traditional vs modern names

I am a fan of modern unisex names but DH likes more conventional names. We are expecting a baby girl. He wants to call her Charlotte Felicity as it sounds cute and means "free and happy" together. I love the meaning but seems a bit too traditional to me and too girly. His other options are Annette, Grace, and Jasmine, all of which are not my taste. Names I like would be like Riley or Lulu and I love the idea of a middle name like Hope and Peace but we have a one syllable surname so might not flow well.

Charlotte Hope is a lovely name. Lottie for short.

Please don’t fuck about with the spellings. My first and surname are reasonably standard western names with a billion different spellings. It’s a bane of my life having to choose to correct people or let it slide until the inevitable awkward moment when they have to spell it correctly.

tuvamoodyson · 10/11/2024 07:51

I prefer the Shar’lutte spelling myself.

poetryandwine · 10/11/2024 08:17

I am not British and the spelling of my first name is not traditional here. As with PP it is the bane of my existence.

As with examples suggested by PP I see nothing wrong with the rhythm

Long Short Short

for a name, however. Felicity Hope Smith, Charlotte Grace Smith and similar are lovely. I think Felicity and Charlotte can both take an edgy middle name also, if you like.

I also like Lauren. Know that it is more American, however. That’s where I developed an ear for it.

Shinytaps · 10/11/2024 08:30

I’m not a fan of Charlotte either but are there any more traditional names you could agree on? What about Francesca (nn Frankie) or soemerhing like that.

the problem with the more unusual sounding names is that they tend to become quite popular as people have the same idea. So then there’s three Riley’s in their class. So make sure that’s not your main reason for giving them a name like that (not saying it is by the way!)

WhereistheDinrefrigerator · 10/11/2024 08:35

I'm going to blame your hormones for your awful taste in names, let your DH decide this one.

Cappuccinowithonesugarplease · 10/11/2024 08:38

Charlotte is nice but a bit boring and common. I love Florence for a girl, can be shortened to flossy.

Annabella92 · 10/11/2024 08:48

She'll end up on r/tradgedeigh

“Charlutte” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

What about Jimberly?

This made me burst out laughing. Just coming to say thank you for brightening my morning a little.

i’d read Charllute as slut. Sorry.

you can still have Lulu with the proper spelling.

I would never ask on MN for baby name advise! Only here have I seen Persephone and Lettice as serious suggestions. There's some weird belief on here that your child will experience years of bullying/disadvantage if you give your child an 'unusual' name or diminutive, despite the latter now being quite conventional (albeit more working class, shock horror!). Not sure where they stand on foreign names 🤔. Honestly other children don't care. I wouldn't let MN help you decide, if we went with their advice, children would all end up with the same names and the Persephone crowd would lose out on having something to feel superior about...

Onlycoffee · 10/11/2024 09:08

Just keep trying, there's be a name that suits both your tastes.

CortieTat · 10/11/2024 09:11
  1. Team husband

  2. Pearlie? Charlutte? These sound like perfect names for bathroom cleaning products.

ManhattanPopcorn · 10/11/2024 09:13

Your child will not thank you for giving her a name that you made up. She will either change it herself or have a life time of correcting people. From experience, an unusual name is a pita.

TheLoyalWriter · 10/11/2024 03:08

I like Fliss but since Felicity is a middle name, it won't be shortened unless we actually use Fliss.

My middle name is Louise and my parents often refer to me as “Lou” even though that’s not my first name or my exact middle name, so you could if you really wanted. People tend to find it sweet that they have a name only they use for me.

ManhattanPopcorn · 10/11/2024 09:18

As an experiment, try Charlutte as your own name. Use it for one off things like booking a restaurant or getting a blow dry. Introduce yourself as Charlutte. See how you get on.

Bluevelvetsofa · 10/11/2024 09:19

You’ve invented a couple of names by attempting to change existing ones. It’s not a good look.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 10/11/2024 09:20

Pearlie is awful. Charlutte is a typo. Lulu sounds like a poodle.

You like Charlie so surely it makes sense to use CharlOtte with Charlie as a nn

dontcrowdthemushrooms · 10/11/2024 09:23

I agree that Charlotte is a spectacularly boring name, but honestly most of your suggestions are pretty awful as well.
From the options you’ve mentioned I would go with Felicity Hope.

CroysantNotKwason · 10/11/2024 02:49

Your DH has much better taste in names than you.

👏👏

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 10/11/2024 09:27

@TheLoyalWriter Why not simply 'Pearl'?

I would sing 'Pearl's A Singer' to her an awful lot!

I love Pearlie sounds really cute! Don't get the hate towards it.

Expectingnum3 · 10/11/2024 09:32

Pearlie?! What a horrific name.

For kinda-classic-modern-twist names how about:

Piper
Cleo
Lara
Rowan

If neither of you can agree before baby arrives, let your husband take the lead on the name!

p.s: I agonised over my girl’s middle name and how the whole name flowed etc, etc, and I don’t think I’ve ever used her whole name or had a second thought about her middle name now she’s here. My friend asked if she could use my girl’s middle name for her little girl and it took me a second to remember that it was even my girl’s middle name!

Calliopespa · 10/11/2024 09:37

RosieCockle · 10/11/2024 03:21

Hard no to Charlutte. That's a lifetime of explanations and embarrassment.

Yes I’m sorry I really, really don’t like the habit of misspelling names. They just look like the parents couldn’t spell well. 😬

I have to say I think Charlotte Felicity is a beautiful name, and I know two Charlottes who go by Lulu anyway.

ETA “lutte” means the struggle in French so spelling it that way, you also bring in a sense of that to a name which otherwise has a lovely, happy meaning.
