traditional vs modern names

TheLoyalWriter · 10/11/2024 02:37

I am a fan of modern unisex names but DH likes more conventional names. We are expecting a baby girl. He wants to call her Charlotte Felicity as it sounds cute and means "free and happy" together. I love the meaning but seems a bit too traditional to me and too girly. His other options are Annette, Grace, and Jasmine, all of which are not my taste. Names I like would be like Riley or Lulu and I love the idea of a middle name like Hope and Peace but we have a one syllable surname so might not flow well.

Yabu. Post in baby names.

CroysantNotKwason · 10/11/2024 02:49

Your DH has much better taste in names than you.

RainbowSnake · 10/11/2024 02:50

You need to agree together. Can you agree on a name you both like if there’s a shortened version or nickname you both like? If he likes Charlotte do you like Charlie or Lottie or can you make Lulu from Charlotte?

I am thinking of making Charlotte Charlutte with the nickname Lulu? I also like Charlotte Hope but he is pretty set on Felicity.

If you like Lulu, do you like Fifi or Liss or Flicka as diminutives for Felicity?

Heidi2018 · 10/11/2024 03:06

Charlutte looks like a typo in my opinion! How would you pronounce it? And would your husband call her Charlotte and you call her Lulu? I'd keep looking until you find a name you and your husband are willing to agree and/or compromise on!

I like Fliss but since Felicity is a middle name, it won't be shortened unless we actually use Fliss.

It should be pronounced the normal way with Charlotte.

Hard no to Charlutte. That's a lifetime of explanations and embarrassment.

Heidi2018 · 10/11/2024 03:26

I know it seems like there is no way you will come to an agreement on a name, but you will find one that works for both of your name styles. When are you due?

orchid81 · 10/11/2024 03:33

Don't use Charlutte it really looks like you can't spell

I am due in February.

I think Charlotte Felicity is beautiful. And will give so many options for short forms.

I honestly hate the name Lulu. Suitable for a poodle perhaps. And of course reminds me of the singer and she just so totally annoys me.

SomeSuperhero · 10/11/2024 03:59

“Charlutte” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

What about Jimberly?

Daschund · 10/11/2024 04:27

Please let DH choose, especially if it's Charlotte; your spelling is awful.

Gonegirl7 · 10/11/2024 04:32

Charlutte is awful

Gman0206 · 10/11/2024 04:57

I'm an immigrant with a name no British person has ever heard of until they've met me (it's not super common in my home country either), and I have to spell my name out or repeat it more than once more often than you'd think. I'm absolutely not blaming any British person for needing me to spell it out or repeat it, it's often necessary for forms and such and also because I want to give them the opportunity to be able to say my name properly-ish.

It's not fun at all. I blush and get flustered each time I have to do it, be it on the phone or in person, and it has given me anxiety about meeting new people and being able to give off a confident first impression. Please don't burden your child with that sort of struggle, let her benefit from the privilege of being born British with a British background and local accent and traditional name, a lot of people in this country don't get that opportunity and it's a shame to see others waste it.

Cheshireicecreaminacone · 10/11/2024 05:00

please do not name her Charlutte. that's not even a name. it's awful.

rayofsunshine86 · 10/11/2024 05:01

Charlutte 🤣🤣

Now I understand why you posted in AIBU.

Cheshireicecreaminacone · 10/11/2024 05:02

I know a Lulu. her name is Louise. it's fairly classic. is that an option?

Gemstonebeach · 10/11/2024 05:04

How about Louisa or Lucinda or Eloisa with Lulu as the nickname? Felicity is a lovely name, have you considered that as her first name as it has the nn like Fliss or Flick which are a similar feel to Lulu. Please don’t call your child Charlutte!

I actually prefer Felicity as first name, I am not a fan of any of those names but also like Lauren.

BarberBealShaw · 10/11/2024 05:42

What's wrong with Flick? Nicknames don't even have to make sense. No reason why you can't interchangeably use Lulu and Flick either. It's not unusual to have several nicknames.

Other names: Rowan, Tala.

Please don't mangle the spelling.

The U isn't necessary for you to use the nickname Lulu.

Fwiw, I like Charlotte Hope.

How about a compromise? He chooses the first name and you choose the middle name?

CH is a nicer set of initials than CF.

You could save Felicity in case you have a second girl later.

Zanatdy · 10/11/2024 05:54

Your DH has far better taste in names than you. Do not go with a creative spelling, its embarrassing for your child and a lifetime of spelling it out then no doubt a comment about the odd spelling. Your baby will become a teen and a lady one day, so a name needs to he suitable for all stages of life. Charlotte is a lovely name but if you don’t like it, choose another name rather than that terrible spelling. You can call your daughter any nickname you like, my kids had many as young kids and none linked to their actual name.
