traditional vs modern names

I am a fan of modern unisex names but DH likes more conventional names. We are expecting a baby girl. He wants to call her Charlotte Felicity as it sounds cute and means "free and happy" together. I love the meaning but seems a bit too traditional to me and too girly. His other options are Annette, Grace, and Jasmine, all of which are not my taste. Names I like would be like Riley or Lulu and I love the idea of a middle name like Hope and Peace but we have a one syllable surname so might not flow well.

I much prefer your husband's choices.
I hate the name Riley (sorry to those with kids named Riley). It's the name associated with naughty boys! Add "Hope" or "Peace???" to it and it's a even worse!

I'm old, to me it's Old Mother Riley, not good visuals!

Whats wrong with Pearlie?

Great, as long as Pearl's a singer!

Felicity Hope
Charlotte Hope with Charlie as a nickname

Please not Pearlie, she's going to be stuck with it for a lifetime and may not appreciate it.

And certainly avoid Pearlie if your surname is Gates!

Yes I don't like that idea anymore. I also like Pearlie.

Pearlie ? Is this a joke? I'm with your husband here. Please don't give her a weird name she might have to justify all her life. As you liked Felicity and Lauren go for one of those. Lulu, Fliss etc just makes me think of young girls wearing too much makeup and hanging out on the streets.

x2boys · 12/11/2024 09:05

Just call her pearl ,than you can have pearlie as a nickname but at least she gets a choice when she's older .

Pearlie penile papule ( don't image search 🤢)
That's what's wrong with "Pearlie"

unospaghetto · 15/11/2024 00:23

Lulu is great for a pet.
Pearlie sounds like a cleaning product or toothpaste.

I don’t even know what to suggest, my brain has got a bit mangled by Charlutte (yes I know it’s off the cards now).

Dorothea - can be Dot or Dotty or Thea if she prefers a less ditzy nickname.

Yes, avoid for this reason.

There is a boy called Rafe in my son’s school. Every time I hear it I think it sounds too much like perineal raphe. Gross.

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/11/2024 02:09

I’m with your DH.

your names would be great for pets

Yeah, the 8 year olds will be all over Pearlie for that precise reason.

Hmm
ChocolateTelephone · 15/11/2024 05:50

Charlutte really made me laugh 😂 I’m glad that’s fallen by the wayside.

Pearlie is just really naff imo. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it if you love it. Names are a matter of taste, no name appeals to everyone. Pearlie just feels cheap and infantile to me. Pearl is ok, and you could always call her Pearlie (just like you can use Lulu as a nickname for Charlotte even spelled the normal way).

Charlotte Hope Felicity is a lovely name, no objections to that.

Do kids stay 8 forever? Or is a name for life? Hmm

As someone who has a variance of a very popular name, dont do it!! Its been the bain of my life, always having to correct people and spell it out!

That must be a pane.

Are grown adults likely to mock and jeer a name, even the .00001% who might be familiar with the medical conditions you think are going to attract a raised eyebrow?

I think not.

TheMotherShipAhoy · 15/11/2024 19:34

OP, my DDs were born when many girls' names were hyphenated: Hannah-May, Ava-Rose, Holly-Rae and so on. Now in their mid teens, they've all dropped the 'part two'.

Their friends with 'cutesy' nicknames (typically when parents have approached naming from the ludicrous angle of "What should I name my DD to use xxxxx as a nickname?") have all switched to their more formal full names and cringe when someone calls them their 'toddler names'.

Just go for a regular, easy-to-spell name: you can indulge your fancy of enjoying calling your DD some kind of a nickname for a few years, and your daughter can reclaim her actual name as she attempts individuation in her teens.

Charlutte had me in tears, thanks for that. Inspired!

One of those names is my cousin's name. She still uses the whole thing and it hasn't stopped her from conquering the world. She was born before it was fashionable though.

TunnocksOrDeath · 15/11/2024 19:56

Google "freakonomics unusual baby names". Giving your child a made-up spelling of a 'normal' name will basically hit them hard career-wise.
Added to which, condemning your child to a lifetime of saying "No. Not 'Shar-loot', it's pronounced 'Charlotte' " just because you want to be the kooky cool Mum, is monumentally self absorbed of you.
I have had surnames that are (apparently) difficult to pronounce all my life, and it's a total pain. I almost missed an important medical appointment because they mis-pronounced my name so badly I didn't recognise it when called, and they thought I'd gone home and skipped to the next patient.

IBlameTheDog · 15/11/2024 20:18

Just give your poor baby a normal, tried and tested name and if that's genuinely too boring for you, give her a nickname. When you get bored with it (which you will) you can revert to her legal name.

Why on earth would you saddle the most important person in your whole universe with a crap name????

Peopleinmyphone · 15/11/2024 21:02

Coco could be short for Charlotte, similar concept to Lulu

If you really like Pearlie I'd put Pearl on the birth certificate but then just call her Pearlie everyday.

Calliopespa · 15/11/2024 21:09

Shallot?

Needmorelego · 15/11/2024 21:31

Nicknames don't have to be a variation of a persons actually name.
Look at Miley Cyrus. Her birth name was Destiny but she got nicknamed "Smiley" by family because she smiled a lot as a small child. Smiley evolved into Miley.
She has changed her name legally now but if she hadn't become famous she probably wouldn't have. She'd still be Destiny but Miley would be a family nickname.
@TheLoyalWriter Charlotte Felicity is a nice name. You can still call her Lulu if you want because that can just be a nickname.
Pearl is a nice name too but Pearlie sounds better as a nickname.
