traditional vs modern names

I am a fan of modern unisex names but DH likes more conventional names. We are expecting a baby girl. He wants to call her Charlotte Felicity as it sounds cute and means "free and happy" together. I love the meaning but seems a bit too traditional to me and too girly. His other options are Annette, Grace, and Jasmine, all of which are not my taste. Names I like would be like Riley or Lulu and I love the idea of a middle name like Hope and Peace but we have a one syllable surname so might not flow well.

I’m definitely a fan of more boring names. Parents often want their kids to stand out - kids usually want to fit in. There’s exceptions, but overwhelmingly kids hate “creative” names.

Name bias is real. You will be affecting your daughter’s employment opportunities with a name like Charlutte or Pearlie. She won’t just be spelling it all the time (people always get mine wrong, so I always spell it - even though it is main stream), but she’ll have people questioning her name, and likely consciously or unconsciously thinking less of her. She is likely to be assumed to be less intelligent and less capable.

Could you seriously see yourself introducing an adult for a serious occasion with these names?

Hopefully you’ll find a name combination you both like - but I do believe that out there names only work if both parents love them (and even then they don’t always work for the child!). If someone has to compromise, picking what will be easiest for the child is important.

Strangers are openly laughing at you for these names. That’s not kind - but it’s what your daughter will likely experience if you go that way. Maybe in future kids will be kinder (I think they are more accepting of differences than my generation already) - but that’s a lot to gamble on.

If your daughter is miss fashionable she’ll pull off any name, but if she’s not fit whatever reason this will be another battle.

I am thinking of making Charlotte Charlutte with the nickname Lulu? I also like Charlotte Hope but he is pretty set on Felicity.

Omg please don’t do that to your child! ‘Charlutte’ It literally sounds like Char lut😥 How woukd you expect it to be pronounced @TheLoyalWriter? I work in school and I feel so bad for some of the kids. Every time we get a cover teacher it’s always the same children having to explain their weird names. It might be cute and individual to you, but not your child. We have one called New York…no joke! We also have a Lusea not Lucy and a Cuba. I’m just waiting for the new starters next September…Bradford, Mexico and Birmingham 😂😂

I am not going to name her Charlutte, it was just a thought. Pearlie is okay though? DH seems okay with it we are now thinking maybe Pearlie Charlotte?

’Pearlie’ please noooooooo
She will be forever mocked, especially if she doesn’t have incredible teeth. Please don’t make your poor child go through a lifetime of embarrassment.

Moier · 10/11/2024 09:48

Prefer your husbands choice.
Felicity one of my favourite girls names.

StampOnTheGround · 10/11/2024 09:52

Definitely not something like Pearlie or Lulu, they're terrible.

I'd stick with Charlotte Felicity, it sounds lovely and your DH name suggestions in general are much nicer.

Whats wrong with Pearlie?

Pearl is a traditional nickname for Margaret.

Pearlie might be how you'd affectionately address a child call Pearl but you wouldn't give it as an official name!

TheLoyalWriter · 10/11/2024 06:25

The two names together is too long in my opinion.

You can spell Felicity, though.

It's a more 'normal' rhythm with the single syllable surname, too. Western music creates rhythmic expectations that the full name conforms to.

What's wrong with Flick? Nicknames don't even have to make sense. No reason why you can't interchangeably use Lulu and Flick either. It's not unusual to have several nicknames.

Other names: Rowan, Tala.

Edited

Rowan and Tala are dog’s names.

I much prefer traditional names than daft made up ones. I agree with other posters that Charlutte looks like a typo and sounds ridiculous. Why are you thinking about diminutives - choose a name that you like enough to use without shortening!

How does Pearlie Hope Charlotte sound?

Charlotte can be Charlie which is quite unisex ?

How does Pearlie Hope Charlotte sound?

I'd switch around and have Pearlie as a middle name.

Ok well name bias extends to foreign names as well. Whats your opinion on people anglifying their names in order to avoid a job rejection or whatever?

Pumpkincozynights · 10/11/2024 10:09

I think there are so many ‘unique’ names that when your dd is at school it will be common. Riley is common so won’t stand out.
I would advise not to mess about with spellings. Give her the correct spelling. Absolutely nobody enjoys repeating their name on a constant cycle, it’s draining. Also, remember hardly anyone reads emails properly so even if she puts her name on the bottom of emails, nobody is going to pay attention.
Don’t do that to your child.

How does Pearlie Hope Charlotte sound?

Honestly, awful.

Charlotte Pearl is lovely and I think would work well with a single syllable surname e g. Charlotte Pearl Jones.

LadyGabriella · 10/11/2024 10:11

Dear lord don’t go with Charlutte. Just no.

What about Pearl Charlotte? Pearl is quite different but a solid name.

Anon181 · 10/11/2024 10:14

I much prefer your husband's choices.
I hate the name Riley (sorry to those with kids named Riley). It's the name associated with naughty boys! Add "Hope" or "Peace???" to it and it's a even worse!

phoenixrosehere · 10/11/2024 10:15

Charlotte is so overused tbh.

Unless it’s a family name, I wonder if the couple couldn’t decide so they went with a safe name.

Probably already said but how about “Lottie”?

TheGriffle · 10/11/2024 10:15

Charlotte Pearlie Hope is a better order I think. Just remember you are naming for the adult she will become, not the cute toddler that she will be for a couple of years. Pearlie as a first name is just embarrassing as an adult.

MargaretThursday · 10/11/2024 10:16

Pearlie (and Lulu, Charlutte too) is awful.

You say it's "cute". That's fine when they're a baby, but would you like to have a cutsie name at about 7+?
And yes, kids do get teased about their names.

Charlotte Felicity is lovely, and there's lots of nicknames for Charlotte.
Please go with your dh's choice. If not, be prepared for her to change her name to one of her own choosing as soon as she can.
