows how many more in Africa.

Welby will not go.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2024 08:20

Main headline in the times today - bishop of Newcastle urging his resignation.

If she thinks that'll 'draw a line' and save the CofEs credibility as a moral authority she's wrong.

Startingagainandagain · 12/11/2024 08:33

It's being discussed on LBC as well with the presenter suggesting he should resign.

Seems like he was hoping the story would just disappear but it is not going to be that easy...

Damnloginpopup · 12/11/2024 08:36

As always they think it'll blow over and they can carry on.

No you can't. Call Pickfords and fuck off.

Viviennemary · 12/11/2024 08:40

Because he loves being a VIP and hob nobbing with royalty. He's not going to give that up.

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/11/2024 08:43

I expect him to resign today. Personally I think he should have been sacked.

peanutbuttertoasty · 12/11/2024 08:48

HermioneWeasley · 10/11/2024 13:09

I don’t understand why enabling a paedophile isn’t a crime? Any why there isn’t more of an outcry about this?

Agree. Would like to see him arrested. How is this different to a pedo ring? It’s systematised child abuse. He has condoned and enabled it. Sicko.

Destroying the lives of little children. The devil incarnate. He has no moral authority to continue in his role. Can he not be sacked?

Boomer55 · 12/11/2024 08:59

Abuse has been rife, for very long periods of time, in all religions, And covered up by the leaders of those religions. Why isn’t the Pope or any other leaders being asked to resign? 🤷‍♀️

ABirdsEyeView · 12/11/2024 09:01

Because he's a selfish fucker who doesn't actually care all that much about child abuse, or he would have dealt with it when it first came to his attention.
Like a lot of people who position themselves as moral authorities and lecture the rest of the population on how we should behave, he is a massive hypocrite

Zingy123 · 12/11/2024 09:06

He was our Bishop. Totally self-centred he won't resign until he is made to.

Probably the closest we ever got to that was Benedict's departure in 2013 (citing "ill health", natch). He too was officially blamed for failing to deal with abuse cases, but since churches clearly tolerate these it may well have been the infighting chaos which finally did for him ... the victims may not matter to them, but failure to unite certainly does: https://www.reuters.com/world/obituary-former-pope-benedict-was-first-pontiff-resign-600-years-2022-12-31/

Like so many before him Welby will probably try to cling on by his fingernails and it'll probably damage the church still further, but why should they worry when fewer than 1 in 67 attend anyway and theirr own positions count for more?

ABirdsEyeView · 12/11/2024 14:08

I see he's resigned now. He should be prosecuted - covering up for a child abuser should he something you go to prison for!

AHFBridport · 12/11/2024 14:09

Resigned! Good!

Nogaxeh · 12/11/2024 14:10

It's a British tradition for people in Welby's position not to resign. It's the way things are done.
